Harry Scontras
DOVER - Harry P. Scontras, 83, husband of Panajota "Yota" (Lyterini) Scontras, of 13 Cherokee St., died Thursday, Oct. 21, 2004, at Dover Rehab and Living Center.
Born in Saco, Maine, April 23, 1921, he was the son of the late Peter and Anastasia (Catsoulis) Scontras.
He was a graduate of Thornton Academy, Saco, Class of 1941. Prior to his military career, Harry operated the family shoe repair business, Saco Shoe Hospital, with his brother, Nick. He honorably served a full military career in the U.S. Air Force for 20 years, retiring in 1965 as a technical sergeant from Loredo Air Force Base in Texas.
Mr. Scontras was employed by Davidson Rubber of Dover for four years as a computer operator, and worked a total of 16 years as a toll attendant for the State of New Hampshire.
He was a member of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church and the Association of Lacones of Saco and Biddeford, Maine.
Family members include his wife Panajota "Yota" Scontras of Dover whom he married June 6, 1958; a daughter, Evelyn "Ellen" K. Backowies and her husband, Tom of Dover; a brother, Andrew P. Scontras of Biddeford; a sister, Freda Zotos of Cohasset, Mass; three grandchildren, Brook T. Backowies of Lee, Kimberly K. Backowies of Lee, and Brad A. Backowies of Dover; and several cousins, nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers, Nicholas P. Scontras and Charles Scontras; and two sisters, Mary Scontras and Chrysoula Scontras.
Relatives and friends may call from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Tasker Funeral Home, 621 Central Ave. The Trisagion service will be conducated 7:00 p.m. Monday evening at the funeral home. The funeral will be held Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 93 Locust St. with the Rev. Constantine Newman, pastor officiating. Burial will be at the Annunciation Greek Cemetery, Dover Point.

Ronald Nolette
SOUTH BERWICK, Maine - Ronald R. Nolette, 73, formerly of 430 Main St. and Berwick Estates, South Berwick, died Oct. 22, 2004, at the Dover Rehabilitation and Living Center where he has resided for a short time.
He was born in Rollinsford, N.H., Aug. 1, 1931, the son of Arthur and Gracia (Roberge) Nolette. Ronald worked at various shoe shops throughout the area.
He is survived by his sisters, Agnes (Mrs. Malcolm) Nadeau of South Berwick and Germaine (Mrs. Conrad) Turmelle of Farmington, Conn.
He was predeceased by a sister, Lillian Dodier of Rollinsford.
By request of the family, services will be private. Burial will be in the family lot in New Town Cemetery, Rollinsford.

Hildred Jordan
BRENTWOOD - Hildred Mae Jordan, 91, widow of Merrill H. Jordan Sr., formerly of Portsmouth, died Saturday, Nov. 27, 2004, at the Rockingham County Nursing Home in Brentwood surrounded by her loving family.
She was born in Columbia, Maine, on March 17, 1913, the daughter of the late George William and Rose Mae (Willey) Scott. Mrs. Jordan was a graduate of Harrington High School, Harrington, Maine, Class of 1931. She was honored on the 70th anniversary of her graduation in 2001.
She attended Middle Street Baptist Church in Portsmouth where she was a member of the Adult Bible Class. She was also a member of the Ann Judson Fellowship, the Roger Williams Fellowship, the Golden Age Club. the Retired Senior Volunteer Program and the Rockingham Nutrition Program for 12 years.
Mrs. Jordan is survived by one daughter, Betty and her husband, Robert Noble of North Hampton; one daughter-in-law, Donna Jordan Cirone and her husband, Elliot of Milbridge, Maine; her son-in-law, Galen Kelley and his wife, Norma of West Willington, Conn.; 10 grandchildren, Alfred Jordan Jr. and his wife, Pam, Harry Jordan and his wife, B.J. Warren, of Milbridge, Maine, Donita and her husband, Gregory Whitehead of Gouldsboro, Maine, Patricia Hess and her husband, John of Amsterdam, N.Y., Shirley Mudzinski and her husband, Bruce, of Wallingford, Conn., Richard Noble and his wife, Kathleen of Palm City, Fla., David Noble and his wife, Michele of Wallingford, Michael Jordan and his wife, Debbie of Oviedo, Fla., Marc Jordan and his wife, Michelle Metcalf of Altamonte Springs, Fla., and Christina Collier of Deltona, Fla.; 25 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her sons, Alfred Jordan Sr. and Merrill Jordan Jr., and his wife, Sandra, and their son-in-law, Tim Collier; her daughter, Loretta Kelley; and her granddaughter, Viki Jean Smith.
Funeral services will be held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth on Monday at 11 a.m. Friends invited. Visiting hours will be held at the funeral home, Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, Gail Singer Memorial Building, 360 State Route 101, Suite 501, Bedford, NH 03110-5032. Interment will take place in the family lot in Forest Hill Cemetery in Harrington, Maine at a later date.
Elsie Koerner
ACTON, Maine - Elsie Elizabeth (Waycott) Koerner, 73, of Fox Ridge Road in Acton died Friday morning, Nov. 26, 2004, at home.
Born March 12, 1931, in Calais, Maine, she was a daughter of the late Manford and Pearl (Allen) Waycott. She resided the past eight years in Acton, having come from Thomaston, Conn. Elsie was a hard worker all her life. She worked at General Electric as an inspector for about 16 years and then owned her own business, "Donut Cellar and Bar," in Thomaston until her retirement and move to Maine. She was a member of the Pleasant Valley Grange in Milton Mills, N.H.
She is survived by her son, George W. Meyer Jr.; and grandson, Eric R. Meyer of Southington, Conn.; a brother, Kenneth Allen of Freeport, Maine; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by six brothers: Warren, Carl, Reginald, Ernest, Fred and Robert Meyer, and her sister, Eva C. Morrill.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2004, at Peaslee Funeral Home, 24 Central St., Farmington, N.H., at 11 a.m. The calling hour is an hour prior to the service from 10 to 11 a.m. Interment will follow at Milton Mills Cemetery, Milton Mills, N.H. Vance Stitham
KITTERY, Maine - Vance L. Stitham, 69, of 6 Happy Ave., Kittery, died on Saturday, Nov. 27, 2004, after a lengthy illness. He was the husband of Marilyn (Scott) Stitham for 50 years.
Born in Littleton, Maine, Vance was the second-eldest son of the late Ralph and Laura Stitham. He was employed by the former New England Homes for 14 years as a crane operator and drove propane tractor trailers throughout the Northeast. More recently, Vance retired from Saco Brick as a truck driver.
Vance was an avid baseball and football fan. He was a dedicated landscaper and had great pride in his beautiful lawns and flower gardens. Vance loved spending time with his grandchildren, family and friends.
In addition to his wife, Vance is survived by two daughters, Brenda, wife of Barry Higgins of Lancaster, Pa., and Karen Stitham of Portsmouth, N.H., six grandchildren, Carrie, Christie, Kellie, Courtney, Kelsey Higgins and Derek Hudson; and three great-grandchildren, Taylor, Kaila and Matthew Powell; a brother, Donald Stitham of Chelmsford, Mass.; and a twin sister, Vera Hutchinson of Monticello, Maine.
He was predeceased in death by his brother, Malcolm; and his sister, Marcella.
Vance was very much loved by his family and we will miss him.
A period of visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2004, at The J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery, Maine, where a funeral will follow at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in Orchard Grove Cemetery in Kittery. Ellen ‘Betty’ Stiles
CENTER STRAFFORD - Ellen "Betty" Stiles, 89, of Parker Mountain Road, died on Thanksgiving, Nov. 25, 2004, at the Sunbridge of Rochester after a long illness.
She was born in Antrim on Nov. 5, 1915, the daughter of Lewis and Frances (Weed) Brown, and moved to Center Strafford as a young child. Betty graduated from Austin-Cate Academy in 1934 and the University of New Hampshire in 1938. The following year she married her husband, Walton Stiles.
Betty was a very active member of the Third Baptist Church of Center Strafford. She served on many boards and committees and taught Sunday School. She also served as treasurer for nearly 40 years. She had also served several terms as a trustee of the American Baptist Churches of New Hampshire.
Betty was a founding member of the Strafford Women’s Club and was a member of the Grange for over 60 years. Always an avid reader, Betty became the librarian at the Hill Library, a position she held for 10 years.
She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Walton Stiles; her daughter and husband, Gail and Michael Barry; grandsons Shawn Barry and his wife, Caryn, Scott Barry and his wife, Tania; four great-granddaughters, Marissa, Alison, Paige and Rylee; her nephew, Calvin Stiles; and her sister-in-law, Iva Stiles, all of Center Strafford; and several cousins.
There are no calling hours. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, Dec. 5, 2004, at 2 p.m. at the Third Baptist Church of Center Strafford, N.H.. The Rev. Robert Fisher will officiate. There will be a reception to follow in the Christian Center of the church. Burial will be in Center Strafford Cemetery at the convenience of the family. Roland Johnson
MILTON - Roland C. Johnson, 76, of 267 North East Pond Road, died Thursday, Nov. 25, 2004, at Frisbie Memorial Hospital in Rochester.
Born in Alton on Jan. 18, 1928, he was the son of the late Carl and Florence (Elliott) Johnson. Mr. Johnson and his wife have lived in Milton the past 24 years after moving from Groveton.
He worked as a foreman at Star Lumber. He was an avid woodworker, hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed making wood projects for his family and was a loving husband, father and grandfather.
Members of his family include his wife of 33 years, Pauline (Allard) Johnson of Milton; 14 children, Nancy Robinson and her husband, Maurice, Patsy White and her husband, Allan Sr., Beverly Covill and her husband, Sheridan Sr., Priscilla Gumina and her husband, Gregory, Gail Lamb and her husband, Jeffrey, Wayne Johnson and his wife, Michele, Holly Tanguay and her husband, Luc, Melody Johnson, Diane Gregoire and her husband, Kevin, Penny Gagnon and her husband, Kevin, Lisa Eaton and her partner, Laura Judge, Steven Johnson and his wife, Lorraine, Valerie Lockard and her husband, Kenneth, and Danny Johnson and his wife, Cydney; two brothers, Ernest Johnson and his wife, Dot, of Groveton, and Richard Johnson and his wife, Anna, of Milton; 23 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Charles ‘Jake’ George
DOVER - Charles "Jake" George, 87, of 91 Grove St., died Friday, Nov. 26, 2004, at the Dover Rehabilitation & Living Center.
Born in Dover on Oct. 1, 1917, he was the son of Kaleel and Martha (Dowaliby) Tarsheshee (George). He was a graduate of Dover High School and was a lifetime resident.
Jake was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and served with the 31st Infantry Division in New Guinea and the Philippines as a heavy machine gunner. He received the Arrowhead award for opposing landings on several occasions.
Prior to his retirement, he was a welder at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and received a citation for his work in the welding department. He discovered certain welds could not hold under pressure even though they appeared to be good. For this he received a promotion and much greater responsibility in his work.
His fellow workers remembered this and spoke about it for many years thereafter. It was a major contribution to submarine safety. He was a member of St. George Maronite Church and the Dover Lodge of Elks.
Mr. George was predeceased by his wife, Murial M. (Downs) George, who died in 2003; and two brothers, Edward George and Ernie Bstandig.
Survivors include a son, Michael George, and his wife, Joanna, of Montgomery, N.Y.; two daughters, Barbara George and her husband, William Doll Sr., of Carlisle, Pa., and Pamela George and her husband, Curtis Jordan of Louisville, Ky.; six grandchildren, William Doll Jr., Shannon Tarrants, Michael Fryou, Matthew George, Jamie George Cosh and Nicholas George; two great-grandchildren, Cody Cosh and Sydney Tarrants; a sister, Margaret Menounos of Dover; and several nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to call Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Tasker Funeral Home, 621 Central Ave. The Rev. Joseph Ibrahim Khoueiry will have evening prayers at 7 p.m. on Monday evening at the funeral home. The Divine Liturgy will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Tuesday at St. George Church, Chapel Street, with the Rev. Joseph Ibrahim Khoueiry, pastor as celebrant. Burial will follow in St. Mary New Cemetery.
Angelina Jones
ROCHESTER - Angelina Blanche Jones, 65, of 207 North Main St., died Friday, Nov. 26, 2004, her birthday, at her home following a courageous battle with cancer.
She was born in Rochester on Nov. 26, 1939, the daughter of Lucien and Blanche (Bolduc) Laurion. She had been a resident of the area her entire lifetime. She was a member and communicant of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church in Rochester.
Angelina and her family had owned and operated Jones Day Care for over 40 years and she and her husband were foster parents for many area children. She was also a homemaker who enjoyed cooking. During her recent illness, she found joy in dining in many different restaurants with her family.
Surviving family members include her beloved husband of over 45 years, Clyde M. "Tiger" Jones of Rochester; her daughters, Lorrine Hartigan and Lena Jones, both of Rochester; a brother, Robert Laurion of Lakeland, Fla.; a grandson, Brandon Hartigan; a great-grandson, Kalib Hartigan; and a niece and several nephews and cousins.
Visitation at H.J. Grondin & Son Funeral Home, 177 North Main St., Rochester will be Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church. Burial will be at a later date in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Gonic. Marion Ring
EAST WAKEFIELD - Marion F. Ring, 91, of Ballards Ridge Road died Friday, Jan. 28, 2005, at Huggins Hospital in Wolfeboro after a period of failing health.
She was born on Dec. 19, 1913, in Newburyport, Mass., the daughter of the late Eugene and Florence (Canning) Spencer. Raised in Newburyport, she had lived in Wakefield, Mass., for many years before moving to East Wakefield for the last 30 years or more.
A retired shoe worker from the former L.B. Evans Shoe in Wakefield, Mass., she was a member of the Center Effingham Baptist Church in Effingham. She was also a member of the Lovell Lake Grange in Wakefield, the Tuftonboro Pomona Grange in Tuftonboro, and the Grange in Wakefield, Mass.
She enjoyed gardening, baking pies and bread, and feeding birds, and any animal that was friendly to her. She was also a collector of collectibles.
Survivors include one daughter, Eleanor F. Lawrence of Wakefield, Mass., two daughter-in-laws, Lois Ring and Debra Ring, both of East Wakefield; five grandchildren, Kevin Ring of East Wakefield, Patti Ring of Effingham, Zachary Ring of East Wakefield, Stephanie McPherson of Farmington, and Marcus Ring of East Wakefield; six great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson.
Mrs. Ring was predeceased by her husband, G. Elmer Ring, who died in 1982; two sons, Edward Ring, who died in 2000, and Daniel Ring in 1989; one brother, Joseph Cio; and one sister, Elizabeth Hutchins, who died in 2004.
Calling hours will be on Monday, Jan. 31, 2005, from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Peaslee Funeral Home, 2079 Wakefield Road, in Sanbornville (Wakefield, N.H.). Ralph Langley
EAST LEBANON, Maine - Ralph E. Langley, 75, of Sawtelle Road died unexpectedly on Saturday morning, Jan. 29, 2005, at Frisbie Memorial Hospital in Rochester, N.H..
Born Dec. 4, 1929, in Portsmouth, N.H., he was the son of the late Burleigh E. and Helen (Langley) Dennett. Raised in Newmarket, N.H., he moved to Madbury, N.H., and raised his children there. He has resided in East Lebanon since 1986.
Ralph was a Army veteran, serving in the Korean War. He was also a member of the Rising Star Masonic Lodge in Newmarket. He worked at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as a pipefitter for 30 years before retiring in 1986. He then worked for the Oyster River School District in Durham as a custodian for six years.
An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed whitetail deer, rabbit hunting and fishing. For the past 26 years, his home away from home was his beloved camps in Pittsburg, N.H., where he loved to hunt, ride snow machines and take his family and grandchildren.
Ralph had celebrated his first birthday party on Dec. 4, 2004, at the age of 75 with all his family and friends attending this joyous occasion.
Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Loretta E. (Benson) Langley of East Lebanon; his children, Jeffrey F. Langley of Farmington, N.H., Heide-Marie and her husband, Ronald, Bonner of Newfields, N.H., Wallace J. and his wife, Susan, Langley of Farmington, N.H., Ricky Langley and his fiancée, Sylvia Boulay of Middleton, N.H., Penny A. Langley of Newburyport, Mass.; and grandchildren Emery Myshrall III of East Lebanon, James Langley of Montana, Kevin Langley and Katy Langley, both of Farmington, and Crystal Langley and Ashley Langley, both of Middleton; a brother, Leon Dennett of Madbury; a sister, Bertice Jennison of Barrington, N.H.; and many nieces and nephews, brother- and sister-in-laws; many friends; and his beloved dog, Patty.

David Pheasant
ROCHESTER - David J.N. Pheasant, 78, of 21 Madison Ave., died Friday, Jan. 28, 2005, at his home after a sudden illness.

He was born Aug. 11, 1926, in Winthrop, Mass., the son of the late Aurelius and Helen (McCormick) Pheasant. He served in the U.S. Army Air Force from 1943 to 1946. He then received his bachelor of science degree from the University of New Hampshire and a master of arts degree in oratory from Staley College in Boston.
Dave worked as a sales engineer for many years for the Mobil Co. and James K. Horne Oil Co.. A resident of Rochester for 50 years, he was a 33 degree mason and member of the Consistory of Scottish Rite Bodies of the Valley of Nashua. He enjoyed stamp collecting and was a member of the Rochester Stamp Club. Dave was a member of the First Church of Christ Scientist of Dover and was an active attendant of the Christian Reading Room. He was also a member of the UNH Marine Docent Program and an active participant of their Chanty Singers Group. Sailing was a hobby of his also. Mr. Pheasant enjoyed sports and cheered on his children and grandchildren while they played.
Members of his family include: his wife of 53 years, Marilyn (Smith) Pheasant of Rochester; four children, Linda and her husband, Mike Morgan of Rochester, Gary and his wife, Anne Pheasant of Marietta, Ga., Heidi and her husband, Rich Leighton of Sutton and Sandra and her husband, Richard Gould of Lyman, Maine; nine grandchildren, Garrett and Melanie Morgan, Katie and Sara Pheasant, Carrie, Elizabeth, Zachary, Carley Leighton and David Gould.
He was predeceased by two brothers; and two sisters.

Malcolm Treadwell
ACTON, Maine - Malcolm Harding Treadwell, 83, lifelong resident of Acton, died Jan. 29, 2005, at Goodall Hospital in Sanford.
He was born Jan. 17, 1922, in Sanford, a son of Ralph Neal Dow and Kate Gertrude (Mace) Treadwell, and attended a one-room schoolhouse on Fox Ridge and graduated from Lebanon Academy in Lebanon. Malcolm served in the Army as a big equipment mechanic during World War II in the Pacific islands. Following active duty, Mr. Treadwell returned home to Acton and married Olive Marcia Mee on Sept. 6, 1946. Since 1950, they made their home together on the South Acton Road.
Mr. Treadwell worked many years at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as a welder and retired in 1984. From an early age, Malcolm managed woodlots efficiently and was a member of the Sons of the Wilted Wallet and was a member of the Mousam Lake Grange, 467 for over 60 years. He enjoyed driving his tractor and teaching the kids how to drive out by the rabbit pens.
He would say, "If you make it around the pen without hitting it, you were ready to drive on the roads." He could stack a woodpile without any holes and build a solid rock wall.
Survivors include: his wife of 58 years, Olive M. Treadwell of Acton; two sons, Mark Treadwell and wife, Patricia, of Toledo, Ohio, and Roy Treadwell and his wife, Paulette, of Acton; four daughters, Rhoby Treadwell of Lewiston, Agnes Beane of Westbrook, Malinda Hubbard and her husband, Donald, of Newfield and Hannah Phillips and her husband, Dwayne, of Acton; 15 grandchildren, Steven, Catherine, Matthew, Luke, Jacob, Rebecca, Nathan, Ryan, Sarah, Jeffrey, Angela, Bradley, Malcolm, Jedidiah and Abraham; two great-grandchildren, Olivia and Jamie; one brother, Merle Treadwell of East Rochester, N.H.; and one sister, Shirley Chick of Rochester, N.H.; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents; two brothers, Burton Charles Treadwell, who died during World War II, and Ralph Ezekiel Treadwell; and his sister, Arlene (Treadwell) Leonard.
A memorial gathering will be held Monday, Jan. 31, 2005, at 6:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. at the Acton Town Hall.
Marguerite Hatfield
SAFETY HARBOR, Fla. - Marguerite L. Hatfield, 92, formerly of Somersworth, N.H., and a resident of Safety Harbor, died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2005, at her home under the care of hospice.
She was born in Caribou, Maine, worked as bookkeeper for the family’s construction business and was a homemaker. She had lived in Florida the past four years after moving from Somersworth. Mrs. Hatfield was a Methodist.
Her surviving family members include: her husband of 75 years, Maurice R. Hatfield of Safety Harbor, Fla.; her son, Richard Hatfield of Palm Beach, Fla.; her grandson, Richard Hatfield II of Atlanta, Ga.; two great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Hazel Tuttle of Sanford, Maine, Agnes McGoey of Vero Beach, Fla., and Claudine Reid of Somersworth.
The Sylvan Abbey Memorial Park & Funeral Home in Clearwater, Fla., is in charge of arrangements.
