WAIN, JOHN EDWARD SHIELDS, 72, died peacefully at home in Newton on Wednesday following a heroic battle with leukemia. Born on July 13, 1932, in Ford City, Pa., Mr. Wain graduated from Ford City High School and Clarion University in Clarion, Pa. He taught and coached basketball at Keystone High School, Knox, Pa., from 1961 to 1963. The "Duke" taught social studies at Newton High School from 1964 until his retirement in 1994. During his tenure at Newton, John was the varsity basketball coach and an assistant coach in football, wrestling, track and softball. Additionally, he coached elementary basketball in Newton and Andover. Most recently, John was a part-time employee at Weis Markets. John was a 50-year member of the Kittanning East Brady Lodge No. 244, F & A.M.; a longtime member of the NRA, a lifetime member of the Allamuchy Rod and Gun Club. John was also a Korean War era veteran, serving in the United States Army from 1952-1954. The son of the late Fred and Margaret Howells Wain, John was also predeceased by his brothers, Fred and Dick, and his sisters, Hannah and Eleanor. He is survived by his beloved family: his wife of 48 years, Patricia; son Matthew and his wife, Elizabeth (O'Conner), of Hummelstown, Pa; daughter, Mary Frances, and her husband, Sean, of Washington, D.C.; daughter Katie, and her husband, Anthony, of Frankford; and his grandchildren, Brianne, Victoria, Andrew, Alexandra, Dominic, Bryan, Kiersten, Matthew and Samuel, expected in September.
