Agnes Lloyd
HARDYSTON - Agnes Lloyd, 79, died Sunday, June 17, 2007, at her home with her children and grandchildren by her side. She was born on Jan. 23, 1928 in a small town in Yugoslavia and was the first born of the late Stjepan Mrazovac and the late Barbara Jambresak.
Agnes lived in Hardyston for four years. She resided in Warwick, N.Y., from 2001 to 2003 and before that resided in Pinehurst, N.C. She was predeceased by her husband, James Robert Lloyd, in 1991.
Her birth name was Agata, but the tenor of Ellis Island in 1931 "Americanized" her first name to Agnes.
After grandchildren arrived, she was lovingly referred to as Yaya, but that name conjures up images of babushkas and sandals ... she was anything but.
She graduated first in her class of more than 500 in Alliquippa, Pa., after having overcome the obstacle of learning the English language. While raising three sons and a daughter, she worked as a graphic artist but her love of literature drove her back to school, and at the age of 45, she earned her master's degree in English.
She loved teaching and used this passion to teach English in the River Dell High School from 1971 to 1979. She also earned the distinction of Master's points in contract bridge and could be found spending her idle moments playing a game of Scrabble or a game of solitaire while watching CSPAN. She loved birds and the many books and records on that subject offered her joy in her pursuit to identify a passing specimen. In her youth, she was an avid swimmer. Later in life she enjoyed the social and competitive nature of golf.
She adored her mother. Her great respect for her mother was clear in the stories that she would tell her family as well as the look in her eyes when she saw her mother on the family summer trips to Alliquippa. Agnes' generosity was unsurpassed in her giving of guidance, love and financial support.
She is survived by her sister Katherine Gooch of Broken Arrow, Okla., three sons James Robert Lloyd of Katonah, N.Y., John Vincent Lloyd of Califon, Carl Lloyd of Warwick, N.Y., and a daughter Barbara Sundin, of Lewisburg, Pa., 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A celebration of Agnes' life will be held Saturday, June 23 at 4 p.m. at her home. Her family would like to recognize the extraordinary work, compassion and level of care that the Newton chapter of the Karen Ann Quinlan Hospice organization gave to Agnes and her family. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the hospice at 99 Sparta Ave., Newton, NJ 07860.
