Alexander Landis
BRANCHVILLE - Alexander Landis, 81, died Thursday, Oct. 27, 2005, at home.
He was born on Jan. 25, 1924 in New Brunswick.
Mr. Landis married his wife, the former Anne Bronkhorst, on Nov. 30, 1946, in Newark.
Loving husband of 59 years, supportive father and doting grandfather. He was a member of "Greatest Generation."
Wanting to serve in the armed forces following the attack on Pearl Harbor, and knowing he would almost certainly fail the eye exam, Mr. Landis memorized the standard eye chart and passed the test. He joined the U.S. Army 33rd Infantry, serving in the Pacific with the famed Alamo Scouts, a unit whose heroic exploits inspired the recent movie, "The Great Raid."
With his older brother, Morris, he was a principal in the firm Landis and Landis Certified Public Accountants. From 1962 to 1970, along with his wife, he owned and managed Camp Paradox, a summer camp for boys in the Adirondacks, famous for having been attended by composer Richard Rodgers, lyricist Lorenz Hart, authors Nathanael West, Gerald Green and screenwriter David Milch of "Hill Street Blues" and "NYPD Blue".
For 25 years prior to his retirement, Mr. Landis organized group travel excursions for young musicians and choral groups to participate in international music festivals and competitions.
He was a member of the American Legion in Sandyston, Woodstream Rod & Gun Club in Highland Park, Boy Scouts of America in New Brunswick and Kiwanis International in New Brunswick and served as president of the Kittatinny Lake Association in Branchville.
Generous to a fault, he raised funds for organizations such as the United Fund and the Kidney Foundation, and donated cardiac defibrillators for local emergency use.
To paraphrase Will Rogers, Mr. Landis never met a man or woman he didn't like.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Ann; one son, Eric, and daughter-in-law, Jolene, of Boston, Mass.; one daughter, Robin Landis Carlier, and son-in-law, Bob, of Redwood Shores, Calif.; one grandson, Spencer Antoine-Michael Carlier; one granddaughter, Sydney Anneke-Manor Carlier; his twin brother, Sam, and sister-in-law, Connie, of Monroe Township; sister-in-law, Rave Landis, of North Brunswick and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services were held on Sunday, Oct. 30, at the Elmwood Cemetery, Commercial Avenue, New Brunswick. Arrangements were by the Crabiel Parkwest Funeral Chapel, 239 Livingston Ave., New Brunswick.
