Margaret Elvins Heggan, 93, died Tuesday, January 18, 2005. Peg embodied everything that is good and everything that is kind in life.
Born June 16, 1912 in Hammonton, she was the daughter of Thomas and Lilla Ruby Elvins. After high school, she married Oscar K. Heggan (“Jack”). They eventually bought a rundown old farm and cold storage in Washington Township. Together, she and Jack turned the farm into a successful orchard business. Our mother’s real success was in her personal life. Every child should have a mother like our mother Peg. She taught her children that people are put on earth to do more than take up space. Her whole life was one of helping and giving. For a while, Mother believed that she could be of the greatest service by becoming part of the local political arena. She served on the Township Committee and later became mayor of Washington Township. Her real love, outside of her family and friends, was her dream of a public library in Washington Township, a goal she helped attain through hours of dedicated work. In 1984 she was named Washington Township’s Person of the Year and on January 21, 1985, the library was renamed the Margaret E. Heggan Free Public Library.
Surviving her are: son, Jon of Wilmington, Del.; daughters, Elizabeth Whittington of South Seaville, Colleen Ferber of Avondale, Pa.; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.
Services for friends and relatives will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Margaret E. Heggan Free Public Library, 208 East Holly Avenue, Hurfville, NJ 08080.
In Peg’s honor if you are a parent, be the best parent you can be. Read to a child and most of all, find your joy in helping others.
