George A. Mortellite
In loving memory of George A. Mortellite. Born September 21, 1939, deceased January 27, 2004.
Although we grieve over the passing of our loved one, it has also given us an opportunity to reflect on the pleasurable and significant events of his life.
George was a lifelong resident of Hammonton. He graduated from Hammonton Public High School in 1958. During his four years in high school he very actively participated in basketball, baseball and the football programs. Upon completion of high school he joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1959 and was honorably discharged in 1963. In 1962 he married his high school sweetheart, Ronnie Petkevis. They recently celebrated their 41st anniversary.
From 1963 until 1991, George and his brother Anthony became co-owners of a blueberry farm called Buffalo Farms which had been named in honor of their father. In 1991 the family business known as Bellevue Properties was founded. George was co-owner of this business which is responsible for the construction and revitalization of several buildings in Hammonton that provide employment for many local residents. Bellevue Properties is also responsible for similar activities throughout Atlantic County. Along with his business responsibilities, George felt a need to participate in this community. George was a former member of Sons of Italy, Kiwanis, member of the N.J. Mayors Association, representative to the Atlantic County Board of Freeholders, and many other local organizations. During the 1980s, he was elected as member of Hammonton Town Council for six years and was elected as Mayor for four years. During his tenure as Mayor he signed a proclamation on March 28, 1987, proclaiming the town of Hammonton as the Blueberry Capital of the World. Another significant event that occurred while he was Mayor was the visit by President Ronald Reagan to Hammonton on September 19, 1984. When George told President Reagan that a street in Hammonton would be named Ronald Reagan Drive, the President became visibly moved and stated “that’s never happened to me before.”
George had a passion for antique cars, which nearly matched his love for his family. His favorite antique automobile was a 1958 Bonneville Pontiac, which was a replica of a vehicle he owned as a youngster. He entered his Pontiac in many antique car competitions and he proudly displayed the numerous trophies that he won. A standard joke was about “Ronnie and Bonnie” (his wife and his car) and one which held the top place in his heart. George was very personable as evidenced by the many friends he had in Hammonton, Ocean City, and Delray Beach, Fla. His presence will be noticeably missed by his family and friends.
Surviving him are: wife, Veronica (Ronnie); sons, George Jr. and his wife Karen, Gary and his wife Tammy; sister, Angelina DiMeglio and her husband Anthony; brother, Anthony; sister-in-law, Anna; brother-in-law, John (Uncle John) Santora; grandchildren, Nicole, Tiffany, Giana, Lorin, Kara, Gary Jr.
