FREEDLEY, ROBERT P. “Rusty”
On Jan. 24, 2007, age 79, a life long resident of Haddonfield, and the beloved husband of Mary Jane (nee Horner). He is the father of Susan F. Jackman, of Orlando, FL, Denise F. Elliott (James W.), of Millville, NJ, and Pamela F. Georgel (Christopher), of Stratford. Also survived by 5 grandchildren, Katherine E. and Alexander Jackman, Brian J. Elliott, and Nicholas and Daniel Georgel, 1 great grandson, Leonid Zurbarev and a sister, Shirley Green, of Madison, CT. Mr. Freedley served on Haddonfield’s Shade Tree Commission for over 40 years. Additionally, he was a long time member of the Haddonfield’s Y’s Men’s Club and the Sixty-Five Club. Mr. Freedley’s family will receive friends, Monday morning after 10AM at Kain-Murphy Funeral Services, 15 West End Ave., Haddonfield. Services will follow at 11AM. Interment Haddonfield Baptist Cemetery. NORRIS, DAVID P.
On Jan. 23, 2007, age 83, a lifelong resident of Haddonfield and husband of the late Jessie E. (nee Allen). Mr. Norris was a Produce Manager at A & P for more than 40 years and a longtime member of the United Food and Commercial Workers. He is survived by numerous cousins including Thomas Barratt of Doylestown, PA, Donald Barratt of Marlton, NJ, Annamae McPherson and James (Zeelia) Maccariella, Sr. of Marlton. Mr. Norris’ family will receive friends on Saturday, after 9 AM, at Kain-Murphy Funeral Services, 15 West End Ave., Haddonfield, NJ; where his service will follow at 10 AM. Interment, Fernwood Cem., Fernwood, PA. Memorial donations may be made in Mr. Norris’ name to the charity of one’s choice.
Ewing, Ruth A.
President, Philadelphia Home & School Council
(nee Anderson) Age 94, of Cherry Hill, a longtime public volunteer and environmental supporter died of natural causes on Jan. 23, 2007, at Cadbury of Cherry Hill. She was a resident there since 1993.
In 1959 she was elected president of the Philadelphia Home and School Council and served in that capacity until 1962. In 1965 she and her family moved to Indianapolis where she became active in politics. From 1968 to 1973 she served as appointment secretary for then Indianapolis Mayor Richard G. Lugar.
A native of Philadelphia, she grew up in the Kensington section of the city, graduated from Kensington High School and attended Temple University. Her first effort at community service came when she and a group of friends gathered at Camp Whelan in Harvey Cedars, NJ in 1938 and formed a group called “The 68 Club,” which was associated with the Y.W.C.A.
The name derived from the hope that this group of women would remain friends and active in community affairs for 30 years. Only a few members remain but for more than 70 years they contributed their time and money to worthwhile causes. They raised funds to send less fortunate girls to “Y” camps, aided a family in 1958 that had escaped persecution in East Germany, financed a young Indian woman’s education through five years of medical school, and adopted two children in Hong Kong.
An active church member and United Methodist Women’s (UMW) supporter, she belonged to Alpha Baptist Church and Trinity Methodist Church in Philadelphia, Meridian Street Methodist Church in Indianapolis and Haddonfield United Methodist Church in NJ.
She and her husband summered in Ocean City, NJ where they were active in The Jersey Cape Victorian Society, the Garden Club and the Flower Show. Her husband, Dr. Joseph Ewing, preceded her in death in 1993. He directed dental services at the Veteran’s Administration Hospital in Indianapolis for many years and was a professor in the Temple University School of Dentistry from 1939-1965.
She was a strong supporter of environmental causes including the Sierra Club, the New Jersey Audubon Society, Philabundance, The Robin’s Nest, and Aid for Friends. She is survived by her daughter Dr. Cheryl Laney, of Haddonfield, NJ, her son, Thomas, and daughter-in-law Deborah of Yardley, PA and grandchildren, Amanda Ewing Fleissner (Joseph), Andrew and Carrie Biemer and former son-in-law, Michael Biemer. The family will receive friends on Saturday, Jan. 27th, 10:30-11:30 AM in Felten Parlor at the Haddonfield United Methodist Church; where her memorial service will follow in the Sanctuary at 11:30 AM. Ruth A. Ewing (nee Anderson), a resident of Cadbury in Cherry Hill, died on January 23, 2007, aged 94. She was the mother of Cheryl Laney of Haddonfield and the wife of the late Joseph.

Wallace, Albert Johnston, Jr.
Born on Feb. 4, 1912 in Camden, NJ and a long-time resident of Haddonfield, NJ, died on Jan. 8, 2007, in Marblehead, MA, where he has lived for the past 16 years with his daughter, Deborah Essig. Albert was married to the late Susan (Tatum) Wallace and is survived by his daughters, Edith and her husband, Peter Wallis, Deborah and her husband, Rob Essig, his son, Eugene, and his wife, Dolly, along with grandchildren, Whitney and her husband, David Guida, Ashley and Jason Wallace, and Matthew and Susan Essig. He is also survived by his nieces, Lauren Yates and Janet Boakes, and his nephew, Edward Boakes. He was the brother of the late Myrtle Boakes. A 1934 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School, Mr. Wallace spent his career as a business executive with E.J. Lavino and Co. of Philadelphia. An avid sailor, he spent summers in Ocean City, NJ and he traveled around the world with his wife. He was an accomplished photographer and with his wife, Susan, created personal Christmas cards long before they became popular. A member of the Religious Society of Friends, he was active in the Friends Meetings in Haddonfield and Seaville, NJ as well as in Yardley, PA. A meeting for worship will be held on Saturday, Jan. 13, 2007, at 10:30 AM at the Haddonfield Friends Meeting, Friends Ave., Haddonfield. In lieu of flowers, the family requests, donations be made to the American Friends Service Committee, 1501 Cherry St., Philadelphia, PA 19102.
MINER, ELEANOR M.
(nee Jackson) On Dec. 31, 2006, age 86, a resident of Haddonfield for more than 40 years and devoted wife of the late William A. Loving mother of William R. (Patricia) of Windsor, CO, beloved grandmother of Jennifer Miner of Denver, CO, Andrea Sears (Craig) of Raleigh, NC and great grandmother of Katherine and Joshua Sears. Mrs. Miner worked for Dr. Leland Rose for 23 years. She was a member of the Quilter’s Club at the Haddonfield Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Miner was a life long member and Sunday school teacher of the Community of Christ church. Her family will receive friends on Friday, after 10 AM, at Community of Christ, 60 Progress Ave., Woodbury, NJ 08096. Her Memorial Service will follow at 10:30 AM. Interment, private.
