Friend, Paul H. Jr.
Age 63, of Haddonfield on March 14, 2008 after a courageous battle with cancer. Survived by Margaret A. “Peggy” (nee Jackson), daughter Tahtianna “Tonya” Friend, mother in law Mrs. Florence Jackson, loving nephew Perry Pileggi of Haddonfield, sister Karen Friend of Cinnaminson, and loyal companions Aness, Mr. Bean and Lola , and 2 sisters, 1 brother. Paul was a 1963 graduate of Haddonfield Memorial High School, fourth generation Haddonfield resident. As a Vietnam Veteran he served as a dog handler in the Air Force Military Police. Paul was a internationally renowned stained glass artist and an accredited studio member of the Stained Glass Association of America, his legacy lives on in hundreds of churches and synagogues throughout the country including Congregation M’kor Shalom in Cherry Hill, Grace Church of Haddonfield, New Mexico Military Institute and within a multitude of residential homes throughout the country. Paul was locally known for his stained glass walking tours and lectures as well as his apprenticeship program at the Markeim Art Center in Haddonfield. Private services arranged. A gathering for family and friends will be held on Saturday, March 22nd from 6 to 8 pm at the Friend residence.
Mathers, Gertrude L.
(nee Pennypacker) On March 13, 2008, age 89, of Riverview Estates, Riverton, NJ, formerly a longtime Haddonfield resident, wife of the late Edward R. and mother of the late Bonnie Hender. Survived by 3 sons, David R. (Marlene) of Richmond, VA, Stephen E. (Nancy) of Exton, PA, and Peter (Bonnie) of Chevy Chase, MD, 1 son-in-law, Joseph Hender of Haddonfield, 10 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Mrs. Mathers’ was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Haddonfield for over 60 years. She sang in the Choir for more than 40 years and taught Sunday School. Additionally, she ran the Haddonfield Baptist Cemetery for 10 years. Mrs. Mathers’ family will receive friends on Tuesday, after 10 AM, in the parlor of the First Baptist Church of Haddonfield, 124 E. Kings Hwy., Haddonfield, NJ 08033. Her Service will follow at 11 AM in the Sanctuary. Interment, Haddonfield Baptist Cem. Memorial donations may be made in Mrs. Mathers’ name to the Church at the above address.
Zwarg, Walter J.
Age 92, of Medford Leas, NJ, formerly of Haddonfield, NJ, passed away on Sunday, March 9. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Nancy, two sons Stephen (Mystic, CT), Peter (Littleton, CO), and a daughter Christina (Philadelphia, PA), four grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
Walter was born and educated in Philadelphia. He graduated in 1937 with highest honors from the University of Pennsylvania, where he was captain of the champion crew team.
He served in the US Army Intelligence service in Germany from 1943-1946.
Walter worked for Armotek Industries, a leading gravure and engraving firm, for 35 years in a variety of executive positions, retiring in 1981 as Senior Vice President.
He was a life long sailor, beginning with small boats on Barnegat Bay. He owned a series of cruising boats named Winsome. Memberships included the Island Heights Yacht Club, The Corinthians sailing association, and the Philadelphia Corinthian Yacht Club.
A memorial service will be held at Medford Leas, on Sunday, April 6th at 3pm. RUSHTON, JAYNE LESLIE
Age 52, of Sewell, NJ, passed away peacefully at her family’s home in Haddonfield, N.J. on March 12, 2008. She will be missed by her beloved husband, George “Jerry” Surowicz, and her daughter Frances Eileen, both of Sewell, N.J. She is also survived by her parents Dr. Harold W. and Frances E. Rushton of Haddonfield, N.J., her siblings, David P. (Debra) of Front Royal, VA., Mark D. (Alla) of Boulder, CO., Christopher J. (Andreza) of Riverdale, N.Y., Daniel L. (Sharon) of Rhinebeck, N.Y., Leslie A. (Barry) Cerf of Chestnut Hill, PA., and Nan M. Rushton of Audubon, N.J. and 4 nieces, 3 nephews and dear family and friends. Jayne graduated from Haddonfield Memorial HS in 1974 and Hampshire College in 1978. She then worked in the health care field. Family and friends are invited to Jayne’s Memorial Mass, Wednesday, 9:30 AM, at Christ the King R.C. Church, 200 Windsor Ave., Haddonfield, NJ. Her family will receive friends following the service. On March 8, 2008, age 100, of Cherry Hill. Survived by 2 nieces, Anne Gehring and Beth Pfleger, both of Cherry Hill, 1 nephew, Robert Oberholzer of Haddonfield and many grandnieces and nephews. Miss Oberholzer’s family will receive friends on Friday after 9:30 AM, at Christ the King R.C. Church, 200 Windsor Ave., Haddonfield; where her Funeral Mass will follow at 10 AM. Interment, Calvary Cem., Cherry Hill, NJ.
Flanagan, Patrick
On March 7, 2008, age 54, of Voorhees and father of Kelly Tarditi (Daniel), of Haddonfield, Christina Flanagan, of Voorhees and Ryan Flanagan, of Westmont. Also survived by 3 grandchildren, Mia, Jack and Matthew, 4 brothers, James Telford, of Hartley, DE, Michael Flanagan, of Lansing, MI, Thomas Flanagan, of Turnersville and Peter Flanagan, of Tabernacle, 3 sisters, Kathleen Fleming, of Woodbury, Maureen Marcus, of Marlton and Tara Rambo, of Turnersville and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Flanagan was a long time employee of Rohm & Haas and an avid world traveler. His family will receive friends, Tuesday morning from 9-10:45AM in the Sanctuary of the First Presbyterian Church, 20 E. Kings Hwy., Haddonfield. Services will follow at 11AM. SLATER, JACK
On March 7, 2008, age 81, of Cherry Hill, formerly of Willingboro, NJ and Philadelphia, PA. Jack was a graduate of City College of New York and received his master’s degree in Library Science from the University of Michigan. He served as associate director of libraries at Drexel University until his retirement in 1986. Jack enjoyed traveling, gardening and spending time with his grandchildren. Husband of Elizabeth (nee Edenhofer). Also survived by 2 sons, David M. (Kristin) of Middleboro, MA and Daniel P. (Diane) of Mt. Laurel and 2 granddaughters, Jessica and Katherine Slater.
