YURKOW, Maryellen A. (new)
Maryellen A. (Mimi) Yurkow (nee Adams), a lifelong resident of Haddonfield, died on November 25, 2006, after a five-year battle with ovarian cancer, at age 50.
Survivors: husband, Philip J.; sons, John, Gregory, and Douglas; brothers, William of New Market MD and Stephen of Haddonfield.
Mrs. Yurkow devoted herself to her children and her community. She taught CCD at Christ the King Parish, served as room mother and PTA president at Central School, worked the snack bar at countless soccer and Little League games, and attended every school function, field trip and youth sporting event she could.
“The thing that she was most passionate about was her three children,” said her husband of 25 years, Philip Yurkow. “She was the typical soccer mom and baseball mom.”
Mrs. Yurkow was born at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Camden, graduated from Haddonfield Memorial High School, the University of Pennsylvania, and Rutgers University Law School. She had always worked part-time as an attorney, hoping to work full-time as her children grew older. That was never possible because of her cancer, her husband said.
After she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, she founded the South Jersey chapter of the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition.
“She did everything she could to make other women aware of what a terrible disease this was and whatever they could do to prevent being affected by it themselves,” her husband said.

The following was reported on Saturday, November 25, by two of Mimi Yurkow's friends, Anne Gutos and Dara Marcozzi:
It is with a very heavy heart that we bring you this news.
Today we lost a very dear friend. Our beloved Mimi has lost her courageous battle with Ovarian Cancer.
"Mimi was the most beautiful, generous, vibrant soul one could ever meet. Mimi was an inspiration to all of us in so many different ways and she will CONTINUE to be an inspiration to all of us as we go forth one by one, side by side, together as we continue to battle for the women who are presently fighting Ovarian Cancer and for those who have not yet been diagnosed. With Mimi in our hearts we will work harder and stronger than ever. I know she will always be with us in every one of our efforts!
We vow to continue to educate, raise awareness and advocate funding for research in early detection and therapeutics.
We all met by divine intervention so we could move forward to find a cure for this terrible disease. We must continue what Mimi has started. God Bless you Mimi, for you will be sorely missed.
I would like to end with a passage that Mimi had written [in Marcvh 2006] for our Teal Magnolia event that she was unable to attend.
"If we want to find a cure we have to fund a cure.It is easy to believe in the face of what may appear to be an insurmountable task,a mountain, that there is nothing one person can do. That is NOT true. Ovarian Cancer may be a mountain, but it is not an immovable force. If each of you take a stone, a piece of this mountain, and is generous with your time, your talent, and/or financial resources, the mountain will be moved. The movement has already begun."
