GEORGE W. POWERS, 73, of East Brunswick died Aug. 5 at home. Surviving are his wife, Nadine C. Miller Powers; a son, Eric Arauz of New Brunswick; two daughters, Cecelia Butta of the Fords section of Woodbridge and Gabrielle Arauz of New York City; and a sister, Doris Kerkes of Fanwood. Services are were held at Crabiel Home for Funerals, Milltown. KATHLEEN KUPSCH SICA LUSH, 96, of Holmdel, died Aug. 10 at Bayshore Senior Health Care Center, Holmdel. born in Sayreville, she resided there prior to moving to Holmdel 7 years ago. She was a former communicant of Our Lady of Victories Roman Catholic Church, Sayreville, and a member of several senior citizens groups. She was predeceased by her first husband, Frank Sica; her second husband, Robert Lush; and her son, Donald Sica. She is survived by four grandchildren, Alane Sica-Gephart of Bensalem, Pa., David Sica of Lansdale, Pa., Jeffrey Sica of Palm Coast, Fla., and Paul Sica of Sayreville; and three great-grandchildren. Services were arranged by Maliszewski Memorial Home, Sayreville, with a Mass at Our Lady of Victories Roman Catholic Church, Sayreville. Burial was at New Calvary Cemetery, the Parlin section of Sayreville.
DIANE ROMAGNA, 24, of Milltown died Aug. 10 at Raritan Bay Medical Center, Perth Amboy division. Surviving are her parents, John and Patricia Criss Romagna; and her brother, James Romagna also of Milltown. Services were held at the Rezem Funeral Home, East Brunswick, followed by a Mass at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Milltown. Interment was in Resurrection Cemetery, Piscataway.
ALFRED RUSCH, 72, of North Carolina died Aug. 10 at home. He was formerly of East Brunswick. Surviving are two sons, Joseph Rusch of North Carolina and Mark Rusch of Bricktown; a sister, Sr. Joanne Rusch of St. Peter's University Hospital, New Brunswick; and two granddaughters. Services were held at the Rezem Funeral Home, East Brunswick, followed by a Mass at Holy Trinity Church, Helmetta. Interment was in St. James Cemetery, Jamesburg.
RONALD M. ROMAN SR., 65, of Metuchen died Aug. 19 in JFK Haven Hospice, Edison. He was a 1956 graduate of Lafayette College, Easton, Pa., where he earned a bachelor of arts degree, and a 1966 graduate of Newark State College (now Kean University), Union, where he earned a master of arts degree in education and supervision. He taught social studies at Thomas Jefferson Junior High School, Edison, from 1959-1984, where he served as head of the social studies department from 1963-1984. He continued his teaching career at J.P. Stevens High School, Edison, from 1984-1995, and he was head teacher of the English as a Second Language program at Edison Adult School from 1973-1985. He served as an education supervisor for the state Juvenile Justice Commission from 1996-2000. A contributing writer for the political commentary columns in the New York Tribune newspaper, he also was co-owner of the Metuchen Craft Shoppe for 17 years, president of Metuchen Pop Warner, director and coach of Metuchen Little League and committee chairman of Metuchen Cub Scout Pack No. 69. He was a member of the National Education Association, the N.J. Education Association, the Middlesex County Education Association, the Edison Township Education Association, the American Corrections Association, the Metuchen-Edison Jaycees and Metuchen Elks Lodge No. 1914. A member of the Middlesex County Board of Chosen Freeholders from 1990-1993, he served as freeholder director in 1992. He served as president of the Metuchen Republican Club from 1985-1986 and was honored with the club's Republican of the Year award in 1991. He also was named Citizen of the Year in 1991 by the Metuchen Chamber of Commerce. He was a parishioner of St. Francis Cathedral, Metuchen. Surviving are his wife, Joan; a daughter, Karen Kesten and her husband, Jeff, of East Brunswick; two sons, Ronald Roman Jr., and his wife, Ellen, of Bryson City, N.C., and Michael Roman of Dania, Fla.; a grandson, Keith Kesten; two nieces and two nephews. Services were arranged by Flynn and Son Funeral Home, Fords section of Woodbridge, with a Mass of Christian Burial planned for Aug. 23 in St. Francis Cathedral. THE REV. LEONARD KUBERSKI, 58, of South River died Aug. 19 at home. He was a 1964 graduate of the University of Notre Dame (Ind.), where he earned a bachelor of arts degree in history in 1964 and a master of arts degree in scripture in 1978. He served as student manager of the Notre Dame football team and wrote the script for and appeared in the movie Rudy. He attended Catholic University Seminary, Washington, D.C., and was ordained to the priesthood in 1968. He currently was serving as pastor of St. Nicholas Byzantine Catholic Church, Dunellen. Prior to that, he served at St. John the Baptist Church, North Hampton, Pa.; St. Josaphat Church, Philadelphia; Saints Peter and Paul Church, Wilmington, Del.; St. Michael's Church, Chicago; and St. John the Baptist Church, Passaic. His parents, the late Leonard and Joan Poliny Kuberski, owned and operated Kuberski Riding Stables, South River, for many years. Arrangements were under the direction of Maliszewski Funeral Home, South River, with a Divine Liturgy planned for Aug. 24 at Nativity of Our Lord Byzantine Catholic Church, East Brunswick. Interment will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery, East Brunswick. Memorial contributions may be made as Mass offerings or to the charity of one's choice.
BRIAN DAVID BUTHY, 30, formerly of East Brunswick, died Aug. 11 at Community Hospital, Toms River. He was a resident of Barnegat. Surviving are his parents, Robert Buthy of Virginia and Dorine Robinson Fog of Belle Mead; a brother and sister-in-law, Kraig and Kerry Buthy of Bethel, Maine; a maternal grandmother, Dorothy Robinson of Ocean Beach; an aunt; uncle; and one niece. Services were arranged by The Crabiel Home for Funerals, Milltown, with a funeral service at Bayard Street Presbyterian Church, New Brunswick. Interment was in Franklin Memorial Park, North Brunswick.
ANNE M. HORVATH CASWELL, 87, of Spotswood died Aug. 16 in JFK Medical Center, Edison. She was predeceased by a son, William Caswell. STANLEY L. HILL, 71, of Toms River died Aug. 13 at Community Medical Center, Toms River. He was predeceased by a granddaughter, Danielle DiGiacomo, who died in 1999. Surviving are a son, Michael Hill of Texas; a daughter, Beverly DiGiacomo of Freehold Township; two brothers, Ralph Hill of Brigantine and Ronald Hill of San Jose, Calif.; a sister, Joyce Wilhelm of Milltown; and three grandchildren. Services were held at C.H.T. Clayton & Son Funeral Home, Howell. Interment was in Franklin Memorial Park, North Brunswick.
STELLA STARUCH KULBERDA, 94, of Perth Amboy died Aug. 19 in Franklin Convalescent Center, Franklin Park section of Franklin. Her husband, Joseph Kulberda, died in 1986. Surviving are two sons, Leonard Kulberda of South River and Raymond Kulberda of the Somerset section of Franklin; a daughter, Adeline Pucci of Bainsbridge, N.Y.; two brothers, Stephen and Matthew Stankiewitz, both of Perth Amboy; eight grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Services are planned for Aug. 23 at Maliszewski Funeral Home, South River. Interment will follow in Alpine Cemetery, Perth Amboy.
WILLIAM KURTZ, 99, of South River died Aug. 19 in Raritan Bay Medical Center, Old Bridge division. His wife, Pauline Roth Kurtz, died in 1986. Surviving are a sister, Harriet E. Kurtz of South River. ELIZABETH SZANTO LUKACH, 85, of South River died Aug. 18 in St. Peter's University Hospital, New Brunswick. Her husband, Louis, died in 1992. CATHERINE E. REGELSKI DISBROW, 84, of South River died Aug. 21 in Carriage House Manor, Sayreville. Her husband, Franklin W. Disbrow, died in 1995. WARREN W. EVANS, 78, died Aug. 21 at his home in Sunrise Assisted Living Center, East Brunswick. Surviving are a brother, Robert Evans of Camden, Ark., and several cousins, nieces and nephews. Services were held at Kohl's Community Funeral Home, Waupun, Wis. Interment was in Cambria Cemetery, Cambria, Wis. Local arrangements were under the direction of Rezem Funeral Home, East Brunswick.
JOSEPH TERRITO, 76, of Old Bridge died Aug. 14 at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick. Surviving are his wife, Ruby Leksell Territo; two sons, John Territo of Bordentown and Run Herr of Jamesburg; two daughters, Catherine Travis of Pennsylvania and Mary Buchanan of East Brunswick; a brother, Paul Territo of Pennsylvania; a sister, Grace Vitello of Highland Park; and four grandchildren. GEORGE VAN LIEW, 69, of Seaside Park died Aug. 14 at Raritan Bay Medical Center, Old Bridge division. He was formerly of Sayreville. He was predeceased by his wife, Laverne Schwarzenberg, in 1988 and three sisters, Ruth Albert, Myra Wnorowski and Agnes Czarnecki. Surviving are two sons, George Van Liew of Matawan and Greg Van Liew of Sayreville; two daughters, Donna Fanelli and Diane Karmel, both of Old Bridge; a brother, John Van Liew of the Dayton section of South Brunswick; two sisters, Madaline Vas and Johanna Smith, both of East Brunswick; and four grandchildren. HELEN KELLY WALTERS, 91, of Spotswood, formerly of Old Bridge, died Aug. 16 at the Madison Center in Old Bridge. She was predeceased by her husband, David Walters. Surviving are three daughters, Dorothy Johnston of Staten Island, N.Y., Barbara Dorrell of Spotswood, and Judith Schmidt of Union; 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Services were held at the Rezem Funeral Home, East Brunswick. Interment was in The Bethel Cemetery, Staten Island, N.Y.
ANNA PIERSON PIENTKA, 90, of South River died Aug. 20 in Cranbury Care Center, Monroe. She was predeceased by her husband, John Pientka, and by a daughter, Barbara Pientka. Surviving are two sons, William Pientka of Baldwinsville, N.Y., and John Pientka of Clay, N.Y.; five daughters, Margaret Johnson of Baldwinsville, Marion Day of St. Petersburg, Fla., Jeanne Jackson of Sterling Park, Va., Elizabeth Moore of Sibley, Ill., and Carol Thompson of Millstone; two brothers, Woodrow Pierson of Spotswood and Lester Pierson of La Verne, Calif.; 17 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Services were held at Rezem Funeral Home, East Brunswick. Interment was in Washington Monumental Cemetery, South River.
OLGA SAWUK, 81, of South River died Aug. 17 at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick. Surviving are her husband, John Sawuk of South River; a daughter, Luba Ferraro of Middlesex; a son, Michael Sawuk of North Brunswick; and a brother, John Niepowicz of the Ukraine. Services were held at the Maliszewski Funeral Home, South River, with a service at St. Andrew's Church, South Bound Brook. Interment was in St. Andrew's Cemetery.
GEORGE W. SMITH, 90, of East Brunswick died Aug. 14 at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick. He was predeceased by his wife, Eileen W. Gibbons Smith, and his son, John Smith. Surviving are a son, George J. Smith of East Brunswick; two daughters, Eileen Brennan of Colorado and Patricia Woods of Madison, Conn.; 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Services will be held Aug. 18 at the Rezem Funeral Home, East Brunswick, followed by a Mass at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, Old Bridge. Interment will be in St. Raymond's Cemetery, the Bronx, N.Y.
EILEEN WARD DOUGHERTY, 67, of Belford died Aug. 25 at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. She was born Sept. 19, 1932 in Brooklyn, N.Y., where she lived until moving to Belford 15 years ago. She worked as office manager for the Hit Show Club for 20 years. She was a member of the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians. She was predeceased by her husband, William J. Dougherty in 1981. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen and Ron Stark of Belford; a son and daughter-in-law, William J. and Ginny Dougherty of Port Monmouth; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Walter and Claire Ward of East Brunswick, and Brendan and Kay Ward of Morristown; three granddaughters and four grandsons. Services were arranged by John F. Pfleger Funeral Home Inc., Middletown. Services were held at the funeral home and at Holy Family Church, Union Beach. Interment was at Shoreland Memorial Park, Hazlet.
FRANK SAMUEL, 82, of Sayreville died Aug. 23 in Raritan Bay Medical Center, Perth Amboy division. His wife, Viola Wistuba Samuel, died in 1979. Surviving are two sons, Robert of Fort Madison, Iowa, and James of Jamesburg; a brother, Joseph Samuel of the Parlin section of Sayreville; two sisters, Loretta Suchicki of Parlin and Anna Korygoski of South River; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and his companion, Irene Wickers of Jamesburg. IRENE QUINN FRENZEL, 88, of South River died Aug. 29 at home. Her husband, Edward Frenzel, died in 1977. Surviving are a son, Lee Frenzel of Manahawkin; two daughters, Marlene Swirk of South River and Lois Luther of Monroe; a sister, Geraldine Pinkowski of South River; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. HELEN G. MOGOR, 83, of North Brunswick died Aug. 27 at St. Peter's University Hospital, New Brunswick. Born in Hungary, she resided in New Brunswick prior to moving to North Brunswick in 1960. She was a member of Ascension Lutheran Church, New Brunswick. She is survived by her husband of 64 years, James Mogor of North Brunswick; three daughters, Eleanor and son-in-law Richard Gonier of East Brunswick, Helen V. MARGARET LEISENTRITT OSSNER, 89, of Spotswood died Aug. 25 in St. Peter's University Hospital, New Brunswick. Her husband, Arthur Ossner, died in 1981. Surviving are a daughter, Carol Gloyd of Wilmington, Del.; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
