Terence William O'Connor
6/18/52 - Thursday, September 04, 2008
PENNINGTON - Terence William O’Connor, an educator recently residing in Pennington, died on September 4, 2008 as a result of cancer. He died in the Ewing home of his loving partner, Colette Gosselin, while under the care of Colette, family members and Princeton HomeCare Hospice team. Terry was born June 18, 1952 in Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He was the son of Bernice Marie (Farrell) and Colonel Joseph Francis O’Connor. As the youngest son of a military family, Terry lived in North Carolina, New Jersey, Kansas, Oklahoma, Germany, Virginia and Ireland before leaving home.
Terry was the loving and doting father of Kathleen Elizabeth (Katie) O’Connor, Joseph Cullen (Cullen) O’Connor, Carolyn Marie (Carrie) O’Connor and Michael Desmond (Mick). While not attending school, all children currently reside in either Pennington, NJ or Island Heights, NJ. Terry was most proud that his children agreed to continue working to establish themselves in work or to pursue their education during his illness. Terry was fortunate in his final 18 months to have discovered an open and loving relationship with Colette Gosselin. Terry was predeceased by his parents to whom he was a devoted and caring son. Terry was a loving brother to Robert E. O’Connor, J. Michael O’Connor, Marie Hislop, Marian McEvilly and Catherine Sullivan as well as loving cousin Timothy Farrell. Terry was loved by a large extended family of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and in-laws. He had strong personal and professional friendships throughout the world. Terry also leaves behind his former wife of 20 years, Susan O’Connor.
Terry enjoyed exploring, learning and experimenting with new ideas. He finished his secondary education at Blackrock College, Dublin, Ireland while the family was living in Ireland. He returned to the United State to matriculate at the University of Notre Dame in 1970.
Terry graduated Notre Dame in 1974 with a BA in English and Secondary Education. Terry returned to academe in 1977 when he enrolled at the University of Virginia. Terry obtained several graduate degrees, M.Ed. in 1978 and Ph.D. in 1985, from the University while working as a graduate assistant. His educational focus was social foundations of education. One of his earliest interests was the FoxFire educational approach which is an innovative learner-centered, community-based program that promoted the involvement of local people, community and culture in education. His interest in the relationship between culture and education is most evident in Terry’s dissertation, “The Social Dynamics of Indigenous Education, ” which evolved during research conducted over several months in Southern Thailand. His interest in indigenous education was fulfilled during long-term collaboration with educators in Southern Brazil while at ISU. Most recently he applied this expertise while teaching in TCNJ’s global studies program in Mallorca, Spain and Bolivia.
Terry spent one year at the Miami University, Ohio followed by sixteen years at Indiana State University (ISU). He transferred to The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) in 2002. Terry was a tenured professor and academic administrator at both ISU and TCNJ. His administrative titles at various times were Dean, School of Education (TCNJ) and Assistant to the Vice President for Academic Affairs (ISU). He had remarked that the highlight of his administrative work was the seven years he spent as the Director, Center for Teaching and Learning at ISU. No matter the administrative workload, Terry’s true love was the classroom. Consequently, he maintained a teaching load despite the heavy demands of his administrative obligations. Terry’s recent curriculum vitae listed twenty-eight professional publications, forty-one conference paper presentations and eight major grant projects.
Terry was known to put others, especially his children, first. Yet, his life was not only defined by sacrifice, teaching and learning. He was a joy to have in our lives. He had a wonderful sense of humor, enjoyed long conversation and nature walks. Terry loved to sing while strumming on his autoharp. Most of all Terry loved “messing about in boats!” He built several small boats, most recently a transparent rowboat, Fluffy, and fully restored a 27ft sailboat. He achieved one of his dreams by owning his own large sailboat, Lannai. In recent years Terry enjoyed weekends of sailing, fantail barbecues, and singing with Colette as his first mate.
