ELIZABETH "BETTE ANN" HAVRILLA SUPERIOR COHEN, 64, of the Parlin section of Sayreville died Feb. 21 at home. Surviving are her husband, Fred Cohen; a son, Robert Superior of Parlin; two brothers, George Havrilla of Alexandria, Va., and Dempsey Havrilla of North Brunswick; two sisters, Eve LaVerda of Cranford and Patricia Madama of Spotswood; three grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Services were held at Gundrum Service Home for Funerals, South Amboy. Interment
was in St. Gertrude Cemetery, Colonia section of Woodbridge.
MARGARET "PEGGY" SABO, 70, of South River, formerly of Milltown and East Brunswick, died Feb. 15 in CareOne at East Brunswick. Surviving are her husband, Joseph J.; a son, Joseph Jr. of Hightstown; a daughter, Mary Elizabeth Pechulis of South Amboy; five brothers, the Rev. John Hendricks, Robert Hendricks, Richard Hendricks, James Hendricks and David Hendricks; a sister, Kathryn Sanservino; and five grandchildren. A funeral liturgy was offered at Sacred Heart Church, New Brunswick. Entombment was in Resurrection Burial Park Mausoleum, Piscataway. JOHN W. SCHROF, 74, of Old Bridge died Feb. 20 in Raritan Bay Medical Center, Old Bridge division. Surviving are his wife, Norma Rivera Schrof; a son, John of Spotswood; a daughter, Kathryn Miller of Matawan; a sister, Sally Duran of Baltimore; and several nieces and nephews. A Mass was offered at St. Ambrose Church, Old Bridge. Entombment was in Holy Cross Burial Park, South Brunswick.
JOHN J. BURKE JR., 53, of Howell died Feb. 22 in St. Peter’s University Hospital, New Brunswick. Surviving are two daughters, Melissa Burke of Freehold and Doreen DeFella of Jackson; his parents, John J. Sr. and Grace Sloan Burke of Howell; a brother, James R. Burke of Old Bridge; and two sisters, Karen Whelan of Howell and Patricia Bargloski of the Forked River section of Dover. A committal service was held at Franklin Memorial Park Chapel, North Brunswick.
MARGUERITE M. COFFEY, 101, of New York City died Feb. 24 in McCarrick Care Center, Franklin Township. Surviving are a sister, Catherine C. Regan; a niece, Catherine M. Piznar of Monroe; a great-nephew, John R. Piznar; a great-niece, Mary C. Piznar; a great-great-nephew and a great-great-niece. A Mass was offered at St. Bartholomew’s Church, East Brunswick. RUTH C. SPRENG BATES, 84, of Sayreville died Feb. 16 in Raritan Bay Medical Center, Old Bridge division. A daughter, Kathleen Bates, died in 1991, and a son, William Bates, died in January. Surviving are two sons, John Bates of Sayreville and Elliott Bates of Jackson; a daughter, Phyllis Bates of Sayreville; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. A Mass is planned for 9:30 a.m. on Feb. 21 at Our Lady of Victories Church, Sayreville.
JOSEPH CARONE, 90, of Staten Island, N.Y., died Feb. 12 in Raritan Bay Medical Center, Old Bridge division. Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth Galossi Carone; a son, Joseph Carone Jr. of the Parlin section of Sayreville; a daughter, Madeline Schobert of Miami; a brother, John Carone of Staten Island; and two grandchildren. DIANE SABAT GRADY, 42, of Florida, formerly of the Parlin section of Sayreville, died Jan. 30 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Surviving are four brothers, Dennis Sabat of Marlton, Ronald Sabat of Boca Raton, Fla., Allen Sabat of Red Bank and Bruce Sabat of Sayreville. Services were held at Maliszewski Memorial Home, Sayreville. Cremation was private.
WALTER M. "WALLY" POCHOPIN, 71, of the Cliffwood Beach section of Old Bridge died Feb. 13 in Bayshore Community Hospital, Holmdel. Prior to his retirement in 1998, he was employed as a head custodian for the Old Bridge Board of Education for more than 22 years and worked at Madison Park School. Surviving are his wife, Rita Bellas-Pochopin; a daughter, Donna Nilsen of Keyport; a son, Daniel Pochopin; a brother, Stevie of Jensen Beach, Fla.; and two granddaughters. A Mass was offered at St. Lawrence Church, Laurence Harbor section of Old Bridge. Entombment was in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Parlin section of Sayreville.
WALTER THOMAS, 81, of the Laurence Harbor section of Old Bridge died Feb. 13 in Bayshore Community Hospital, Holmdel. Surviving are his wife, Stephanie Thomas; two daughters, Alice Olszewski of Laurence Harbor and Shirley Olszewski of the Leonardo section of Middletown; three sons, Walter Thomas of Pennsylvania, Danny Thomas of Michigan and James Thomas of Dover; two sisters, Margaret Olinger and Eleanor Sokolowski; a brother, Tony Ghigi; 14 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Services were held at Day Funeral Home, Keyport. Interment
was in Shoreland Memorial Gardens, Hazlet.
RAYMOND H. KUROWSKY, 85, of the Parlin section of Sayreville died Feb. 13 in Raritan Bay Medical Center, Old Bridge division. A daughter, Karen DeVaughn, died in 2001. Surviving are his wife, Celia Finan Kurowsky; a daughter, Diane Cannella of Sayreville; two sons-in-law, Peter Cannella of Sayreville and Louis DeVaughn of Alexandria, Va.; a sister, Ethel Epps of Perth Amboy; four grandchildren; and two nieces and three nephews. Services were held at First Presbyterian Church, Perth Amboy. Cremation was private. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or to breast cancer research.
