IRENE PELOSI, 79, of Atlantic Highlands died Nov. 22 at her daughter’s home in the Leonardo section of Middletown. Born in Nanty Glo, Pa., she resided in Highlands and Atlantic Highlands the past 28 years. She was predeceased by a daughter, Jenien Pelosi. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Diane and Fred Cole of Leonardo, and Barbara and Frank Christy of Eatontown; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Michael and Pat Pelosi of Texas, Richard and Ginger Pelosi of Asbury Park, and Angelo Pelosi of Connecticut; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Burial was at Bay View Cemetery, Leonardo.
MARY JANE FLANNERY, 76, of Aberdeen died Nov. 25 at home. Born in Star Junction, Pa., she had lived in Brooklyn, N.Y., before moving to Aberdeen 45 yeas ago. Mrs. Flannery was predeceased by her husband, William, in 1998; and a brother, John Hamilla in 2001. She is survived by her son, Gregg Flannery of Aurora, Colo.; two daughters, Ellen Flannery of Arlington, Va., and Patricia Flannery of Aberdeen; her brother, P. William Hamilla of New York City; her sister, Margaret Lyons of Dallas, Pa.; and one granddaughter, Katherine Flannery. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at St. Clement’s Roman Catholic Church, Matawan. Interment
was at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Keyport. Memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
EDWIN JOHN PETRY, 58, of Whiting died Nov. 25 at home. Born in New York City, he had lived in Union Beach before moving to Whiting four months ago. Mr. Petry was a maintenance worker for the Union Beach Board of Education, retiring one year ago. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Koerner Petry of Whiting; two daughters and sons-in-law, Kim and Edward Mace of Howell, and Laura and Richard Macklin of Nazareth, Pa.; his son and daughter-in-law, Eddie and Michelle Petry of the Belford section of Middletown; his sister and brother-in-law, Ann and Jerry Rehse of Ramsey; and six grandchildren. A memorial service was held at Westminster Presbyterian Church, Middletown.
SOPHIE C. ANDERSON, 91, of Holmdel died Nov. 26 at Arnold Walter Nursing Home, Holmdel. Born in Lost Creek, Pa., she resided in Hazlet prior to moving to Holmdel. Mrs. Anderson was a housekeeper at Marlboro State Hospital for 12 years, retiring in 1972. She was a communicant of Holy Family Roman Catholic Church, Union Beach. She was predeceased by her husband, William T., in 1971. She is survived by two sons, John A. Anderson of Virginia, and William T. Anderson Jr. of New Jersey; two daughters, Catherine Straniero of Hazlet and Mary Anderson of Maryland; 13 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at Holy Family Church, followed by interment at St. Rose of Lima Cemetery, Freehold Township.
ELEANOR M. GRENGER, 63, of Union Beach died Nov. 27 at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. Born in Elizabeth, she was a lifelong resident of Union Beach. Mrs. Grenger was a teaching assistant at Union Beach Preschool for 26 years, retiring in 2001. She was a member of the National Education Association (NEA) and the New Jersey NEA. She was predeceased by her brother, Donald J. Shugard, in 2001. She is survived by her husband, William Grenger of Union Beach; two sons, William Grenger Jr. of Hazlet and Robert Grenger of Galesferry, Conn.; her sister, Anne Ross of Venice, Fla.; and four grandchildren. Interment
was at Shoreland Memorial Gardens, Hazlet.
CHARLES S. CALI, 82, of Middletown died Nov. 18 at Avante at Red Bank. Born in Jersey City, he moved to Middletown 45 years ago. He was a retired tool and die maker at Penwalt/SS White, Holmdel, where he worked for 20 years. He was a communicant of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, New Monmouth section of Middletown. He was a member of the BPOE Elks, Red Bank, and the Middletown Italian American Club. He was predeceased by his wife, Michaelina Cali, in April. He is survived by three sons, Richard D. Cali of Manasquan, Charles J. Cali of West Long Branch, and David G. Cali of Middletown; a brother, Joseph Cali of Middletown; a sister, Jenny Pistone of Somerset; and seven grandchildren. Burial will be at Bay View Cemetery, Leonardo section of Middletown.
MARY DONLAN BRUNNER of Hazlet died Oct. 24 at Regency Park Nursing Center, Hazlet. Born in New York City, she resided in Mount Vernon and the Bronx, N.Y., and the Port Monmouth section of Middletown before moving to Hazlet in 2001. She was a secretary at W.A. Conroy & Son Insurance Agency, Keansburg, for 22 years, retiring in 1981. Prior to that, she was a secretary at Consolidate Edison, New York, for 10 years. She was a communicant of St. Ann’s Roman Catholic Church, Keansburg, and a member of its Rosary Altar Society. She was also a member of the Catholic Daughters of America. She enjoyed poetry, traveling to Ireland, and devoting time to her children and grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph Brunner, in 1981; a son, Joseph Brunner Jr., in 1992; and her sister, Elizabeth Donlan Cleary, in 1997. She is survived by her son, Robert Brunner of Alexandria, Va.; her daughter, Pat Callahan of Middletown; and six grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at St. Ann’s Roman Catholic Church, Keansburg. Burial was at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Middletown.
HENRY "HANK" J. VARNO, of the Belford section of Middletown, died Nov. 11 at home. Born in New York City, he lived in Teaneck before moving to Belford 55 years ago. He was a retired craftsman and lineman for AT&T, Newark, for 41 years. He served in the U.S. Air Force as a bombardier during World War II. He enjoyed spending time with his family. He was predeceased by his sister, Alice Mager. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mary Varno of Belford; two daughters, Mary Jergens of Middletown, and Kathleen O’Neill of the Port Monmouth section of Middletown; four sons, Henry Varno of Poolsville, Md., Edward Varno of Middletown, Robert Varno of Belford, and Thomas Varno of Atlantic Highlands; 20 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. A funeral liturgy was offered at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, New Monmouth section of Middletown. Burial was at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Middletown.
VERONICA A. JANTHOR, 83, of Aberdeen died Nov. 12 at home. Born in Long Island City, N.Y., she resided in Queens, N.Y., prior to moving to Aberdeen 39 years ago. Mrs. Janthor was a homemaker. She was a communicant of St. Benedict’s Roman Catholic Church, Holmdel. She was predeceased by her husband, William G. Janthor Jr., in 2001; and her son, William Janthor III, in 1981. She is survived by three daughters, Joan Sable of Smithtown, N.Y., Jane Janthor of Germany, and Claire Babicke of Solon, Ohio; two brothers, Thomas Halpin of Phoenix and Eugene Halpin of Florida; her sister, Rita Halpin of New York; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at St. Benedict’s Church, followed by interment at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Keyport.
STEPHEN S. RINALDI, 47, of the Lincroft section of Middletown died Nov. 15 at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. He was a lifelong resident of Lincroft. He was employed at the Asbury Park Press. He was a communicant of St. Leo the Great Roman Catholic Church, Lincroft. He was a graduate of Christian Brothers Academy, and attended Brookdale Community College, both Lincroft. He was predeceased by his father, Samuel A. Rinaldi, in 1970. He is survived by his mother, Jane A. Rinaldi of Lincroft; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Lo Lo and John Joyce Jr. of Jackson, and Serena and Christopher Adams of Middletown; an aunt; one nephew; and several friends.
