Gertrude "Trudy" V. Gregg

Mrs. Gregg, 80, of Shrewsbury died June 22 at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. Born in New York City, she resided in Toms River prior to moving to Shrewsbury 60 years ago. Mrs. Gregg was a homemaker. Prior to that, she was a sales representative at Steinbach’s, Red Bank, and worked in the drafting department at Lakehurst Naval Air Station. She was an active member of First Presbyterian Church at Red Bank-Tower Hill, where she was a Sunday school teacher and a member of the Women’s Circle. She also was a Girl Scout leader for several years. Mrs. Gregg was predeceased by a sister, May Applegate. She is survived by her husband of 59 years, William E. Gregg Jr.; a son and daughter-in-law, William E. and Mary Gregg III of Wantage; a daughter and son-in-law, Diana and Robert Mielech of the Belford section of Middletown; and five grandchildren. Entombment was at Fair View Cemetery, Middletown. The John E. Day Funeral Home, Red Bank, was in charge of arrangements.

Ronald M. Obach

Mr. Obach, 74, of Tinton Falls died June 9 at Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch, following a lengthy illness. He was born in Ridgefield Park. Mr. Obach was employed at Fort Monmouth, where he performed military service for 27 years and retired with the rank of colonel. He was a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y. He earned a master’s degree from Harvard University, Cambridge, Mass., and a master of military arts and science at the Command and General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. He was predeceased by his first wife, Margaret Rose Obach. Mr. Obach is survived by his wife, Ellen Walch Obach; a daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Fred Colson of Clearwater, Fla.; a son and daughter-in-law, Philip and Vera Obach of New Port Richey, Fla.; a sister and brother-in-law, Phyllis and Jack Kaufhold of River Edge; a daughter-in-law, Selena Zito; two stepsons; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Interment was at the U.S. Military Academy, West Point. The Damiano Funeral Home, Long Branch, was in charge of arrangements. Memorial donations may be made to the West Point Fund, Class of 1952 Gift Fund, U.S. Military Academy at West Point, West Point, NY 10996.

Rose DeFazio Johnson

Mrs. Johnson, 80, of Red Bank died May 28 at home. Born in Red Bank, she was a lifelong resident. She was a former employee at Fort Monmouth, Eatontown. Mrs. Johnson is survived by her husband of 58 years, Gerald P. Johnson Sr.; a son and daughter-in-law, Gerald P. Jr. and Cheryl Johnson of Jamestown, R.I.; a daughter and son-in-law, Patricia A. and David J. McGuire of Middletown; a brother, Americo DeFazio of Fair Haven; two sisters, Wilma DeFazio and Antoinette DeFazio, both Red Bank; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Interment was at Fair View Cemetery, Middletown. The John E. Day Funeral Home, Red Bank, was in charge of arrangements.

Robert I. Dixon

Mr. Dixon, 67, of Rumson died May 16 at home following a lengthy illness. Born in Washington, D.C., he resided in Brooklyn, N.Y., prior to moving to Rumson 30 years ago. Mr. Dixon was a crossing guard for the Borough of Red Bank. He also owned and operated a coin business at the Red Bank Antique Center for 20 years, retiring in 2001. Prior to that, he was a security guard at Rumson Country Club, was employed at the Provost Marshal’s Office of Fort Monmouth Police, and was a patrolman with the Red Bank Police Department for 15 years. He served with the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He was a lifetime member of the Garden State Numismatic Association. Mr. Dixon is survived by his companion of 14 years, El, and her family. Arrangements were by John E. Day Funeral Home, Red Bank.

Anna DiTicco DeSanctis

Mrs. DeSanctis, 97, died May 25 in San Giovanni Teatino, Italy. Born in Silvi, Italy, she immigrated to the United States and resided in Brooklyn, N.Y., and Red Bank prior to moving to San Giovanni Teatino five years ago. Mrs. DeSanctis was a homemaker. She was predeceased by her husband of 61 years, Vincenzo DeSanctis, in 1991; a son, Alex, in 2002; and a daughter-in-law, Julia, in 2001. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Benito and Yone DeSanctis of Citta St. Angelo, Italy, and Dino and Romilde DeSanctis of Hazlet; two daughters and sons-in-law, Leda and Remo DiBlasio of Red Bank, and Elsa and Vincent Capella of Toms River; 17 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at St. Anthony of Padua Roman Catholic Church, Red Bank. Interment was at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Middletown. The John E. Day Funeral Home, Red Bank, was in charge of arrangements.

M. Alice Rigby Walsh

Mrs. Walsh, 82, of Shadow Lake Village, Red Bank, died May 7 at home. Born in Elizabeth, she resided in Roselle prior to moving to Monmouth County in 1974. She was a home­maker. Prior to that, she was employed at Prudential, Holmdel, and Sears, Middletown. She was a communicant of St. Benedict’s Roman Catholic Church, Holmdel. She was predeceased by three brothers, William, Wilbert and Raymond Rigby. She is survived by her husband, Joseph D. Walsh; two sons, John D. Walsh of Princeton, and Joseph W. Walsh of West Redding, Conn.; two daughters, Alice M. Walsh Renales of Roselle, and Carol A. Walsh Van Severen of Red Bank; a brother, Gerald Rigby of Colonia; five grandchildren; and one great-grandson. A memorial service was at St. Benedict’s Church. Interment was at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Middletown. Arrangements were by Day Funeral Home, Keyport. Memorial donations may be made to Neuromuscular and ALS Center, Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, 97 Paterson St., New Brunswick 08903.

Claude Jerold Covington

Mr. Covington, 62, of Red Bank died Aug. 5. Born in Leaksville, N.C., he served with the U.S. Air Force in Istanbul, Turkey. Following his return, he resided in North Carolina prior to moving to Red Bank 40 years ago. Mr. Covington was an operations manager at IBM, Dayton section of South Brunswick, retiring in 1993. He enjoyed time with his family and friends, and going to Atlantic City. He was predeceased by his father, Robert Lindsey Covington; and two brothers, Robert and Leonard Covington. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Marika Stires Covington; a daughter and son-in-law, Katherine and George Covington-Terzopoulos of Red Bank; his mother, Christine Bibee; a brother, Van Covington of North Carolina; one granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service was held at Kimisis Tis Theotokou Greek Orthodox Church, Holmdel. Entombment was at Fair View cemetery Mausoleum, Middletown. The John E. Day Funeral Home, Red Bank, was in charge of arrangements. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 801 Broad St., Shrewsbury 07702.

Josephine A. "Josie" Tomasini

Miss Tomasini, 75, of Red Bank, died Aug. 7 at Staten Island University Hospital, N.Y., following a lengthy battle with cancer. She resided in Atlantic Highlands prior to moving to Red Bank seven years ago. She was an executive secretary at Eastman Kodak, New York City, where she was employed for more than 40 years. She was a member of the American Littoral Society, Sandy Hook, Shadow Lake Bowling Club, and various environmental groups. She enjoyed reading, the beach, and visiting lighthouses. She is survived by several siblings, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Interment was at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington. Arrangements were by John E. Day Funeral Home, Red Bank. Memorial donations may be made to the American Littoral Society National Headquarters, Fort Hancock, Sandy Hook 07732.

Angelina Nesci Procopio Heck

Mrs. Heck, 90, of Sayreville died Aug. 1 at Raritan Bay Medical Center, Perth Amboy. Born in Girifalco, Italy, she resided in Red Bank before moving to Sayreville 30 years ago. Mrs. Heck was a homemaker. Prior to that, she was a seamstress at Adams Brothers, Red Bank. She was a communicant of St. Anthony of Padua Roman Catholic Church, Red Bank, and a member of the Sayreville Senior Citizens Center. She was predeceased by her fist husband, Peter D. Procopio, in 1967. Mrs. Heck is survived by her husband of 33 years, Stephen Heck; two sons and daughters-in-law, Peter P. and Mary Lou Procopio of Middletown, and Stephen M. and Janice Procopio of Parlin; a daughter; Kathryn Brewer of Oceanport; a sister, Lucy Apel of the Belford section of Middletown; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at St. Anthony’s Church, followed by interment at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Middletown. The John E. Day Funeral Home, Red Bank, was in charge of arrangements.

Nicholas F. Romano

Mr. Romano, 84, of Red Bank, died Oct. 3 at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. Born in Red Bank, he resided most of his life in Red Bank. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a communicant of and member of the Holy Name Society at St. Anthony of Padua Roman Catholic Church, Red Bank. He was a social member for more than 25 years at the Liberty Hose No. 94 Fire Co., Red Bank, and past captain of the Red Bank Fire Police. He was also a member of the advisory committee at Red Bank Senior Center, and a former crossing guard at Red Bank Primary School. He was predeceased by his brother, Jimmy Romano. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Benedetta “Bess” Romano; four daughters, Susan Andreasi, Bernadette Romano, Barbara Jiminaro and Marie Miller; and four grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Anthony’s Church. Interment followed at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Middletown. Arrangements were by John E. Day Funeral Home, Red Bank. Catherine Rose Akers

Mrs. Akers, 54, of Shrewsbury, died Oct. 5 at Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch. Born in Metuchen, she resided there before moving to Shrewsbury. Mrs. Akers was a labor and delivery nurse at Monmouth Medical Center for several years. She earned her bachelor of science in nursing degree in 1999. She was predeceased by her father, Elwood Gray. Mrs. Akers is survived by her husband of 15 years, Nigel; her mother, Mary Gray; a son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Kelley Stiles; two daughters and sons-in-law, Meredith and Brian Lienemann, and Rose and Byron Brewer; two brothers, Jim and Kevin Gray; two sisters, Mary Anne Knabe and Karen Hanna; a stepson; a stepdaughter; and one grandson. A funeral service was offered at Church of the Holy Communion, Fair Haven, followed by interment at Hillside Cemetery, Metuchen. The John E. Day Funeral Home, Red Bank, was in charge of arrangements.
