JOYCE B. GRIFFIN, 74, of Fair Haven died Feb. 26 at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick. Born in Newark, she resided in the River Plaza section of Middletown and Little Silver prior to moving to Fair Haven 36 years ago. Mrs. Griffin was a homemaker. Her activities included needlework, knitting, antiquing, time at the beach, and her two cats. She is survived by her husband, James A. Griffin; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Christian E. Griffin of Fair Haven, and Doug and Pam Griffin of Howell; her brother, Doug Burkhardt of Arnold, Md.; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. MARY FLORENCE CEJKA SYTSMA, 59, of Little Silver died Feb. 27 at home after a battle with cancer. Born in New Brunswick, she resided in Delaware and Michigan until 1980, when she lived in Red Bank and Rumson before moving to Little Silver. Mrs. Sytsma was a retired high school English teacher at the Children’s Center of Monmouth County, Neptune. She was also a teacher of handicapped children. She was an active member and ordained deacon at the First Presbyterian Church at Red Bank-Tower Hill. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She was predeceased by her parents, Florence Voorhees and Joseph B. Cejka. Mrs. Sytsma is survived by her husband, James Sytsma; two daughters and one son-in-law, Jennifer Lesniak, and Kristen and Michael Battle; her sister and brother-in-law, Barbara and David Littleton; several nieces and nephews; and one grandniece. A funeral service was held at First Presbyterian Church at Red Bank-Tower Hill. Burial was at Fair View Cemetery, Middletown. JANE GANDORF CAVANAUGH, 95, of Shrewsbury died Jan. 20 at home. Born in Red Bank, she resided in Queens, N.Y., prior to relocating to the Red Bank area in 1972. She was a retired seamstress at Eisner’s, Red Bank. Her activities included card-playing, travel, and rooting for the New York Yankees. She was predeceased by her husband, Victor Cavanaugh in 1976; and five sisters, Ella Gandorf, Rose Gandorf, Margaret G. Luddle, Catherine G. Lamberson and Winifred G. Cavanaugh. She is survived by her nephew, Douglas Cavanaugh of Red Bank; her daughter-in-law, Pat Cavanaugh of New York; her lifelong friend, Marie Hammond of Eatontown; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at St. James Roman Catholic Church, Red Bank. Interment
was at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Middletown.
ALICE ELVERSON BARR LENTHE, 84, of Columbus, Ohio, died Feb. 18 in Columbus. A longtime resident of Rumson, she moved to Columbus in 1993 to be near her daughter and son-in-law. LUCY PERRI SEALS, 79, of Gulfport, Miss., and formerly Long Branch, died Feb.. 15 in Biloxi, Miss. Born in Long Branch, she resided in Gulfport the past 20 years. She was a retired employee of San Alfonso Retreat House, Long Branch. She was a former parishioner of Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church, Long Branch. She was predeceased by a sister, Jean Hill. She is survived by her husband, Dorce Seals of Gulfport, Miss.; two daughters, Patricia Ponder of Gulfport, and Naoma D’Angelo of Pikeville, Tenn.; two sons, David L. Seals of Gulfport, and James E. Seals of Picayune, Miss.; three sisters, Mary Mellaci of Virginia, Mildred Colmorgen of Delaware, and Angie Calabrese of Gulfport; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
GLADYS G. SAUNDERS, of the Oakhurst section of Ocean Township, died Feb. 16 at Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch, after a lengthy illness. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she resided in Deal, and the Elberon section of Long Branch prior to moving to Oakhurst in 1965. She was the owner and operator of the public relations firm, gg.saunders and Associates, Wall, Township, which she founded in 1982. She was a member of Temple Beth Miriam, Elberon, and a member and supporter of Hadassah. She was the assistant director of the Chamber of Commerce, Wall Township, for several years. Her activities included tennis, cycling, and spending time at the shore. She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Harold Saunders of Oakhurst; two sons, Charles-Philip Saunders of Sonoma, Calif., and Ronald Jay Saunders of San Francisco, Calif.; and two sisters, Sylvia Katen of Merrick, N.Y., and Rosalyn Rosen of Brooklyn, N.Y. ISABELLA GRACE MOYNIHAN APY, eight weeks, died Feb. 16 at the Children’s Hospital of Boston after a brief illness. She was born Dec. 17 in Charlotte, N.C. She is survived by her parents, Kathy and Ed Apy Jr. of Charlotte, N.C.; her twin brother, Charlie; and her maternal grandparents, Florence and John Moynihan of University Park, Fla.; and her paternal grandparents, Sharon and Ed Apy of Sea Bright. MARY MUZZI IANICELLI, 84, of West Long Branch died Feb. 18 at Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch. Born in Boston, Mass., she resided in Monmouth County the past 72 years. She was a retired employee of Food Circus, Long Branch, and McDonald’s, West Long Branch. She was a parishioner of St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church, Long Branch. She was predeceased by her husband, Frank Ianicelli in 1977; her brothers, Freddy Muzzi and James Muzzi; and a granddaughter, Mary Ellen Goldsberry. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Anthony and Tina Ianicelli of Monmouth Beach; two daughters and one son-in-law, Claire Wheeler of Ocean Township, and Maryann and Richard Smeltzer of West Long Branch; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. MICHAEL JOHN SICIGNANO, 50, of Long Branch died Feb. 19 at Hackensack University Medical Center. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., he resided in Long Branch since 1981. He was the owner and operator of his own furniture business, as well as a factory representative since 1998. He was also employed at Levitz Furniture for more than 16 years. He was a parishioner of Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church, Long Branch. He was a member of the New York Home Furnishings Association. He is survived by his wife, Helen Elizabeth Thompson Sicignano of Long Branch; two sons, Joseph and Michael Sicignano, both at home; his father and mother, Joseph and Grace Vadala Sicignano of West Chester, Pa.; and his sister, Mary Ann Dignen of Exton, Pa. GORDON FORSYTH JR., 77, of Lakewood died Feb. 19 at the Medical Center of Ocean County, Brick. Born in Long Branch, he resided in Little Silver, and Fair Haven prior to moving to Lakewood 2 1/2 years ago. He was the chief financial officer at Reinsurance Corporation of New York, New York City, for 35 years, retiring in 1980. Prior to that, he was employed with the firm of Froggett and Company, Newark, for six years. He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II. He is survived by his wife, Virginia Forsyth of Lakewood; his son and daughter-in-law, Gordon and Joan Forsyth III of Fair Haven; two daughters and sons-in-law, Linda F. and Larry Smith of Centerville, Ohio, and Deborah F. and Rudolph Frenville Jr. of Toms River; his sister, Gladys Frick of Dover, Del.; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. A funeral service was held at St. George’s By The River Episcopal Church, Rumson. Interment
