JEAN O. BAECHTLE, 83, of Union Beach died March 5 at home following a long illness. Born in Newark, she resided in Union, Hillside and Red Bank before moving to Union Beach to live with her daughter’s family. Mrs. Baechtle was employed at Bristol-Myers Squibb for more than 40 years prior to retirement. Her activities included spending time with her family, and serving as an advocate for animal and environmental rights. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Karen J. and James P. GORDON C. HOPKINS, 87, of Freehold died March 7 at Applewood Estates Health Care, Freehold. Born in Port Jefferson, N.Y., he lived in Red Bank and Moorestown before moving to Freehold in 1990. Mr. Hopkins was vice president of marketing at Radiomarine Corp., Red Bank, where he worked several years until his retirement. He was also employed for several years at A&S, Monmouth Mall, Eatontown. He was a former member of the First Presbyterian Church of Rumson, and Freehold. He was very active at Applewood Estates, where he was the first president of the Applewood Residents Association. He also established its wood shop and assisted residents in creating and repairing furniture, and delivered daily newspapers to residents. His activities included boating, and driving in the country. Mr. Hopkins was predeceased by his wife, Louise Chase Hopkins. He is survived by two daughters and one son-in-law, Ellen L. Hopkins of Miller Place, N.Y., and Betty Jane and James Dickensheets of Marbleton, Ga.; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
VICTOR DAVID COSKEY JR., 65, of Colts Neck, died March 1 at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Pa. Born in New Brunswick, he lived in North Brunswick before moving to Colts Neck 30 years ago. He graduated from New Brunswick High School and the RCA Institute in New York City. He served in the military at Fort Dix and Fort Monmouth where he taught electronics. He worked at Westinghouse Co., where he was instrumental in the development of color television, before starting his own business, Coskey’s Radio & Television Sales and Services, now known as Coskey Electronic Systems, in North Brunswick. He was a choir director for several area churches, including East Brunswick Assembly of God and Freehold Assembly of God. He was a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary. Surviving are his wife of 44 years, Judy Mae Watson Coskey; one son and daughter-in-law, Victor David III and Tanya Coskey of Tinton Falls; two daughters, Amy Coskey of Freehold and Stephanie Coskey of Red Bank; a brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Diane Coskey of St. Louis; and three grandchildren. Funeral services were held at Full Gospel Church in Wall Township, followed by interment in Van Liew Cemetery, North Brunswick.
ANTHONY J. ASTERINO, 93, of the Cliffwood section of Aberdeen died March 13 at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. Born in Trenton, he resided in Newark, and Nanicoke, Pa., prior to moving to Cliffwood in 1966. He was a batch maker at Inter Chemical Corp./BASF Corp., Newark, retiring in 1966. He served with the U.S. Army during peacetime, serving at Scofield Barracks, Hawaii, and also traveled through the Panama Canal. He was an avid boxer and was a featherweight boxing champion while in Hawaii. He was predeceased by his wife, Mary E. Asterino in 1991. He is survived by three daughters, Marion Stegner of Florida, Evelyn Smith of Massachusetts, and Margaret Laschi of Cliffwood; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, Keyport. Interment
was at St. Catharine’s Cemetery, Sea Girt.
MILDRED T. LACH GARELICK, 81, of Keyport died March 13 at home. Born in Philadelphia, she resided in Bayonne prior to moving to Keyport 15 years ago. She was a homemaker. Prior to that, she and her husband were proprietors of a Bayonne candy store until retirement in 1965. She was predeceased by her husband, Harry M. Garelick in 1951. She is survived by her daughter, Diane Tracy of the Morganville section of Marlboro; her sister, Freida Walinski of Bayonne; two brothers, Chester Lach of Old Bridge, and Henry Lach of Brick; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Day Funeral Home, Keyport, was in charge of funeral arrangements.
MARY "JAY" O’SHAUGHNESSY, 63, of Hazlet died April 7 at Bayshore Community Hospital, Holmdel. Born in New York City, she resided in the Bronx, N.Y., prior to moving to Hazlet 31 years ago. Mrs. O’Shaughnessy was a customer service representative at Pathmark, Hazlet, for 25 years, retiring in 1998. She was a parishioner of Holy Family Roman Catholic Church, Union Beach. She was predeceased by her husband, Donald O’Shaughnessy, in 2002. She is survived by her daughter, Mandy O’Shaughnessy of Hazlet; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Donald O’Shaughnessy of Hazlet, and Brian and Hillary O’Shaughnessy of the Oakhurst section of Ocean Township; and one granddaughter. Visitation will be April 11 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at Holmdel Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered April 12 at 9:30 a.m. at Holy Family Roman Catholic Church, Union Beach.
HENNIE OLSESN ORMSTRUP, 90, of West Long Branch died March 26 at St. Barnabas Hospice, Long Branch. Born in Denmark, she resided in West Long Branch the past 25 years. Mrs. Ormstrup was a homemaker. She was a member of the Church of the Reformation, West Long Branch. Her activities included bingo, reading and gardening. She was predeceased by her husband, Hans Ormstrup, in 1981. She is survived by two daughters, Betty Nielsen of West Long Branch and Susan Sims of Milltown; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.
GAVIN ANTHONY REA, 12 days of age, Eatontown, died April 5 at Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch. Gavin was born in Long Branch. He was predeceased by his twin brother, Owen Anthony Rea, on March 24. He is survived by his parents, Anthony and Courtney Stahl Rea of Eatontown; his maternal grandparents, John and Leslie Stahl of Eatontown; his paternal grandparents, Shelia and John Brennan of Killarney, Ireland, and James Rea of Ireland; three aunts and one uncle, Ivey and John Bettigole of the Lincroft section of Middletown, Michele and Martin Spellman of Ireland, and Lauren Stahl of Eatontown; and five cousins.
THORKILD "TOM" OLSEN, 92, of Tinton Falls died March 26 at Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch. Born in Kristiansand, Norway, he had resided in Tinton Falls since 1979. Mr. Olsen was a lumberjack at various logging companies in Canada and Maine from 1945-75. He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II. He enjoyed baseball and boxing. He is survived by his grandnephew and his wife, Walter and Debra Olsen of Tinton Falls, with whom he lived; his nephew, Herbert Olsen of California; two grandnieces, Shari Williams of Jackson and Aljean Simpson of California; and several great-grandnephews and -grandnieces.
HELEN E. "BILLIE" LANGE WILLIS, 86, of Shrewsbury died March 30 at her daughter’s Red Bank home. Born in Shrewsbury, she was a lifelong resident. Mrs. Willis was a bookkeeper at Eisner’s, Red Bank, and a computer operator at SeaLand, Newark, until her retirement. She was a charter member of Shrewsbury Hose Company No. 1 Ladies Auxiliary, and a member of the Shrewsbury Senior Homesteaders. She was predeceased by her husband, Willard Willis; her brother, George Lange; and a sister, Margaret Norris. She is survived by her son, Michael Willis of Florida; her daughter and son-in-law, Arlene and Jacob Bloom of Red Bank; three sisters, Marie Sagurton, Evelyn Tryens and Ruth Cooney; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Interment
