HELEN E. HAGGAS, 83, of Lakewood, died July 3 at home. She resided in Jersey City before moving to Lakewood in 1962. She was a communicant of St. Mary of the Lake Roman Catholic Church in Lakewood. She was a member of the American Legion Women’s Auxiliary No. 348 as well as Veterans of Foreign Warts Post No. 8867. She served as PTA president at the Spruce Street School in 1972. Mrs. Haggas is survived by her husband of 58 years, Gilbert Haggas of Lakewood; two daughters, Margaret Pedraza of Howell and Karen Schwab of Jackson; a son, William Haggas of Keysville, Va.; and five grandchildren. A funeral Mass was offered at St. Mary of the Lake Roman Catholic Church in Lakewood. Interment
was in Ocean County Memorial Park, Toms River.
VICTOR MENDOLIA, 68, of Whiting died July 11 at Community Medical Center, Toms River. Born in Brooklyn, he had lived in Howell and Lakewood before moving to Whiting three years ago. Mr. Mendolia was a medical technician at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township, for 15 years before retiring in 1995. Surviving are several aunts and cousins, and his friends Joseph Caruso, Donald Caruso and Robert Ernes. A graveside service was held at Old Tennent Cemetery, Tennent section of Manalapan.
JAMES R. MAXWELL, 67, of Marlboro died July 13 at St. Peter’s University Hospital, New Brunswick. Born in New York City, he had lived in Brooklyn, N.Y., for 47 years before moving to Marlboro 10 years ago. Before his retirement in 1979, Mr. Maxwell was a New York City police officer for 21 years, most recently at the 69th Precinct in Brooklyn. After retiring from the N.Y.P.D., he was a federal police officer at the Veterans Administration Medical Center, Fort Hamilton, Brooklyn, for several years. He was a life member of the New York City Policemen’s Benevolent Association. Mr. Maxwell was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, and a member of New Jersey Post 100 of the American Legion. He was a communicant of St. Thomas the Apostle Roman Catholic Church, Old Bridge, and a member of St. Thomas Council No. 4815, Knights of Columbus, Old Bridge. Mr. Maxwell is survived by his wife of 38 years, Frances Horn Maxwell; a son and daughter-in-law, James K. and Ellen Maxwell of East Brunswick; a daughter and son-in-law, Dorothy and Christopher Brown of East Brunswick; two brothers, Robert Maxwell of Brooklyn and Richard Maxwell of Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y.; a sister, Carole Ward of Breezy Point, N.Y.; and three grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, followed by interment at Holy Cross Burial Park, South Brunswick. JOHN GRINKEVICH, 75, of The Villages, Howell, died July 9 at home. Mr. Grinkevich was born in Garfield and had lived in the Wickatunk section of Marlboro for five years and in Marlboro for 34 years before moving to Howell two years ago. He served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps in Germany during the Korean War. Mr. Grinkevich was a stock checker for the Ford Motor Company, Edison, where he was employed for 39 years before his retirement 12 years ago. Surviving are his wife, Kazimiera C. Szurlej Grinkevich; two sons and daughters-in- law, John and Robin Grinkevich, Cream Ridge, and Richard and Donna Grinkevich, Manalapan; three daughters, Karen and Joseph Lupton, Atlanta, Ga., a brother, Joseph Grinkevich, Jackson; a sister, Anne Rose, Howell; and 12 grandchildren, Daniel, Ryan, Matthew, Taylor, Dana, Melissa, Jake, Alex, Paul, Jack, James and Christopher. Funeral services were held at the Higgins Memorial Home, Freehold Borough. Interment

LARIMER LANE CHISHOLM, 75, of Freehold Township died July 11 at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township. Born in Arkansas, he had lived in Florida before moving to Freehold Township. Mr. Chisholm was a truck driver and dispatcher for North American Van Lines, Gainesville, Fla., until his retirement. He also was an arborist. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II. He was predeceased by a brother, Norwood, in 1956. Mr. Chisholm is survived by two sons, Steve Chisholm of Jackson and Jon Chisholm of Charlotte, N.C.; two daughters, Cheryl Comiskey of Freehold and Carol Lail-Wornick of Forest City, N.C.; two brothers, Gary Chisholm of DeFuniak Springs, Fla., and Leonard Chisholm of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; a sister, Erlene Chisholm of Brielle; four grandsons; and five great-grandchildren. Pastor Kenneth Underhill of the Jackson Baptist Church officiated at the funeral service. Interment

NORMAN G. HILLERS, 81, of Freehold Township died July 17 at home. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., he had lived in Queens, N.Y., before moving to Silvermead, Freehold Township, in 1988. Mr. Hillers was a foreman at Parker & Stearns and Ideal Rubber and Plastics, Brooklyn, retiring in 1975. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having served in Normandy and central Europe. He was a member of the Silvermead Community Club, Freehold Township. Mr. Hillers is survived by his wife of 61 years, Anna Hillers; a son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth J. and Maureen Hillers of Freehold Township; and two grandchildren. Burial will be at Brig. Gen. William C. Doyle Veterans Cemetery, Arnytown, with the date and time to be announced. The C.H.T. Clayton & Son Funeral Home, Adelphia section of Howell, is in charge of arrangements.
DR. LESTER B. YOUNG, 83, of Johnson City, Tenn., died July 5 at Ivy Hall Nursing Home, Elizabethton, Tenn. A graduate of Auburn (Ala.) University School of Veterinary Medicine, he was the owner of Young’s Animal Clinic, Johnson City, before retiring in 1983. He served on the Tennessee State Veterinary Examining Board and was one of the organizers of the Appalachian Veterinary Association. He was awarded the Tennessee Veterinary Medical Association Distinguished Service Award. Dr. Young was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Johnson City, where he served as a deacon and an elder. He was also a member of the Horticulture Interest Society. He was predeceased by two brothers, Bert and Raymond Young, and two sisters, Lola Remine Carter and Lela Lacy. Surviving are his wife, Geneva Gouge Young, of Johnson City; two sons, Lester B. Young Jr. and his wife, Adele, of Freehold Township, and George S. Young and his wife, Pam, of Elizabethton; a daughter, Marlene, and her husband, Dr. Andy Collins of Kingsport, Tenn.; six grandchildren, Alan Young and his wife, Amanda, of Philadelphia, Leslie Young of Freehold Township, Andy and Matthew Young of Elizabethton, and Kimberly and Christopher Collins of Kingsport; and a brother, Roy Young of Johnson City. The funeral service was conducted at First Presbyterian Church, Johnson City, followed by interment at the Patton-Simmons Cemetery, Carter County, Tenn.
DORA GIGGENBACH, 97, of Howell, died July 4 at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township. Born in Turkheim, Germany, she came to New York City in 1930 and resided in Freehold prior to moving to Howell in 1952. She was a homemaker. She was a member of the Lakewood Maennorchor, and the Silvermead Ladies Hospital Auxiliary, Freehold Township. She was predeceased by her husband, Casper Giggenbach in 1992. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Karl E. and Shirley Giggenbach; her sister, Theresa Maier of Turkheim, Germany; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. WILLIAM A. AGOVINO, 58, of Manalapan, died July 5 at Robert Wood Johnson University Medical Center, New Brunswick. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., he resided there several years prior to moving to Manalapan. He was a salesman at Patterson Dental Co., Totowa. He served with the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War. He ws a communicant of St. Thomas More Roman Catholic Church, Manalapan. He is survived by his wife, Frances Barone Agovino of Manalapan; two sons and daughters-in-law, Ed and Dawn Agovino of the Monmouth Junction section of South Brunswick, and William A. and Christie Agovino of Santa Clarita, Calif.; his daughter, April Agovino of Manalapan; his mother, Viola Agovino of Freehold, N.Y.; his sister and brother-in-law, Lola and Ed Migliaccio of Freehold, N.Y.; and his grandson. A funeral liturgy was offered at St. Thomas More Roman Catholic Church, Manalapan. Interment
was at Old Tennent Cemetery, Manalapan.
JEAN PLATANIA, 87, of Manalapan, died July 7 at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township. Born in Sicily, Italy, she resided in Queens, N.Y., and West Palm Beach, Fla., prior to moving to Manalapan three years ago. She was a communicant of St. Thomas More Roman Catholic Church, Manalapan. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Ronald and Carol Platania of Manalapan; and three grandchildren. A funeral liturgy was offered at St. Thomas More. Entombment was at St. Rose of Lima Mausoleum, Freehold Township.
