SALVATORE "SILVIE" LICITRA, 83, of Howell died Feb. 4 at home. He was born in New York City, and lived in Brooklyn, N.Y., before moving to Howell in 1995. He was a master teacher and served the New York City Board of Education for 42 years, retiring in 1984. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in World War II. He served as board president of The Villages of Howell and worked with the community’s "Bridge the Age Gap" program in conjunction with Ardena School, Howell. He was an administrator of the Truck Frame and Axle Repair Association, an author of several books, an editor of magazines, and an international lecturer on topics such as management, motivational speaking and education. He received Howell’s Optimist Award in 2002. He was predeceased by his son, Philip, in 1987, and a brother, George, in 1945. Surviving are his wife, Rachael Licitra of Howell; three sons, George of Jackson, Joseph of Port Richey, Fla., and John of Franklin Lakes; a brother, Alfred of Las Vegas; a sister, Elvira DeMastro of Long Island, N.Y.; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
BEATRICE E. NICK, 89, of Freehold Township died Feb. 5 at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township. Born in Newark, she resided in Union before moving to Freehold Township 23 years ago. She worked as a department manager for W.T. Grant department store, Union, for 20 years, retiring in 1975. She was a communicant of St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church, Freehold, and a member of the Senior Citizens Activities Network (SCAN) at Monmouth Mall, Eatontown. She was predeceased by her husband, Julius, in 1979. Surviving are two daughters, Linda Schmidt of Springfield and Barbara Nick of Freehold Township; two brothers, Henry A. of Waymart, Pa., and Edward A., Lakehurst; and two grandchildren. A funeral liturgy was offered at St. Rose of Lima Church, followed by interment at Hollywood Memorial Park, Union.
LUCY SPAVENTA, 86, of Howell died Feb. 5 at Jersey Shore Medical Center, Neptune. She was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., before moving to Surrey Downs, Howell, nine years ago. She was a homemaker and a communicant of St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church, Farmingdale, and a member of AARP. She was predeceased by her husband, William, in 1994. Surviving are three sons, Nicholas of Valley Stream, Long Island, N.Y., Steven of Metuchen, William of Staten Island, N.Y.; a daughter, Jeanine Musto of Howell; and eight grandchildren. A funeral Mass was offered at St. Catherine of Siena Church, followed by interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Staten Island.
TURID M. HENRIKSEN, 70, of Jackson, died Feb. 6 at home. Born in Sandefjord, Norway, she lived in Keyport and the Morganville section of Marlboro before moving to Jackson three years ago. Along with her late husband, she owned and operated the Morganville Bar and Grill, Morganville, from 1967 to 1992. She was a former member of the Sons of Norway No. 226, Marlboro, and the Bayshore Tavern Owners Association. She was predeceased by her husband, Arne, in 1969. Surviving are two sons, Roy Henriksen of Sistersville, W. Va., and Thor Henriksen of Garner, N. C.; one daughter, Kim Cheesbrough of Jackson, one brother, Sverre Karlsen of Norway; and seven grandchildren. Funeral services were led by the Rev. Gary E. Costa, followed by a private interment. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice.
HENRY A. FIOLEK, 77, of South Amboy died Jan. 20 in Raritan Bay Medical Center, Old Bridge division. He worked for the South Amboy Board of Education as a crossing guard on Main Street and Stevens Avenue for 10 years. Surviving are his wife, Theresa Biancamano Fiolek; a son, Paul Fiolek of Freehold; and three grandchildren. A Mass was offered at St. Mary’s Church, South Amboy. Entombment followed in St. Mary’s Mausoleum, South Amboy.
MILLIE LAUDICINA, 87, of Howell, died Feb. 10 at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she lived in South River before moving to The Villages in Howell 10 years ago. She was a homemaker. She was predeceased by her first husband, Neil Napolitano, in 1969; her second husband, James Laudicina, in 1991; and a daughter, Teresa Olazagasti, in 1991. Surviving her are a son and daughter-in-law, Anthony and Patricia Napolitano of Freehold; a son-in-law, Dominick Olazagasti of South River; two grandchildren and five great grandchildren. A funeral mass was held at St. Robert Bellarmine Roman Catholic Church, Freehold Township, followed by interment in Old Tennent Cemetery, Tennent section of Manalapan.
ROY E. OLSEN JR., 70, of Lakewood, died Feb. 8 at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township. Born in Teaneck, he lived in Howell before moving to Lakewood five years ago. He was a graduate of Union Hill High School in 1951. He was a Navy veteran of the Korean War. He was a letter carrier for 32 years for the U.S. Post Office in Freehold before retiring in 1998. He was a member of the American Legion Post 54 of Freehold and the Tin Can Sailors. He is survived by four sons and three daughters-in-law, Wayne and Barbara of Brick, Gary of Jackson, Roy and Darlene of Toms River, and Chris and Jill of Freehold Township; and six grandchildren. Interment
was at Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Arneytown.
MARCELLINE C. GRADY, 70, of Hazlet died Feb. 9 at JFK Medical Center, Edison. Born in Newark, she resided in Irvington for 48 years prior to moving to Hazlet. She was a bookkeeper at New Hope Foundation, Marlboro, for 20 years, retiring in 2001. She was an active member, Eucharistic minister, and member of the arts and environment committee at St. Benedict’s Roman Catholic Church, Holmdel. She was also coordinator of the liturgy section of Oursillo Movement of the Diocese of Trenton. She is survived by three daughters, Diane Grady of Middletown, Susan Grady of Jackson, and Casey Grady of Freehold; her son-in-law, Jeffrey Surgent of Freehold; her brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Margaret Conroy of West Orange; her sister, Patricia Stuy of Middletown; two grandchildren; and one nephew. A funeral service will be Feb. 12 at 9 a.m. at Day Funeral Home, Keyport. A funeral liturgy will follow at 10 a.m. at St. Benedict’s Roman Catholic Church, Holmdel. Interment
will be at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Keyport.
RONALD K. STECK, 70, of Bunker Hill, W. Va., and formerly Middletown died Feb. 1 at home. Born in Jersey City, he resided in Middletown for 25 years prior to moving to Bunker Hill 10 years ago. He was a senior technical assistant at AT&T, Holmdel, for 39 years, retiring in 1989. He served with the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict. He was a member of King of Kings Lutheran Church, New Monmouth section of Middletown. He was predeceased by his wife, Jennie Williams Steck in 1988. He is survived by four daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Steven Silverstein of West Long Branch, Sharon and Ben Barresi of Little Silver, Jeanne and Chris Risafi of Freehold, and Diane and Jimmy McDonald of Middletown; his sister and brother, Carol Steck and Robert Steck, both of New Jersey; and nine grandchildren. Burial was at Washington Monumental Cemetery, South River.
THOMAS F. MURPHY JR., 77, of North Brunswick died Jan. 28 at home. Born in Medford, Mass., he resided in Hillsborough prior to moving to North Brunswick 48 years ago. He owned and operated Thorn’s Piano Tuning and Repair. He was also a manager at Pepsi Cola, North Brunswick and Ocean, for more than 30 years, retiring in 1988. He served with the U.S. Coast Guard. He was a communicant of St. Mary of Mount Virgin Roman Catholic Church, New Brunswick. An avid trumpet player, he and his wife Ann, an organist, played in the Pete Mundi Orchestra for 25 years. His memberships included the American Federation of Musicians Local No. 204, and the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks No. 324, both New Brunswick. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Ann Mundi Murphy of North Brunswick; two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Jane Murphy of Howell, and William and Susan Murphy of Hampton; his daughter, Judy Donnelly of North Brunswick; his sister and brother-in-law, Noreen and John Czahor of Clearwater, Fla.; seven grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at St. Mary of Mount Virgin Roman Catholic Church, New Brunswick. Burial was at St. Peter’s Cemetery, New Brunswick.
