CATHERINE J. "TOOTIE" AMATO, 69, of Pinellas Park, Fla., died Dec. 26 at home. She was born in Freehold, where she lived until moving to Florida in 1970. Mrs. Amato was employed by the Pinellas County school system in the food services department for 10 years before her retirement. She is survived by two sons, George Wournell of Freehold and Raymond Wournell of Ozark, Ala.; a daughter, Kathleen Anderson of Tampa, Fla.; four brothers, Raymond Frank of Toms River, and Ken Frank, Herb Frank and Harvey Frank, all of Freehold; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
JULIA MEDNICK, 89, of Manalapan died Dec. 25 at home. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she lived there most of her life before moving to Manalapan 26 years ago. Mrs. Mednick was a member of the Covered Bridge Association and the Covered Bridge Chapters of Hadassah, Deborah Hospital Foundation, and B’nai B’rith. She was predeceased by her husband, Harry Mednick; a daughter, Rochelle Gilbert; and a brother, Edward Fagan. Mrs. Mednick is survived by a son, Barry Mednick of Old Bridge; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
VIOLET W. DALIK, 86, of Englishtown died Dec. 14 at Montgomery Care Center, Freehold Township. Born in Monmouth County, she was a lifelong Englishtown resident. She was a communicant of Our Lady of Mercy Roman Catholic Church, Englishtown. A graduate of Freehold High School, she was also a member of the class reunion committee. She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph Paul Dalik Sr. in 1980; and a brother, Mitchell Deptula. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Richard J. and Sally Dalik of Freehold, and Joseph Paul and Kathy Dalik Jr. of Point Pleasant; her daughter, Lorraine V. Page of Hamilton Township; two sisters, Francis Kapish of the Millhurst section of Manalapan Township, and Olga Ulatowski of Englishtown; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Interment
was at St. Rose of Lima Cemetery, Freehold.
MATILDA CHESTER, 95, of Allentown died Jan. 2 at Princeton Medical Center. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she had lived in Amityville, N.Y., before moving to Allentown 25 years ago. Mrs. Chester was a member of the Allentown Presbyterian Church. She was predeceased by her husband, Dwight Horace Chester. Surviving are a son, Robert Chester Sr. of Amityville; a daughter, Dorothy Hock of Allentown; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the Allentown Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Dr. Stephen Heinzel-Nelson officiating. JOSEPHINE ROSE CHIUSANO, 77, of Millstone died Jan. 4 at Kingston Hospital, Kingston, N.Y., Born in Trenton, she had been a resident of Millstone for the past 51 years. Mrs. Chiusano was an inspector for Brockway Glass Co., Freehold, for 29 years, retiring 15 years ago. She was a communicant of St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, Perrineville section of Millstone. She was predeceased by a son, Joseph J., in 1970. Mrs. Chiusano is survived by her husband, Domenico "Nick" Chiusano; a daughter and son-in-law, Lucille and George Bussiere of Grand Gorge, N.Y.; a sister, Mary Morettoni of Trenton; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. The funeral liturgy was celebrated at St. Joseph’s Church, followed by interment in the parish cemetery. HARRIET M. LEVESQUE, 95, of Lakewood died Jan. 3 at home. Born in Gothburg, Sweden, she had lived in Millstone before moving to Lakewood 27 years ago. Mrs. Levesque was a homemaker and kennel owner. She was a communicant of St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, Perrineville section of Millstone. She was predeceased by her husband, Maurice Antonio Levesque, in 1972; and a son, Pierre Levesque, in 1942. She is survived by a daughter, Madeline E. Thompson of Howell; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. The funeral liturgy was celebrated at St. Joseph’s Church, followed by interment in the parish cemetery.
RICHARD PAUL THOMPSON, of the Port Monmouth section of Middletown, died Dec. 30 at Jersey Shore Medical Center, Neptune. Born in Newark, he resided in Union before moving to Port Monmouth 47 years ago. Mr. Thompson was employed at Jaejer Lumber Co., Madison, for 15 years, retiring in 1992. Prior to that, he was a foreman at Dairy Lee, Newark, for 40 years. Mr. Thompson is survived by his wife of 62 years, Bertha Paaz Thompson; a son, Richard Paul Thompson Jr. of East Stroudsburg, Pa.; two daughters, Lynn Halvorsen of Howell and Kathy Klein of the Clarksburg section of Millstone; a brother, Kenneth Thompson of Port Monmouth; two sisters, Violet Sohlgren of Florida and Marge Arnold of South Carolina; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Burial was at Graceland Memorial Park, Kernilworth.
JOHN EDWARD DUCKETT, 30, of Ashland City, Tenn., and formerly Freehold died Dec. 14 in Ashland City from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. He resided in Freehold and Florida prior to moving to Tennessee three years ago. He was a volunteer firefighter, and aspiring country western singer in Tennessee. Prior to that, he was a former member of the Freehold Township Independent Fire Company No. 1. He was a former member of the First Baptist Church, Freehold, and sang in its choirs since his childhood. He attended Freehold Township High School. He is survived by his parents, and maternal grandmother, Carolyn Smythe Duckett and John W. Duckett Jr., and Anna Stewart Smythe, all of Freehold Township. A memorial service was held at First Baptist Church, Freehold.
PHILIP RESTIVO, 80, of Howell Township died Dec. 14 at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., he resided in Staten Island, N.Y., prior to moving to Howell Township eight years ago. He was a tailor at Unite National Cotton, New York City, retiring 18 years ago. He served with the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. His activities included playing pool and painting. He is survived by his wife, Frances Avanzato Restivo of Howell Township; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Jerome and Mary Restivo of Freehold Township, and Vincent C. Restivo of Levittown, N.Y.; four sisters, Frances Restivo, Mary Restivo and Kate Pillera, all of Yorktown Heights, N.Y., and Anna Russo of Staten Island; and two grandchildren.
SYLVIA HIRSCH, 74, of Howell died Dec. 17 at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold. Mrs. Hirsch was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. and had lived there before moving to The Villages, Howell Township, 27 years ago. She was a secretary with the Monmouth County School District, Freehold Township, for five years, retiring in 1995. She was a member of the Women’s Club at The Villages. Surviving are her husband, Marvin Hirsch; two sons, Robert Ian Hirsch of Malakai, Hawaii, and Gary Alan Hirsch of Freehold; one brother, David Glaser of Levittown, N.Y.; three sisters, Ann Slitzan of Boca Raton, Fla., Pearl Tarasuck of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Joyce Schneider of Plainview, Long Island, N.Y. Services were held at Beth Israel Cemetery, Temple of Israel Mausoleum, Woodbridge, followed by entombment.
