LESTER ROGERS, 97, of Sea Bright died Jan. 14 at his son’s home in Long Branch. Born in Sea Bright, he resided there with his son and daughter-in-law for 35 years. Mr. Rogers was a self-employed commercial fisherman, retiring 17 years ago. He was a member of the Free and Accepted Masons. He was predeceased by his wife, Edna Reynolds Rogers, in 1973; a daughter, Edna Layton, in 1999; a son, Lester Rogers, in 2002; and two grandchildren. He is survived by two sons and three daughters-in-law, Robert and Maria Rogers of Long Branch, Thomas and Barbara Rogers of Wrightstown, and Barbara Rogers of the West Keansburg section of Hazlet; a son-in-law, Charles Layton of Highlands; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
ROBERT J. BATZ JR., 30, of the Belford section of Middletown, died Jan. 15 at home. Born in East Orange, he resided in Belleville prior to moving to Belford, where he resided most of his life. Mr. Batz was co-owner and operator with his father of Blaine Termite and Pest Control Co., Belford, for the past 10 years. He was a communicant of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, New Monmouth section of Middletown. He was a graduate of Brookdale Community College, Lincroft section of Middletown. His activities included volunteering at Middletown drug and alcohol counseling centers, and with St. Mary’s 2000 mission to Kenya, as well as writing poetry. He was predeceased by his grandfathers, Joseph Batz and David McNamara, and his grandmother, Mary McNamara. He is survived by his parents, Robert J. and Eileen McNamara Batz Sr., his sister, Cynthia Batz, and his paternal grandmother, Anna Batz, all of Belford; and one niece. A funeral liturgy was offered at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, New Monmouth. Entombment was at Fair View Mausoleum, Middletown.
THOMAS BUBAN, 73, of the Port Monmouth section of Middletown, died Jan. 16 at home. Born in Bayonne, he resided in Port Monmouth the past 50 years. Mr. Buban was a fisherman at Belford Co-op for 40 years, retiring in 1993. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Cheryl Buban of Atlantic Highlands; and his granddaughter, Michelle Scherck of Middletown.
EDWARD KACSUR, 89, of Hazlet died Dec. 31 at Bayshore Community Hospital, Holmdel. Born in Bayonne, he resided there until moving to Hazlet 45 years ago. Mr. Kacsur was an electrical technician at Western Electric, Newark, for 25 years, retiring in 1978. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, John and Harriet Kacsur of San Antonio; a sister and brother-in-law, Margaret and Michael Weeks of Hazlet; five nieces; four nephews; and several grandnieces and -nephews. Interment
took place at Fair View Cemetery, Middletown.
LORRAINE J. CANOVA MERWIN, 68, of Middletown died Dec. 31 at home. Born in Union City, she resided there until moving to Middletown 27 years ago. Mrs. Merwin was predeceased by her husband, George Merwin, in 1978. She is survived by two daughters and one son-in-law, Lorrie Jan Richardson, and Lorraine and Brad Del Verde, all of Middletown; and a brother, Gregory Canova of Greene, N.Y. Burial was at Bay View Cemetery, Leonardo section of Middletown.
JOHN F. GEIGER, 23, of the Belford section of Middletown died Jan. 12 at home. Born in Red Bank, he was a lifelong resident of Belford. He was predeceased by two sisters, Cheryl Lynn Geiger and Michelle Geiger. He is survived by his parents, Charles and Nancy Sepcik Geiger of Belford. A funeral service will be held Jan. 15 at 8:30 p.m. at John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, Middletown.
CHARLES J. RAJNER, 59, of the Port Monmouth section of Middletown, died Jan. 13 at home. Born in Tarnopol, Poland, he moved to the United States in 1949. He lived in New York City, Brooklyn, and Queens, N.Y., before moving to Port Monmouth in 1984. He was a retired cable splicer for Verizon, Brooklyn, for 30 years. He served with the U.S. Army during the Vietnam era. He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. He was predeceased by his parents, Emanuel and Karolina Rajner; a brother, Benny Reiner, in 1997; and two sisters, Janka Gorski and Sr. Mary Rajner, both in 1998. He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Marilyn Clark Rajner of Port Monmouth; two sons, Brandon Rajner of Little Silver, and Christopher Rajner of Port Monmouth; a daughter, Melanie Rajner of Parlin; four brothers, Edmond Rajner of Bainbridge, N.Y.; Richard Rajner of Glenn View, Ill.; John Rajner of Theresa, N.Y.; and Alex Rajner of Dumont; and a sister, Sarah Kaban of Central Islip, N.Y. Visitation will be Jan. 15 from 7-9 p.m., and Jan. 16 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, Middletown. A funeral gathering will be held Jan. 17 at 9:30 a.m. at the funeral home. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, New Monmouth section of Middletown. THOMAS G. THOMPSON, 53, of Pompano Beach, Fla., died Dec. 28 at home following a short illness. Born in Newark, he resided in the Elberon section of Long Branch before moving to Florida 10 years ago. He was employed at The Florida State Department of Agriculture. Prior to that, he worked at Lucent Technologies. He was a graduate of Long Branch High School, and Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, and the University of Florida, Gainesville. He was predeceased by his mother, Matilda Thompson, in 1974; and his father, Thomas Thompson, in 1990. He is survived by his brother, Richard Thompson of Los Angeles; three sisters, Donna Thompson of Elberon, Gail Thompson of the Oakhurst section of Ocean Township, and Jeane Oliver of the Leonardo section of Middletown; a brother-in-law, William Oliver Jr.; a sister-in-law, Barbara Thompson; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held Jan. 24 at 12:30 p.m. at Stella Maris Retreat, Elberon. Memorial donations may be made to the American Lung Association, 1600 Route 22, Union 07083.
ETHEL WELDON, 63, of the Cliffwood Beach section of Aberdeen, died Jan. 11 at Bayshore Community Hospital, Holmdel. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she resided there until moving to Cliffwood Beach 43 years ago. Mrs. Weldon was a cafeteria leader for the Cliffwood School System for 15 years, retiring in 1990. She was a communicant and Eucharistic minister of St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, Keyport. She was a life member of both the Aberdeen-Matawan First Aid Ladies Auxiliary and the Cliffwood Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary, and a member of both the St. Clement’s and Aberdeen Township seniors clubs. She was predeceased by two sisters, Anna Hallock and Marie Finley, and a brother, Edward Hallock. Mrs. Weldon is survived by her husband, Thomas Weldon of Cliffwood Beach; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Thomas J. Weldon of Elizabeth, and Timothy and Sandra Weldon of Old Bridge; a daughter and son-in-law, Regina and Gerald Allocco of Holmdel; three brothers, James Hallock and George Hallock, both of California, and Michael Hallock of New Mexico; a sister, Delia Rush of New York; and five grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Jan. 15 at 9:15 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, followed by interment in the parish cemetery.
CONCESA GONZALEZ, 85, of West New York died Dec. 23 at Bayshore Community Hospital, Holmdel. Born in Puerto Rico, she had been a resident of West New York for the past 18 years. Mrs. Gonzalez was a communicant of Our Lady of Fatima Church and a member of the Golden Age Club, both North Bergen. She was predeceased by her husband, Juan Gonzalez, in 1979. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Claudio and Lillian Gonzalez of Manalapan; a daughter and son-in-law, Cathy and Mark Wolferman of Hazlet; two sisters, Gladys DeJesus and Ana Rivera; two brothers, Edwin DeJesus and Edward DeJesus; and five granddaughters. Interment
was in Puerto Rico National Cemetery, Bayamon, Puerto Rico.
