DOROTHY M. WOOD POLING, 87, of Keyport died Dec. 16 at Bayshore Health Care Center, Holmdel. She was born in New York City. She was a homemaker, and member of the Keyport Seniors. She is survived by her husband of 70 years, Robert A. Poling of Keyport; two sons and daughters-in-law, Richard A. and Theresa Poling of Keyport, and Thomas W. and Grace Poling of Florida; her sister, Margaret Sheldon of Florida; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Interment
was at Shoreland Memorial Gardens, Hazlet.
ANN P. PAGLIA CANORE, 82, of Middletown died Dec. 17 at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she resided there until moving to Middletown eight years ago. Mrs. Canore was a teacher at Fonte Bonne Hall Academy, Brooklyn, for 18 years, retiring in 1985. She was a communicant of St. Anthony of Padua Roman Catholic Church, Red Bank. She was predeceased by a grandson, James Dwyer, in 1996. She is survived by her husband of 46 years, Frank Canore of Middletown; her daughter and son-in-law, Roseanne and Chris Johnson of Middletown; her son and daughter-in-law, David and Victoria Canore of Garden City; her sister, Sister Anita Rosaire of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and four grandchildren. A funeral liturgy was offered at St. Anthony of Padua Church, followed by burial in Fairview Cemetery, Middletown. JOSEPHINE WINNICKI HALMO, 85, of Holmdel died Dec. 17 at home. Born in Newark, she resided there and in Maplewood and South Orange prior to moving to Holmdel in 1975. She received her degree in registered nursing at as well as the Florence Nightingale Perfect Attendance Award at Newark City Hospital Nursing School at Martland Medical Center, Newark. She prided herself on the fact that she completed high school with her son and daughter. Her activities included serving as secretary for the Widows and Widowers Club of Monmouth County, a Brownie Troop Leader in Maplewood, and dancing. She was predeceased by her husband, Emil M. Halmo in 1973. She is survived by her daughter, Martha of Watchung; her son, Martin of Altoona, Pa.; four sisters, Stella Duda and Wanda Solosy of Mountainside, Anna Lombardi of Berkeley Heights, and Helen Drwal of Sayreville; her brother, Anthony Winnicki of Mountainside; and two grandchildren. DORIS H. DINGWELL SCHMIDT, 74, of the Belford section of Middletown, died Dec. 17 at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. Born in Newark, she resided in the Middletown area for the past 50 years. She and her husband owned a local electronics business for more than 30 years. She was predeceased by her husband, Michael Schmidt, in 1990; and her sister, Mary Sinilnikoff. She is survived by her son, Michael Schmidt of Little Silver; two grandchildren; and her niece and nephew. MARGARET TRODD HOYES, 81, of Middletown died Dec. 18 at St. Joseph’s Home for the Blind, Jersey City. Born in Jersey City, she had resided there, and in Tinton Falls, Matawan, and several other towns before moving to Middletown. Mrs. Hoyes was a clerical worker for the Internal Revenue Service, Newark, for several years, retiring 30 years ago. She was a volunteer and Eucharistic Minister at Jersey Shore Medical Center and the Medicenter, both Neptune; and a member of the Upper Room Spiritual Center. She is survived by several nieces and nephews. A funeral liturgy was offered at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, New Monmouth section of Middletown. Burial was at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington.
VICTORIA L. SAVITSKY-PREPUTNIK, 92, of the Cliffwood section of Aberdeen, died Dec. 18 at Bayshore Community Hospital, Holmdel. Born in Keyport, she was a lifelong resident of Cliffwood. She was a registered nurse at Perth Amboy General Hospital for more than 50 years, and was known as the "Florence Nightingale of Cliffwood." Prior to that, she worked at the Savitsky family farm, Cliffwood; and at DuPont, Linden. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Altar Rosary Society, Keyport; and the Senior Citizens of Cliffwood. She was predeceased by her husband, Michael Preputnik, in 1975; and a stepson, Edward Preputnik. She is survived by her stepson, Michael Preputnik of South Carolina; her niece and nephew, Valerie Savitsky and Donald Lytkowski, both of Cliffwood; one granddaughter; and several other nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at St. Joseph’s Church, followed by interment at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Keyport.
CATHERINE MANNING, 90, of Keyport died Dec. 20 at Victoria Health Care, Matawan. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she resided there prior to moving to Keyport 17 years ago. She was a secretary at Maimonidies Hospital, Brooklyn, for 20 years, retiring in 1975. She received the Gold Star Mother Award from the U.S. Department of Defense for the death of her son in Vietnam. She was predeceased by her husband, James Manning in 1962; and a son, Robert Manning in 1969 in Vietnam. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Marion Manning of Hazlet; her daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen and Al Stanavitch of Old Bridge; four grandchildren; and one great granddaughter. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at Holy Family Roman Catholic Church, Union Beach. Interment
was at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Keyport.
MAURA CONWAY-AMERY, 57, of Holmdel died Dec. 22 at home after a battle with cancer. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she resided there and in Aberdeen, and Miami, Fla., prior to moving to Holmdel 17 years ago. She was a homemaker and enjoyed time with her family. She was a communicant and member of the St. Vincent DePaul Society at St. Catharine’s Roman Catholic Church, Holmdel. She received the Golden Key Award from St. John’s University, Jamaica, N.Y., for attaining the highest grade point average in her major, American studies. She was predeceased by her parents, Patrick J. Conway of County Clare, Ireland, and Mary C. McRory of County Donegal, Ireland. She is survived by her husband, Sean Amery of Holmdel; three daughters, Jane Mary Amery of Shrewsbury, Elizabeth Anne Amery of New York City, and Margaret Maura Amery of Holmdel; her sister and brother-in-law, Anne and Jim Creech of Raleigh, N.C.; her mother-in-law, Jeannette F. Amery of Holmdel; and several nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at St. Catharine’s Roman Catholic Church, Holmdel. Interment

VINCENT J. MAZZEO, 75, of Highlands died Dec. 14 at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. Born in Jersey City, he resided in Barnegat and in Middletown for 26 years before moving to Highlands three years ago. Mr. Mazzeo was an usher at Monmouth Park Racetrack, Oceanport, since 1988. Prior to that, he owned and operated Harry’s Luncheonette, Long Branch, for 20 years, retiring in 1988. He served with the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a communicant of St. Catherine’s Roman Catholic Church, New Monmouth section of Middletown. His activities included volunteering at the food pantry, Barnegat, for the past 10 years. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Rosemary Bevacqua Mazzeo; his son, Vincent J. Mazzeo Jr. of Manasquan; two daughters and sons-in-law, Judith M. and David Zacchi of Manasquan, and Lisa I. and Michael Aldorasi of the Belford section of Middletown; his sister, Josephine Zoppi of Long Branch; two brothers, Patrick Mazzeo of Toms River and Ralph Mazzeo of Old Bridge; and four grandchildren. Visitation will be Dec. 18 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, Middletown. A funeral liturgy will be offered Dec. 19 at St. Catherine’s Roman Catholic Church, New Monmouth (time to be announced). Burial will follow at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Middletown.
DANIEL H. ROAKE, 88, of Middletown died Dec. 15 at home. Born in Staten Island, N.Y., he lived in Tucson, Ariz., before moving to Middletown two years ago. Mr. Roake was a mail clerk at Esterbrook Corp., New York City, for 20 years, retiring in 1978. He was a communicant of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, New Monmouth section of Middletown. He was predeceased by his wife, Marion Roake, in 2000. He is survived by four daughters and sons-in-law, Ann and Paul Marsh of Long Island, N.Y.; Claire and Aldo Morandi of Staten Island, N.Y.; Ellen and Ralph Farr of Yuma, Ariz.; and Rita and John Stapleton of Middletown; his son, John Roake of Green Bay, Wis.; and 10 grandchildren. Visitation will be held Dec. 18 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-8:30 p.m. at John F. Pfleger Funeral Home. A funeral gathering will follow at 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
