FRANCES SALERNO, 74, of Marlboro, died Nov. 29 at home. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she moved to Marlboro 12 years ago. Mrs. Salerno was a communicant of St. Gabriel’s Roman Catholic Church, Marlboro. She is survived by her husband, Emanuel; a son and daughter-in-law, Louis and Lois Salerno of Holmdel; a daughter and son-in-law, Nina and Joseph Malanka of Manalapan; two sisters, Mary Vespia of Brooklyn and Josephine Cantelli of Valley Stream, N.Y.; and three grandchildren. The funeral liturgy was celebrated at St. Gabriel’s Church, followed by entombment in St. Gabriel’s Mausoleum, Marlboro.
VERA McGROGAN, 76, of Union Beach died Dec. 10 at Deborah Heart and Lung Hospital, Browns Mills. Born in Hoboken, she resided there until moving to Union Beach 58 years ago. Mrs. McGrogan was a seamstress at Kavlon, Wall Township, retiring in 1991. From 1964 to 1985, she was the owner and operator of McGrogan & Sons Exxon, Union Beach. Mrs. McGrogan was predeceased by her husband, James J. McGrogan Sr., in 1985; and her infant daughter, Jean McGrogan, in 1958. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, James J. and Kathy McGrogan Jr., and Sal and Judy McGrogan, all Union Beach; her daughter and son-in-law, Jean and Michael Glassford of Keansburg; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Agnes Gallopo of Union Beach, and Mary and Don Shank of Bradenton, Fla.; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, the Rev. Salvatore Livigni of Baltimore, Michael and Ilene Livigni of Port St. Lucie, Fla., and Rocco and Beatrice Morea of Freehold; four grandchildren; 12 nieces and nephews; and several brothers- and sisters-in-law. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at Holy Family Roman Catholic Church, Union Beach. Burial was at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Keyport. DOUGLAS R. VANDERBILT, 81, of Middletown died Dec. 3 at home. He was devoted to his family and friends. He was predeceased by his wife, Mary Forsyth. He is survived by his children Christine, Kim, Douglas, Kip, Lori, Chad, Peter and Bob Vanderbilt; his daughters-in-law, Julie and Gail; one son-in-law, Tony; and four grandchildren. A funeral liturgy was offered at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, Colts Neck.
CATHERINE S. McCORMACK, 67, of Whiting died Dec. 11 at Community Medical Center, Toms River. Born in Newark, she resided in Keansburg before moving to Whiting 2 years ago. Mrs. McCormack was a custodian for the Middletown Board of Education for 12 years, retiring in 1999. Prior to that, she worked at the A&P, Cliffwood section of Aberdeen, and at S.S. White, Holmdel. Her activities included traveling to Atlantic City, and she was an avid bingo player. She is survived by her husband, John McCormack of Whiting; three daughters, Linda Reinhold of the Cliffwood Beach section of Aberdeen, Janet Hynes of Keansburg, and Kelly Ann Farrer of Union Beach; two stepdaughters, Gabrielle Black of Union Beach and Karen Scesney of Fords; four sisters, Agnes Garrigal of Belmar, Dorothy Woodworth of Virginia, Gertrude Kriete of Middletown, and Mildred Foley of Whiting; and 14 grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, Keyport.
CONSTANCE "CONNIE" C. DAVERIO, 76, of the Lincroft section of Middletown died Dec. 13 at Care One at Holmdel. Born in St. Paul, Minn., she resided in Minnesota prior to moving to the East Coast in 1945. She, her husband and his family managed the Lincroft Inn until moving to Arizona in 1984, and returned to Lincroft this year. Prior to that, she was employed in a government program at Bell Labs. She was predeceased by her former husband, Robert Daverio. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Terry and Martha Daverio of Lincroft, and John and Marie Daverio of Bradenton, Fla.; two sisters, Nancy Schuler of Lake Placid, Fla., and Mary Roberson of Saltillo, Miss.; and two grandchildren. HARRY E. KOTOFF, 79, of Old Bridge died Oct. 30 in Old Bridge Manor. Surviving are his wife, Isabel Sorando Kotoff; a son, William of Old Bridge; two daughters, Carol Frenkian of Old Bridge and Kristine Kotoff of Freehold; a brother, Alex of the Leonardo section of Middletown; a sister, Theresa Criscola of Jackson Heights, N.Y.; and six grandchildren. A Mass was offered at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, Old Bridge. Interment
was in Brig. Gen. William C. Doyle Cemetery, Arnytown section of North Hanover.
ANTHONY F. KOVALSKY, 65, of Middletown died Dec. 12 at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. Born in Perth Amboy, he resided in Woodbridge before moving to Middletown 22 years ago. Mr. Kovalsky was a security person at Lockheed-Martin, Plainfield, for 17 years, retiring in 1992. He served with the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a communicant of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, New Monmouth section of Middletown. He was a past Golden Gloves winner for the Police Athletic League in Queens, N.Y. He enjoyed spending time with his family. He was predeceased by a granddaughter, Helen Theresa Burnett. He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Deborah M. Gilson Kovalsky; his son and daughter-in-law, Anthony F. and Irene Kovalsky Jr. of Woodbridge; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Kelly-Ann and James Murray of Lynbrook, N.Y., Tara-Ann and William Burnett of Highlands, and Colleen-Ann Rogers of Middletown; and two grandchildren. A funeral liturgy was offered at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, New Monmouth, followed by burial at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Middletown.
ARTHUR J. MERKEL, 82, of Stuart, Fla., died Dec. 7 at Martin Memorial Medical Center North, Stuart. Born in New York City, he had resided in the Belford section of Middletown for 54 years before moving to Stuart one year ago. Mr. Merkel was a mutuel clerk at Monmouth Park Racetrack, Oceanport, for 19 years. Prior to that, he was a program analyst for the Signal Corps at Fort Monmouth, for 29 years. He served as a Master Sergeant in the U.S. Army. He was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans. His activities included time with his family, and playing cards. He is survived by his wife, Mary A. Merkel; two sons and daughters-in-law, Arthur J. and Susan Merkel Jr. of the Oakhurst section of Ocean Township, and Lt. Matthew A. and MaryAnn Merkel of Long Branch; two daughters and one son-in-law, Evelyn A. Merkel of Bridgewater Township, and Dorothy J. Merkel-Murphy and David Murphy of Red Bank; two grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren. DAVID J. WALKER, 41, of Little Silver died Aug. 18 at home. Born in Red Bank, he lived in Rumson and Shrewsbury prior to moving to Little Silver eight years ago. He was a real estate appraiser. His memberships included the Red Bank Elks, Monmouth County Realtor Association, and Appraisal Institute - National Organization. He enjoyed soccer and coached at various schools and Ocean Township Recreation and served as referee for the Monmouth County District. He was a graduate of Red Bank High School and Elmira College, New York. He was predeceased by a nephew, Kenneth L. Walker IV. He is survived by his parents, Lorraine and Kenneth L. Walker Jr. of Little Silver; his grandmother, Frances P. Walker of Hazlet; his brother, Kenneth L. and Michele Walker III of Brielle; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Kathleen and Alan Shatto of Okeechobee, Fla.; Suzanne and Stephen Barberio of Birmingham, Ala.; and Cindy and Robert Bumsted of Exeter, N.H.; five nephews; and four nieces. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Aug. 22 at 10 a.m. at St. James Roman Catholic Church, Red Bank.
CHARLES W. DAALDER, 84, of Middletown died Aug. 16 at New York University Medical Center, New York City. Born in Bayport, N.Y., he resided in Rego Park, N.Y., prior to moving to Middletown 20 years ago. Mr. Daalder was an engineer at New York Telephone Co., New York City, for 37 years, retiring in 1981. He served with the U.S. Marines during World War II, attaining the rank of staff sergeant. He was a member of the New York Telephone Pioneers of America, and the Knights of Columbus Mother Cabrini Council, Middle Village, N.Y. He served as a leader of Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Explorers, in Queens, N.Y. He was predeceased by his wife, Mary J. Malloy Daalder, in 2002. He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Charles J. and Mary Daalder of Tinton Falls; two daughters and one son-in-law, Lorraine M. and Patrick Connolly of the Lincroft section of Middletown, and Mary Ellen Daalder of Middletown; and four grandchildren. The funeral liturgy was offered at St. Leo the Great Roman Catholic Church, Lincroft, followed by burial at Brig. Gen. William C. Doyle Veterans Cemetery, Arnytown.
