Frances L. Adario DeNardo

Mrs. DeNardo, 90, of Matawan died Oct. 25 at Victoria House Health Care Center, Matawan. Born in Portland, Maine, she resided in the Cliffwood section of Aberdeen before moving to Matawan six years ago. Mrs. DeNardo was a homemaker. She was a communicant of St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, Keyport. She was predeceased by her husband, Michael DeNardo, in 1997; a sister, Sabby Tyska, this year; and a brother, Domenick Adario, in 1993. She is survived by a son, Fred DeNardo of Matawan; a daughter, Connie DeNardo Guarnieri of Matawan; three sisters, Mary Wallace and Yola Caraccilo, both of Cliffwood, and Anna Zduniak of the Wickatunk section of Marlboro; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at St. Joseph’s Church, followed by entombment at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Keyport.

Patricia Curialle

Mrs. Curialle, 35, of Freehold died Oct. 5 at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township. Born in Louisiana, she resided in Manalapan before moving to Freehold in 1978. Until 2002, she was employed as a deputy tax assessor for the township of Manalapan. She was a member of the Kaos team of the Freehold Area women’s softball league. She was also a member of St. Rose of Lima Church, Freehold. She was predeceased by her mother, Shirley McCawley. Surviving are her husband, Michael; two sons, Michael J. Jr. and Dylan J., at home; her father, Thomas A. McCawley of Howell; five brothers and three sisters-in-law, Michael and Noel McCawley of Florida, Timothy and Valerie McCawley of Middletown, Matthew and Suzanne McCawley of Jackson, and John and Thomas McCawley, both of Matawan; two sisters and two brothers-in-law, Kathleen and John Lockwood of Millstone and Susan and Gerry Henderson of Manalapan; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at St. Thomas More Roman Catholic Church, Manalapan. Cremation was private, with Freeman Funeral Home, Manalapan, in charge of arrangements. Memorial donations may be made to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, 447 Springfield Ave., Summit 07901.

John W. Petrella Jr.

John W. Petrella Jr., 16, of the Perrineville section of Millstone, died Oct. 17. Born in New Brunswick, he lived in Perrineville all of his life and had attended Allentown High School. He was predeceased by his maternal grandfather, John Kohler. Surviving are his parents, Shirley and John Sr.; two sisters, Corinne Marie and Brittany Lynne, both at home; his maternal grandmother, Shirley Kohler of Elba, Ala.; his paternal grandparents, Joan and John Petrella of Baldwinsville, N.Y.; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. A funeral service was held at the Freeman Manalapan-Marlboro Funeral Home, Manalapan. Memorial donations may be made to the John W. Petrella Jr. Scholarship Fund for Struggling Students, c/o PNC Bank, 591 Route 33 and Millstone Road, Englishtown 07726.

Charles R. Wilms

Mr. Wilms, 76, of Southampton Township died Oct. 8 at Virtua Memorial Hospital, Mount Holly. Born in Orange, he had lived in Freehold for more than 20 years before moving to Southampton five years ago. During World War II, he had served in the U.S. Merchant Marine Service. Before his retirement, he was a stationary fireman for the Coca-Cola Co. and the C.E. Loomis Co. and was also employed by Main Ship, Marlboro. He was a member of the Leisuretowne watch program and the Pinelands Young at Heart club. Surviving are his wife, Ruth Gardner Wilms; a daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth and Ken Klotzbach of Southampton; a brother and sister-in-law, Donald and Maria Wilms of South Orange; a granddaughter; 11 nieces and nephews; and many grandnieces and grandnephews. Funeral services were held at Higgins Memorial Home, Freehold. Interment followed at Maplewood Cemetery, Freehold Township.Jon S. Sem

Mr. Sem, 70, of Howell, died Sept. 25 at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township. Born in the Tottenville section of Staten Island, N.Y., he had also lived in the Eltonville section, as well as in Brooklyn, N.Y., Old Bridge, and Los Lunas, N.M., before moving to Howell in May, 2003. A 1951 graduate of Tottenville High School, he studied mechanical engineering at Cooper Union in New York and was a member of the model Railroaders Club. Until his retirement in 1997, Mr. Sem was a mechanical engineer for Foster-Wheeler, Livingston, where he worked on the Colony Shale Oil project, the Baytown Refinery, the Hydro­gen Plant Expansion for Tosco in California and Bayway Refinery in Linden. He was pre­deceased by his wife, Margarette Samuel Sem, who died in 2001. Surviving are one daughter, Karen Sem of Bedford, Texas; one stepdaugh­ter, Lisa C. Gibbs of Howell, with whom he had lived; and three sisters and one brother-in-law, Anne Marie and Steven Doolos of Ten­nessee, and Ellen Ahlin and Barbara Trabosci, both of Staten Island, N.Y. The funeral service was held at the C.H.T. Clayton & Son Funeral Home, Adelphia, with the Rev. Thomas J. O’­Connor officiating. Interment followed at San Clemente Catholic Cemetery in Los Lunas, N.M.

Roy Francis Merkel Jr.

Mr. Merkel, 51, of Manalapan died Oct. 4 at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township. Born in Queens, N.Y., he moved to Manalapan 18 years ago. He was a communi­cant of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Colts Neck. A 1974 alumnus of John Jay Col­lege of Criminal Justice, New York City, Mr. Merkel was an assistant deputy chief court of­ficer for the New York State Unified Court System. He was a one-star chief and a member of the New York State Supreme Court Officers Association. An avid collector of antique and vintage cars and trucks, he was a founding member of the No Dice Cruisers car club, for which he planned and staged several car shows to benefit charities. Surviving are his wife, Nancy; a daughter, Elizabeth Merkel of Manalapan; his mother, Amy Merkel of Queens, N.Y.; and many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. A funeral liturgy was offered at St. Mary’s Church, followed by interment at Old Tennent Cemetery, Tennent section of Manalapan. Memorial donations may be made to St. Mary’s Building Fund, Route 34 and Phalanx Road, Colts Neck 07722.

Marieta L. Rogers

Mrs. Rogers, 98, of Pawleys Island, S.C., died Oct. 10 at Waccamaw Community Hospital, Georgetown, S.C. Born in Marlboro, she was raised in Farmingdale and lived in Freehold for more than 50 years before moving to Gilford, N.H., then settling in South Carolina in 1995. Mrs. Rogers attended Rutgers University, New Brunswick, and for many years was a secretary in the guidance department for the Freehold Regional School District. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and belonged to its Tender Loving Care group. She was predeceased by her husband, William L. Rogers, in 1971, and by her six siblings. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Donna and David Scott of Pawleys Island; and three grandchildren. A funeral service was held at the C.H.T. Clayton & Son Funeral Home, Adelphia section of Howell, followed by interment at Maplewood Cemetery, Freehold Township. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Myrtle Beach, 1300 N. Kings Highway, Myrtle Beach, SC 29577.Robert E. Hugo Sr.

Mr. Hugo, 62, of Howell died Oct. 16 at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Nep­tune. Born and raised in East Rutherford, he had lived in Dumont and Elmwood Park before moving to Howell in 1967. A U.S. Army vet­eran, he was a project manager for P. Germi­nario, Paterson, for 40 years until his retire­ment in 2003. He was a former chief and life member of Howell’s Freewood Acres Fire Co., and for many years was also a coach in the North Howell Little League. He was prede­ceased by his father, Henry. Surviving are his wife of 43 years, Eleanora R. Hugo; his mother, Gladys Hugo of East Rutherford; five sons and daughters-in-law, Robert E. and Lisa Hugo Jr. of Little Egg Harbor, Dale Hugo and Lisa Ann Homack of Howell, David and JoAnn Hugo of Jackson, Brian and Tracy Hugo of Toms River, and Victor and Kathy Simon of Maryland; a daughter and her fiancé, Michele Hugo and John Barrett of Manchester; three brothers, Henry Hugo of Florida, Fredrick Hugo of Carlstadt and Kenneth Hugo of East Rutherford; four sisters, Lorraine Hugo, also of East Rutherford, Gladys Schostage of Mary­land, and Joanne Eckert and Janet Ruyman, both of Carlstadt; and a sister-in-law, Barbara Macaluso of Elmwood Park. A funeral service was held at the C.H.T. Clayton & Son Funeral Home, Adelphia section of Howell, followed by interment at Brig. Gen. William C. Doyle Vet­erans Cemetery, Arnytown. Thelma M. Lashley

Mrs. Lashley, 80, of Howell died Oct. 15 at home. Born in Howell, she was a lifelong resi­dent of the Maxim section and a lifetime mem­ber of the Pierce Memorial Presbyterian Church in Farmingdale. For more than 30 years, she worked at the original Connie’s, a restaurant in Farmingdale. She then worked in Farmingdale as a dental assistant for her son-in-law, Dr. Byron Marriner. She was pre­deceased by her husband, William H. Lashley, in 2001, her parents, Ella Clayton and Walter Ostrander, and a brother, Warren Ostrander, in 1926. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, William H. (Jr.) and Barbara Lashley of Jackson; a daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Dr. Byron Marriner of Manasquan; two brothers, Charles Ostrander of Jupiter, Fla., and George Ostrander of Howell; a sister and brother-in-law, Lavina and Franklin Ellis of Farmingdale; a grandson; and a great-grand­son. A funeral service was held at the C.H.T. Clayton & Son Funeral Home, with the Rev. Harvey Kelley officiating. Interment followed at Evergreen Cemetery, Farmingdale.
