Frances Lisowsky
Mrs. Lisowsky, 91, of Shrewsbury, died Aug. 16 at home. She was born in Flushing, N.Y. She was a longtime member of the Rosary Altar Society at St. James Roman Catholic Church, Red Bank. Mrs. Lisowsky was predeceased by her husband of 64 years, Michael P. Lisowsky, in February; and a son, Robert, in April. She is survived by five sons, Michael P. Lisowsky III of Santee, Calif., Frank J. Lisowsky of Shrewsbury, James M. Lisowsky of Texas, William Lisowsky of Cadiz, Ky., and Richard Lisowsky of Chapel Hill, N.C.; two daughters, Marjorie O'Brien of Austin, Texas, and Mary Anne Hirsch of Lititz, Pa.; 21 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. Gloria Riccardi Filippone
Mrs. Filippone, of Oceanport, died Sept. 4 at home. Born in Newark, she was a lifelong resident of the Shore area. She was employed in the administrative department at Monmouth University from 1983 until her retirement in 1996, and was also an assistant physical education professor at Monmouth College from 1965 to 1973. Afterward, Mrs. Filippone was the first director of the Monmouth County Office on Aging, establishing and directing the Special Citizens Area Transportation (SCAT) program. She was a parishioner of the Church of the Precious Blood, Monmouth Beach. She served two terms as Oceanport Borough Council president and was an honorary member of the Oceanport First Aid Squad. She received the County Achievement Award from the National Association of Counties in 1979. Mrs. Filippone was predeceased by her husband, Frederick James Filippone, in 1965. She is survived by two sons, Frederick James Filippone Jr. and Gary Filippone, both of Oceanport; two daughters and a son-in-law, Amery and Karl Meibauer, and Gay Steinbrick, all of Oceanport; a brother, Rudolph Riccardi; and seven grandchildren. A funeral service will be held Sept. 8 at 9 a.m. at Damiano Funeral Home, Long Branch. A Mass of Christian Burial
will follow at 10 a.m. at the Church of The Precious Blood. Interment

Joseph J. "Zeppy" Feiter
Mr. Feiter, 91, died Aug. 16 at the Arnold Walter Nursing Home, Holmdel. Mr. Feiter was a longtime resident of the Passaic, Clifton, areas before moving to The Sycamore in Shrewsbury. He was a foreman for the Clifton Recreation Department, retiring in 1979 after many years of service. He was a parishioner of St. Philip the Apostle Parish, Clifton. Mr. Feiter was pre by his wife, Josephine Dabal Feiter. He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Joseph and Barbara of Long Branch, and John and Marie of Oceanport; a daughter, Diane Dowds of Highlands; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. A Mass was celebrated at St. Philip the Apostle Church, followed by interment at St. Michael's Cemetery, South Hackensack. Memorial donations can be made in Joseph's memory to a charity of your choice.
Charles Hendrick Whelan
Mr. Whelan, 54, of Little Silver, died July 16 at home. Born in Long Branch, he was a lifelong resident of Little Silver. He owned a private family chiropractic practice in Little Silver, for 20 years. He was a communicant of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Colts Neck. Mr. Whelan was a member of the Garden State Chiropractic Society and the Monmouth/Ocean County Chiropractic Society. He was founder and past president of the Jersey Shore Running Club, and took part in several marathons, triathlons and biathlons. He was predeceased by his father, Samuel Whelan. He is survived by his mother, Sylvia VanCleef Whelan of Little Silver; his former wife, Therese Gourde Whelan of the Wanamassa section of Ocean Township; his children, Matthew and Emily Whelan of Wanamassa; his stepchildren, Christina and James Sheehan of Colts Neck; a brother and sister-in-law, Michael S. and Connie Whelan of Ambler, Pa.; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Carol Whelan of Little Silver, and Eileen and Pasquale Torchia of Oceanport; two nieces; and two nephews. Margarita G. Moran Pelayo
Mrs. Pelayo, 82, of Hazlet, died July 6 at home. She was born in Havana, Cuba. She was a pharmacist at International Flavors & Fragrances, Hazlet, for 30 years, retiring in 1988. Mrs. Pelayo was a communicant of Jesus the Lord Roman Catholic Church, Keyport. She was predeceased by her husband, Luis P. Pelayo; and a brother, Jorge Moran. Gerard Joseph Distefano Sr.
Mr. Distefano, 84, of Neptune City, died July 30 at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. Born in Jersey City, he resided in Rumson before moving to Neptune City nine years ago. He was a police lieutenant with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, retiring in 1979. He was also employed at Engelhard Corp, Iselin. He served with the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II and the Korean War, and received the American, Asiatic, America Victory and the Presidential Unit Citation medals. He was a communicant of Holy Innocents Roman Catholic Church, Neptune, and a former member of Holy Cross Church, Rumson. He was past president of the Port Authority Superiors Association, and Marine Corps League, Philip Dorn Chapter, Belford section of Middletown. He was predeceased by a brother, Frank Distefano, and a sister, Ann Grace Vasselle. He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann Distefano; two sons and daughters-in-law, Gerard J. and Helen Distefano of Oak Hill, Va., and Douglas L. and Alison Distefano of Rumson; two daughters and sons-in-law, Joanne and Steve Garelli of Monmouth Beach, and Diane and Ronan Mevorach of Fair Haven; a sister, Rita Gardner of Bergen County; and seven grandchildren. Ruth Whiting Sniffen
Mrs. Sniffen, 86, of Toms River, died July 8 at home. Born in Red Bank, she was a lifelong resident, and fourth-generation to reside in Red Bank. She was employed at the Sigmund Eisner Factory, Red Bank, during World War II, and was employed in and around Red Bank, retiring to Toms River in 2002. She was predeceased by her husband of 64 years, Raymond Sniffen, in 2002; three brothers, Sheldon, Allen and Frank; and a sister, Alberta. She is survived by a daughter, Diane Alvator; a son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Joanne Sniffen; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. A funeral service was held at Anderson & Campbell Funeral Home, Manchester. Burial

Sigmund M. Kuchta
Mr. Kuchta, 90, of Sayreville, died June 13 in Raritan Bay Medical Center, Old Bridge division. Prior to his retirement in 1981, he was employed as a carpenter for 40 years with Hercules Inc., Parlin section of Sayreville. Surviving are his wife, Pearl Derent Kuchta; three sons, Peter of Eatontown, Paul of Wall and David of Sayreville; four sisters, Josephine Zalewski, Elizabeth Kukulski, Tessie Kwiatkowski and Bernie Kapica, all of Sayreville; a brother, Joseph Kuchta, also of Sayreville; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. A memorial Mass was held at St. Stanislaus Church, Sayreville. Cremation was private.
Janet C. Madden
Mrs. Madden, 86, of Little Silver, died Aug. 6 at Sunrise Assisted Living, Lincroft section of Middletown. She resided in Kearny, and Shrewsbury, prior to moving to Little Silver. She was a member of and M.C.B.C. at United Methodist Church, Red Bank. She was a member of the Arlington Woman's Club, Little Silver Woman's Club, and Shrewsbury Homesteaders. She was predeceased by her husband, Edward J. in 2004; and a son, Edward C. in 2005. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Robert McIntyre of Little Silver; four grandchildren; and one great-grandson. A funeral service will be Aug.. 10 at 11 a.m. at United Methodist Church, Red Bank. Interment

Florence B. Walton
Mrs. Walton, 95, of Shrewsbury, died Aug. 1 at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. Born in Ocean Grove, she resided in Shrewsbury the past 65 years. She was a chief operator at N.J. Bell Telephone Co. for 20 years, retiring in 1976. She was a member of Christ Church of Shrewsbury for more than 50 years. She was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, and her two dogs. She was predeceased by her husband, Howell K. Walton in 1994; a sister, Elizabeth Clifford; and a granddaughter, Melissa Florence Walton. She is survived by a son, Kit Walton of Neptune; a daughter, Randy, with whom she resided; and three grandchildren. A funeral service was held at Christ Church, followed by interment at the church cemetery. Arrangements were by John E. Day Funeral Home, Red Bank. Richard W. Smith
Mr. Smith, 90, of Key Largo, Fla., died July 31 in Florida. Born in Canton, Ohio, he resided in Bloomfield, Middletown, Rumson, and Williamsburg, Va., before moving to Florida this year. Mr. Smith was a greenhouse-manufacturing executive, and former president and co-founder with his late father, X.S. Smith, of X.S. Smith Inc., Eatontown. He was a member of nurserymen's associations in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. He served with the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He was a member of Masonic Temple, Navesink Lodge No. 9, Red Bank. He was an avid boater, woodworker, and golfer, and was also a private pilot. Mr. Smith was predeceased by his first wife, Doreen Parker Smith, in 1981; and a stepdaughter, Nadine Goldsmith. He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Sally Dexter Smith; a son and daughter-in-law, Richard W. "Skip" and Giga Smith of Atlantic Highlands; two daughters and one son-in-law, Gail and William Blandeburgo of Easton, Pa., and Victoria Kerr of Mesa, Ariz.; two stepdaughters, Laurie and her husband Alfred Greenblatt of Westport, Conn., and Cindy Dexter of Key Largo; a sister, Barbara Jane "B.J." Thompson of Fair Haven; seven grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and six step-great grandchildren. A memorial service was held at First Presbyterian Church of Rumson.
