Hugo A. Pinto III
Mr. Pinto, 21, of the Leonardo section of Middletown, died Dec. 1 at Hackensack University Medical Center. Born in Red Bank, he was a lifelong resident of Leonardo. He was a mason at Generelli Masonry Construction Co., Leonardo. He was a communicant of St. Agnes Roman Catholic Church, Atlantic Highlands. He was a graduate of Middletown High School North and attended Brookdale Community College, Lincroft section of Middletown. While at North, he was the recipient of the Senior Athlete Award from the school’s Booster Club. Captain of the varsity wrestling team, District 22 Champion for 2000, he also won the Golden Paw Award from the team, as well as the Coaches Recognition Award from Bayshore Youth Athletic Association. He is survived by his parents, Rene Green and Hugo Pinto; a brother, Yuri Pinto; his paternal grandparents, Elisa and Hugo A. Pinto; and his maternal grandfather, Kenneth Green, all of Leonardo. A funeral liturgy was offered at St. Agnes Roman Catholic Church, Atlantic Highlands. Arrangements were by John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, Middletown. Burial was at Bay View Cemetery, Leonardo. Nunzio Conte
Mr. Conte, 94, of Middletown died Dec. 3 at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. Born in Minturno, Italy, he relocated to the United States in 1939 and resided in East Orange before moving to Middletown in 1973. He was a house painter at Davino Contracting, South Orange, for 40 years, retiring in 1973. He served with the Italian Navy prior to World War II. Mr. Conte was predeceased by his wife of 70 years, Maria Oliva Conte, in February; three brothers; and two sisters. He is survived by two sons, Frank Conte of Clearwater, Fla., and Vincent Conte of Colonia; two daughters, Carmella Della Donna and Teresa Longo, both Middletown; a brother, Anthony Conte of South Orange; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. A funeral liturgy was offered at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, New Monmouth section of Middletown. Arrangements were by John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, Middletown. Burial was at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Hanover.
Elsie Benton Moody
Mrs. Moody, 94, of Union Beach died Dec. 3 at Laurel Bay Nursing Home, Keansburg. She resided in the Leonardo section of Middletown, Cliffwood Beach section of Aberdeen, and Newark prior to moving to Union Beach 39 years ago. Mrs. Moody was a homemaker. She is survived by her husband, James Moody; a daughter, Marilyn Carter of Little Egg Harbor; a sister, Ella Benton; a brother, John Benton; and one grandson. Arrangements were by Day Funeral Home, Keyport.
Charles J. Sininski
Mr. Sininski, 57, of Hazlet died Dec. 8 at Bayshore Community Hospital, Holmdel. Born in Jersey City, he resided there prior to moving to Hazlet 14 years ago. He was a telephone installer at NJ Bell Telephone and AT&T Lucent Technologies in New Jersey, retiring in 1999. He served with the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He was a communicant of Holy Family Roman Catholic Church, Union Beach. Mr. Sininski was predeceased by his parents, Rose Barbato and Vincent Sininski. He is survived by his wife, Helen Dunn Sininski; a son, Charles Sininski of Jackson; a daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Dennis Brady of Aberdeen; and one granddaughter. Visitation will be Dec. 10 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at Day Funeral Home, Keyport. A funeral service will be held Dec. 11 at a time to be announced.
Joseph A. Occhiuzzo Sr.
Mr. Occhiuzzo, 61, of Cream Ridge, died Nov. 21 at home. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., he had lived in Staten Island, N.Y., Allentown and Whiting before moving to Cream Ridge two years ago. He was a self-employed importer and exporter. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Brooklyn. Mr. Occhiuzzo is survived by his wife, Theresa Viscuso Occhiuzzo; a son and daughter-in-law, Joseph R. and Laura Occhiuzzo of Cream Ridge; a sister and brother-in-law, Carol and Anthony Panzica of Belford; and one granddaughter. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. John’s Roman Catholic Church, Allentown, followed by interment at Green-Wood Cemetery, Brooklyn.
David Thaler
Mr. Thaler, 63, of Naples, Fla., died Nov. 15. Born in Belleville, Thaler grew up there, then resided in Marlboro and Freehold Township. He was a former publisher of Greater Media Newspapers, which publishes the Independent, and a former vice president of the printing and publishing division of Greater Media Inc., the parent company of Greater Media Newspapers. Thaler founded the Bayshore Independent in 1970 and published it for 17 years until it was purchased by Greater Media Newspapers in 1987. The weekly newspaper focused on community news in the Bayshore area of Monmouth County - Keyport, Aberdeen, Hazlet, Keansburg and parts of Middletown. Thaler continued to work for Greater Media for five years. He became general manager of the Home News Tribune, East Brunswick, in 1996. At the Home News Tribune, he was responsible for advertising, circulation and news. He retired to Florida in 1999. Thaler was a graduate of the University of Missouri School of Journalism. He was an avid sports fan who loved to play and teach tennis. He especially loved watching the New York Giants play football. He competed in area tennis tournaments and gave private tennis lessons at his home in Freehold Township. He enjoyed the time he spent coaching the Freehold Borough High School boys tennis team for several years in the early 1990s. Surviving are his wife, Sondra; two sons, Philip and Ian; a daughter, Fern; two sisters, Tina and Debbe; his mother, Ida; and his grandchildren, Renee and Ross. Services were held at the Freeman Funeral Home, Manalapan. Interment was at Beth Israel Cemetery, Woodbridge.
Ellen T. Poyer Burns
Mrs. Burns, 70, of Hazlet died Nov. 17 at Bayshore Community Hospital, Holmdel. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she resided in Queens, N.Y., prior to moving to Hazlet 32 years ago. She worked at ShopRite, Middletown, retiring in 1993. She was a communicant of Holy Family Roman Catholic Church, Union Beach. She is survived by her husband, George Burns of Hazlet; five sons, John Burns of York, Pa., Brian Burns of Freehold, Robert Burns of Berkeley Heights, George Burns of East Brunswick, and Richard Burns of Stroudsburg, Pa.; three sisters, Dorothy Herlihy of Lyndhurst, N.Y.; Joan Breen of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and Carol Sesny of Staten Island, N.Y.; and 13 grandchildren. Arrangements were by Day Funeral Home, Keyport. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at Holy Family Church. Interment was at Fair View Cemetery, Middletown.
Lucille Ranello Favorito
Mrs. Favorito, 64, of Red Bank died Nov. 20 at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune. Born in New York City, she resided in Middletown prior to moving to Red Bank 10 years ago. She was a debt collector at United Teletech Federal Credit Union, Tinton Falls, the past five years. Prior to that, she was employed at Wholesale Warehouse, Red Bank, and McGraw Hill, New York City and Hightstown. Mrs. Favorito is survived by two sons and one daughter-in-law, Mark Favorito of Freehold, and Mitchel and Kristen Favorito of Tinton Falls; a daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth Favorito and David Walunas of Aberdeen; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Linda and Danny Galante of Baldwin, N.Y., and Anne and Jack Blatt of Flushing, N.Y.; and four grandchildren. Arrangements were by John E. Day Funeral Home, Red Bank. Desmond R. "Desi" Shanley
Mr. Shanley, 74, of Red Bank died Nov. 2 at home. Born in Jersey City, he resided there and in Rumson before moving to Red Bank. He was general organizer and serviced the Ironworker’s District Council of Greater New York before retiring in 1994. He began his career as an ironworker in 1954, serving as a member of New York Local 40, and business agent and president of Local 170, New York City. He was also a professional boxer who finished his career with more than 70 victories, and was inducted into the New Jersey Boxing Hall of Fame in 1989. He served with the U.S. Air Force during World War II. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Helen Shanley of Red Bank; four daughters and two sons-in-law, Felicia and Roy Edwards of Neptune, Danielle Shanley of Highlands, Sue and Tom Schroll of Red Bank, and Michelle Shanley of San Francisco; three brothers, Raymond Shanley of Bayonne, the Rev. Kevin O’Carm of Darien, Ill., and Michael Shanley of Jersey City; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Ann Marie and Robert Brooks of Centerville, Mass., and Colleen and Lester Jennings of Eatontown; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at Holy Cross Roman Catholic Church, Rumson. Interment
was at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Middletown. Arrangements were by John E. Day Funeral Home, Red Bank.
