Harold V. Whelan Sr., 86, owned insurance agency

A Mass for Harold V. Whelan Sr., 86, of Roselle will be at 10 a.m. Friday in St. Joseph the Carpenter Church, Roselle, after the funeral from the Leonard Home for Funerals, 242 West Jersey St., Elizabeth.
Mr. Whelan died Monday in Trinitas Hospital, Elizabeth.
An insurance broker, he owned the Edward L. Whelan Insurance Agency, Elizabeth, for many years before retiring in 1980. Earlier, he had been a claims adjuster and supervisor with General Accident and St. Paul Insurance in Newark.
He was a 1939 graduate of Newark University, now Rutgers University, and a 1942 graduate of Newark Law, now Rutgers University School of Law.
Mr. Whelan served in the Army during World War II.
He was a member of the Suburban Golf Club in Union, where he had been club champion 11 times. He also was a member of the Roselle Golf Club, earning the title of club champion in 1973.
Mr. Whelan was instrumental in organizing the swim club at Roselle Golf Club.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus St. Joseph Council in Roselle.
Born in Elizabeth, Mr. Whelan lived in Roselle for the past 50 years.
Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth; a sons, Harold V. Jr. and Lawrence; a daughter, Mrs. Robin Whelan-Dyknan, and three grandchildren.
Minnie Young, 100, of Bloomfield

Mrs. Minnie Young, 100, of Bloomfield died yesterday in the Lakeland Health Care Center, Haskell.
A Mass will be at 10 a.m. Friday in St. Thomas the Apostle Church, Bloomfield, after the funeral from the O’Boyle Funeral Home, 309 Broad St., Bloomfield.
Mrs. Young celebrated her 100th birthday on July 8.
Born in Newark, she lived in West Orange before moving to Bloomfield 20 years ago.
Surviving are daughters, Mrs. Beatrice Uva, Mrs. Victoria DeVito and Mrs. Margaret DiPaola; eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Vito J. Zollo

A Mass for Vito J. Zollo, 74, of Orange will be at 10 a.m. tomorrow in Mount Carmel Church, Orange, after the funeral from the Paul Ippolito Memorial, 252-256 Henry St., Orange.
Mr. Zollo, who died Monday at home, was a machinist with Heller Industries in Roseland for 10 years before retiring in 1988.
He served in the Navy during World War II and was a past commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post in Roseland.
Born in Wakefield, Mass., he lived Orange most of his life.
Surviving is a son, Stephen.
Samuel Isadore Sontz

Samuel Isadore Sontz, 84, of Edison died yesterday in St. Peter’s University Hospital, New Brunswick.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. today in Mount Lebanon Cemetery, Iselin. Arrangements are by Goldstein Funeral Chapel, Edison.
Mr. Sontz was an inspector for Mattel in Edison for many years before retiring.
Born in New York City, he moved to Edison 20 years ago.
Surviving are his wife, Libby; a son, Howard; a daughter, Mrs. Elisha Klein; a sister, Mrs. Tiby Gersht, and four grandchildren.
Joseph C. Stopinski, Green Brook police chief, 57

Joseph C. Stopinski, 57, of Largo, Fla., a former New Jersey resident, died yesterday in the Largo Medical Center.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in the James W. Conroy Funeral Home, 2456 Plainfield Ave., South Plainfield. Cremation will be private.
A member of the Green Brook Police Department since 1971, Mr. Stopinski was promoted to chief in 1992, a post he held until retiring in 1996.
He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 23 of Green Brook and the Somerset County and State Police Chiefs associations.
Born in Plainfield, he lived in South Plainfield and North Plainfield before moving to Largo five years ago.
Surviving are his wife, Cecelia; a son, Joseph C. Jr.; a daughter, Linda Ann, and two grandchildren.

Ruth Struck

Services for Mrs. Ruth Struck, 90, of Wall Township will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Van Tassel Chickene Funeral Home, 337 Belleville Ave., Bloomfield.
Mrs. Struck died Monday in Sunnyside Manor Nursing Home, Wall Township.
She was a charter member of the Broad and Bay Bowling League, Bloomfield, for more than 40 years. She was also a member of Eastern Star Chapter 61, Bloomfield.
Born in East Orange, she lived in Bloomfield before moving to Wall Township this year.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Marie O’Connell; a son, Stephen; a sister, Mrs. Betty Courter; seven grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
