Robert John Goodall
Mr. Goodall, 63, of Ocean Township, died Sept. 25, 2007. Born in Geneva, N.Y., he relocating to Monmouth County in 1974. He was the owner of a bed and breakfast inn in Spring Lake. He was an artist and member of the Guild of Creative Art, Shrewsbury. He also enjoyed baking, landscaping, travel and decorating. He was predeceased by his father, John Goodall; and his father-in-law, Stewart Folts. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Louise Folts Goodall; two daughters and one son-inlaw, Nichole and Paul MacManus of Fair Haven, and Kerri Goodall of Eatontown; a son and daughter-in-law, Christopher and Amanda Goodall of Maryland; his mother, Mabel Goodall of Geneva, N.Y.; a sister and brother-in-law, Shirley and Bob Hunt of Stanley, N.Y.; his mother-in-law, Elisabeth Folts of Geneseo, N.Y.; a grandson; and three nephews. A funeral service was held at First Presbyterian Church at Red Bank-Tower Hill. Arrangements were by John E. Day Funeral Home, Red Bank.
Rocco F. "Rocky" Severini Sr.
Mr. Severini, 92, of Eatontown, died Sept. 25, 2007, at St. Barnabas Hospice, Long Branch. He resided in Tinton Falls for 38 years, prior to relocating to Eatontown 17 years ago. He was a retired self-employed painter for 45 years ago. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a communicant of St. Dorothea's Roman Catholic Church, Eatontown. He was predeceased by his wife of 58 years, Fannie Cantillo Severini in 1999. He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Rocco L. and Ronda of Oceanside, Calif., and Salvatore V. and Joan of Eatontown; two daughters and one son-in-law, Rose and James Scarle, and Margaret Johnson, all of Eatontown; two brothers, Salvatore and Charles; two sisters, Betty and Eleanor; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. James Francis Clarity III
Mr. Clarity, 75, of Long Branch, died Sept. 20 at his home. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., the son of James Francis Clarity Jr. and the former Catherine Finnegan, he attended George Washington University, the Ecole Nationale des Langues Orientales Vivantes in Paris, and graduated from Fordham University in 1958. In 1961 he earned a master's degree from Fordham University, New York, in Russian language and literature.
Mr. Clarity was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, where he apprenticed as a journalist. He then worked as a reporter at the New York Journal- American. He went to the New York Herald Tribune, where he was named City Hall bureau chief, Albany bureau chief, and then Paris bureau chief in 1965 and 1966. After a short stay at Newsweek magazine, he joined The New York Times, covering New York politicians.
In 1969 Mr. Clarity became a foreign correspondent in Moscow, and in 1971 he returned to New York, where he covered politics and wrote the "Notes on People" column. In 1973 he was assigned to Saigon, and in 1974 he became bureau chief in Teheran. During 1975 he did two tours of Moscow and then joined the Paris bureau to cover the Middle East.
In 1977 he returned to the U.S. as bureau chief in Philadelphia. In 1983 he covered West Africa and worked in the Washington, D.C., bureau, then became editor of foreign news for the Week in Review. In September 1988 he became assistant foreign editor. From 1991 until 1999, he continued to report from the Republic of Ireland.
He retired to Paris in 2000, and then to Long Branch in 2004 to be close to his family.
Mr. Clarity enjoyed life with a formidable intellectual curiosity and had a great sense of humor and sharp wit. He was a loving and fun father and grandfather and was known by many all over the world as a caring and passionate friend. He loved reading, music, long walks, the Yankees and the Rangers.
Mr. Clarity is survived by his daughter, Frances Clarity Stokes, and her husband, Martin Richard Stokes, of London; his sons, James Clarity IV of Monmouth Beach and Christopher Clarity of Queens, N.Y.; his daughter, Elizabeth Clarity of Manhattan Beach, Calif.; his grandchildren, Sarah Calcott Stokes and Colin James Stokes of London; his former wife, Elizabeth Sheehan; the Newbould family of Virginia, and the Sheehan family.
Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. Sept. 29 at the John E. Day Funeral Home, 85 Riverside Ave., Red Bank. Donations in his name may be made to Doctors Without Borders. James D. McGettigan
Mr. McGettigan, 83, of Freehold Township, died Sept. 16, 2007, at CareOne at Holmdel. Born in the Port Reading section of Woodbridge, he had lived in Rahway before moving to Freehold Township 10 years ago. He was a machinist at the Hyatt-Clark Roller Bearing plant in Clark prior to becoming the owner of the Squires Inn in Gouldsboro, Pa., and the Blarney Stone in Roselle Park. He later worked as a security officer at Rahway Hospital. A U.S. Army veteran, Mr. McGettigan served with the 3rd Infantry Division in Europe during World War II. He received the Purple Heart and four Bronze Stars. He was also a prisoner of war. He was a member and past commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7363, Clark; a member of POW Chapter No. 1 of New Jersey; a former member of the Knights of Columbus, Rahway; and a member of the Shade Tree Commission, Clark. Mr. McGettigan was predeceased by his first wife, Virginia McGettigan, in 1955. Surviving are his wife of 28 years, Mary Lou McGettigan; two sons, James D. McGettigan Jr. of Neptune and Richard McGettigan of Red Bank; a daughter and son-in-law, Donna and John Lee of Bethlehem Township; and a sister, Elizabeth Sass of Winfield Park. A funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church, Freehold, followed by burial at Brig. Gen. William C. Doyle Veterans Cemetery, Arnytown section of North Hanover.
Evelyn Banta Gammon
Mrs. Gammon, 86, of Sarasota, Fla., died Aug. 12, 2007. Prior to moving to Sarasota, she had resided in Rumson. She had been a dance chorus member on Broadway. Mrs. Gammon and her husband were active in the local community and schools, and organized and directed several fundraisers, shows and church fairs. She is survived by four sons, Stephen of Sarasota, Peter of Signal Mountain, Tenn., David of Worcester, Mass., and Andrew of Orlando, Fla.; and four grandchildren. Arrangements were by James A. Mary Mari "Gussie" Traversa
Mrs. Traversa, 96, of Long Branch, died Sept. 16, 2007, at St Barnabas Hospice and Palliative Care Center, Long Branch. Born in Italy, she was a lifelong resident of Long Branch. She was employed for several years at Daniel's Ladies Apparel, Long Branch. She was predeceased by her husband, August Traversa in 1975; and a son Richard "Dicky" Traversa in 2006. She is survived by a son and two daughters-in-law, Ronald and Lucille Traversa of West Long Branch, and Ceil Traversa of Long Branch; a sister, Marian Mari Musich of Long Branch; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Dimitrios "Jim" Balanikas
Mr. Balanikas, 81, of Litohoro, Greece, and formerly Red Bank, died Sept. 11, 2007. Born in Greece, he immigrated with his family to the United States, became a U.S. citizen in 1976, and he resided in Red Bank until his retirement in 1993 when he relocated to Greece. He was the founder of Balanikas Painting. During retirement, he owned an olive, chestnut, grape and peach farm in Greece. He was a member of St Georges Greek Orthodox Church, Asbury Park. During the Nazi invasion of Greece, he and several other young men went into hiding on Mount Olympus to escape being forced into war labor and help with the Greek Resistance. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Katina; three sons and daughters-in-law, the Rev. George and Georgia Balanikas of Litohoro, Greece, Nicholas and Denise Balanikas of Red Bank, and Paul and Camille Balanikas of Middletown; and six grandchildren. Funeral services were held in Greece.
Franz Albrecht von Ziegesar
Mr. von Ziegesar, 83, of Sea Bright, died Sept. 8, 2007, at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank, following a battle with prostate cancer. He was born in Sao Paolo, Brazil. He was the retired CEO and chairman of the board at Bowne & Co., New York City, where he was employed 41 years. He served with the U.S. Armed Forces in Germany as a translator in the U.S. Strategic Bombing Survey. Mr. von Ziegesar created the first conservation easement in Canada, and founded the environmental group the Lothan von Ziegesar Foundation. He was an avid sailor. He is survived by his third wife, Elizabeth Trudell von Ziegesar; his children, Franz P. von Ziegesar, Olga Cheney von Ziegesar, Lisa von Ziegesar-Whip, and Cecily von Ziegesar; two stepsons, Peter Raymond Sluis von Ziegesar and Erik Falconer von Ziegesar; and 10 grandchildren. A funeral service was held at Sea Bright United Methodist Church. Arrangements were by John E. Day Funeral Home, Red Bank. Eva May Ryder
Mrs. Ryder, 92, of Red Bank, died Sept. 2, 2007, at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she resided in Rumson prior to relocating to Red Bank 69 years ago. She was a homemaker. She was a 79-year member of First Baptist Church of Red Bank, and served as president of its women's evening circle. She was a member of the Ne3edlework Guild of Middletown, and honorary member of Jersey Shore Running Club. She was predeceased by her husband, John in 1973. She is survived by four children, Marilyn Ryder of Long Branch, John L. Ryder of Brick, Judy and Ed Schindler of Middletown, and Bonnie and Rob Santomenna of Shrewsbury; a sister and brother-in-law, June and John Heher of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be Sept. 7 at 10:30 a.m. at Thompson Memorial Home, Red Bank. Interment
