Israel Meltzer
BRIDGEWATER - Israel Meltzer, 69, of Mount Bethel road,
Warrenville, suffered a fatal heart attack about 7:30
a.m. yesterday and died in his
car in the lane of the Abram V.N. Powelson farm, Route
206, north of Green Knoll.
Mr. Meltzer, a catle (sic) dealer, had driven to the
Powelson place to talk with the farmer about a matter
of business. He had parked his car and was talking
with men at the barn when he suddenly complained of
feeling ill. Mr. Powelson phoned immediately for the
Somerville Rescue Squad.
The Warren Township man expired before the squad and
State Trooper Gino Conti reached the farm. County
Physician D.T. Russo of Raritan said the death was
caused by heart disease.
Mr. Meltzer was a native of Poland, coming to the
United States about 1906.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Rose Meltzer, and
a daughter, Mrs. Gertrude Ansel of Plainfield.
The body was removed to the Higgins Funeral Home
in Plainfield.
Mrs. Stewart Sutton
BERNARDSVILLE - Mrs. Barbara Schaefer Sutton,
42, wife of Stewart K. Sutton of Essex avenue,
died Thursday in Community Medical Center,
Boonton, after a long illness. Mrs. Sutton had
lived here since 1931.
Besides her husband, Mrs. Sutton is survived
by three children, Barbara Anne, Stewart and
Joseph Sutton, all at home; her mother,
Mrs. Margaret Schaefer of Erwinna, Pa., two
brothers, Peter Schafer(sic) of Erwinna and
Frank Schaefer of Little York, Pa., and two
sisters, Mrs. Margaret Palmieri of Union City
and Mrs. Ann Fehrman of Milford.
Services were held Sunday at the Gallaway &
Crane Funeral Home here, the
Rev. Frederick E. Jenkins, pastor of
Bernardsville Methodist Church,
officiating. Interment
was in Hilltop
Cemetery, Mendham.
Mrs. Clinton Dutcher
BOUND BROOK - Mrs. Florence Van Doren Dutcher
of 329 Hamilton street died Monday at the
Hamilton Nursing Home, New Brunswick. She was the
widow of Clinton Dutcher.
Mrs. Dutcher was a member of the Bound Brook
Presbyterian Church and its women's organizations.
Surviving are two grandchildren, Allen Dutcher of
Fort Meade, Md., and Miss Carol Dutcher of this
place; a sister, Miss Estelle Van Doren of
this place, and several nieces, nephews,
grandnieces and grand nephews.
Services were held yesterday at the
Taggart-Chamberlain Funeral Home, the
Rev. Carlton Allen, pastor of the Presbyterian
Church, officiating. Interment
was in
Bound Brook Cemetery.
Mrs. Newton Brown
BASKING RIDGE - Mrs. Elizabeth Brown, 88,
a native of this place and a resident until
40 years ago, died Monday at the home of her
daughter, Mrs. Ralph Dobocq of Long Island,
after a long illness. She was the wife
of Newton E. Brown, who died in 1912.
Besides Mrs. Dobocq, Mrs. Brown is survived
by a son, John N. Brown of Long Island;
two other daughters, Mrs. Chancellor Mackeown
of New York and Mrs. H.C. Balke of Cleveland,
Ohio; seven grandchildren; two great
grandchildren, and two sisters,
Mrs. M.L. Connolly and Miss Nettie Allen,
both of this place.
Services will be held today at 3 p.m. at the
Presbyterian Church, the Rev. William Felmeth,
pastor, officiating. Interment
will be in
Evergreen Cemetery.
W.J. Mansfield
RARITAN - William J. Mansfield, 49, of
111 First avenue, former president of Federal
Labor Union 21626, A.F. of L., at the Manville
plant of Johns-Manville Corporation, died
Sunday in Somerset Hospital after a long
illness.
Mr. Mansfield was a lifelong resident of this
place and had been employed at Johns-Manville
as a section man in the tile plant. He was a
member of Somerset Aerie, Fraternal Order of
Eagles.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Helen Mansfield;
a daughter, Mrs. Loretta Basilone of this
place; two grandchildren; two brothers, Police
Sergeant James Mansfield of Plainfield and
Thomas Mansfield of Colorado, and a sister,
Sister Loretta of Holy Ghost Hospital,
Cambridge, Mass.
Services were held yesterday at the Cusick
Funeral Home, Somerville, and St. Bernard's
Church, where a mass of requiem was celebrated.
Interment was in St. Bernard's Cemetery.
William A. Rickborn
FRANKLIN - William A. Rickborn, 62, of Cedar
Grove road, a farmer, died unexpectedly
Saturday at his home.
Mr. Rickborn was born in Tappan, N.Y., and
had been a resident of this township 25 years.
He was a veteran of World War I.
Surviving is a brother, Edward Rickborn of
Cedar Grove road.
Services were held yesterday at the
Taggart-Chamberlain Funeral Home, Bound Brook,
the Rev. Daniel U. Smith, pastor of the
South Bound Brook Reformed Church officiating.
Interment was in the Tappan Reformed
Church Cemetery.
Charles D'Epagnier
FAR HILLS - Charles D'Epagnier, 78, of
Peapack road died Monday in All Souls Hospital,
Morristown, from injuries suffered in a fall at
his home last week.
A native of New York, Mr. D'Epagnier was a
retired farmer and had been employed for a
number of years on the Schley estate. He was
sexton of St. Elizabeth's Church here.
Surviving are his wife,
Mrs. Delia Carey D'Epagnier; two sons, Charles
D'Epagnier Jr., at home and John D'Epagnier of
Silver Springs, Md.; a daughter, Mrs. Thomas Gill
of this place and 11 grandchildren.
Services were held yesterday at the Bailey
Funeral Home, Peapack-Gladstone, and in
St. Elizabeth's Church, where a requiem high
mass was celebrated. Interment
was in
Holy Cross Cemetery, Basking Ridge.
Mrs. Irla A. Brennan
Mrs. Irla A. Brennan, 75, of West End avenue,
Bridgewater Township violations and court clerk
and mother of Miss Kathryn Brennan, children's
librarian at the Somerville Public Library, died
Sunday at her home after a long illness.
Mrs. Brennan was the wife of Daniel T. Brennan,
a member of the New York
City police force who died in 1949 from an
illness brought on by injuries received in the
line of duty.
For the past several months Mrs. Brennan had
been on sick leave from her duties as violations
and court clerk as the result of a heart ailment
which had hospitalized her early this Summer.
She had been recovering at home.
Registered Nurse
A native of Chatham, N.Y., Mrs. Brennan was
a registered nurse. She was a graduate of
Bellevue Hospital, New York City.
She and her husband moved to Bridgewater in
1925 although Mr. Brennan continued as a member
of the New York police force until 1940.
Mrs. Brennan was named Bridgewater violations
clerk in 1949 and became court clerk the
following year.
Miss Brennan is her mother's only survivor.
Services were held Tuesday at the
Maxwell Funeral Home, Dr. David R.
Evans, pastor of the First Reformed Church,
officiating. Interment
was in New Cemetery.
