Stanley R. Katz

Stanley R. Katz, of West End, the mayor of Deal from 1979 through 1995, died yesterday in the Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch.
Services will be held at noon today in Temple Beth El, Ocean. Arrangements are under the direction of the Worden-Hoidal Funeral Home, Oakhurst.
Mr. Katz served as the mayor of Deal for 16 years and was a member of the Deal Board of Commissioners from 1967 through 1979.
He maintained a law practice in Deal and was a member of the New Jersey Bar Association, the New York Bar Association and a trustee of the Monmouth Bar Association from 1968 through 1974.
Mr. Katz earned a bachelor’s degree in 1939 from Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y., and a law degree in 1941 from Cornell University Law School.
He had been appointed by the New Jersey Supreme Court as a member of the Ethics and Grievance Committee.
Mr. Katz was chairman of the Monmouth County Law Day Committee from 1958 through 1963 and was an attorney for the Millstone Township Board of Adjustment.
An Army veteran of World War II, he was a first lieutenant and rifle platoon leader in the 325 Glider Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division participating in the invasions of Sicily, Italy, and France.
Mr. Katz was awarded the Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Bronze Star, the Combat Infantry Badge, the Distinguished United Badge, Glider Wings and three Invasion Arrowheads. He permanently retired from military service as a result of wounds received in action during the Normandy invasion on D-Day, June 6, 1994.
He was a trustee of Temple Beth El, Oakhurst, and had served as president of the Deal Parent-Teacher Association.
Mr. Katz also was active with the Deal Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts for many years.
Born in Orange, he lived in Deal before moving to West End in 1996.
Surviving are four sons, Richard, Steven, Robert and Johnathan, and 10 grandchildren.
Sylvia Kalnitsky

Mrs. Sylvia Kalnitsky, 77, of West Orange, the owner of a secretarial service and a typing and short hand instructor, died yesterday in St. Barnabas Medical Center, Livingston.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. today in the Menorah Chapels at Millburn, 2950 Vaux Hall Rd., Union.
Mrs. Kalnitsky was an aide in the workshop division of the Jewish Vocational Service, East Orange, for many years before retiring in 1988.
Earlier, she owned Kal’s Secretarial Service in Newark for 12 years with Allan, her husband of 57 years. She also taught typing and short hand at the North Jersey Secretarial School in Newark.
She graduated from Essex Junior College, Newark.
Mrs. Kalnitsky was a member of the Sisterhood of Temple B’Nai Israel, Nutley, and B’Nai Shalom of the Jewish Center of West Orange.
She also was a member of the Nutley-Belleville Hadassah, West Orange Hadassah and the American Association of Retired Persons.
Mrs. Kalnitsky volunteered at St. Barnabas Medical Center.
Born in Newark, she lived in East Orange and Clifton before moving to West Orange 33 years ago.
Also surviving are two sons, Bruce and Steven.
Gladys May Victoria Johnson

Mrs. Gladys May Victoria Johnson, 100, of Paramus died yesterday at home.
Services will be at 9 a.m. Tuesday in the Vander Plaat Memorial Home, S113 Farview Ave., Paramus.
Mrs. Johnson was a pastor with the Salvation Army in New York City for many years before retiring.
Born in Milton, England, she lived in Lyndhurst before moving to Paramus in 1992.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Florence Stains; a son, Thomas; four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Arthur Roberts

Services for Arthur Roberts, 64, a lifelong resident of Elizabeth, will be at 11 a.m. tomorrow in the Nesbitt Funeral Home, 165 Madison Ave., Elizabeth.
Mr. Roberts, who died Tuesday at home, was a bartender in the Elizabeth area for many years.
He served in the Air Force during peacetime.
Surviving are brothers, Roy Roach and Edward and Nathaniel Roberts, and a sister, Jeannette Roberts.
John La Grasso

A Mass for John R. La Grasso, 77, a lifelong resident of Newark, will be offered at 9:30 a.m. Monday in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Newark. The funeral will be from the Galante Funeral Home, 2800 Morris Ave., Union.
Mr. La Grasso, who died Wednesday in St. James Hospital, Newark, was a maintenance worker with Chase Chemical Co. in Newark for 30 years before retiring in 1987.
A Navy veteran of World War II, he served with the Seabees.
Mr. La Grasso was a member of the Adam Street Social Club in Newark.
Surviving are his wife, Lucy; a son, Nunzio; two daughters, Mrs. Linda Anna Marfia and Mrs. Lisa Maccia; a brother, Tom, and eight grandchildren.
Jack Lasky

Graveside services for Jack Lasky, 87, of Elizabeth will be held at 11:30 a.m. today in Mount Lebanon Cemetery, Iselin. Arrangements are by the Menorah Chapels at Millburn, Union.
Mr. Lasky died Wednesday in the Inglemoor Care Center, Livingston.
He was employed in the produce department of King’s supermarket in Garwood before retiring two years ago.
Mr. Lasky was a member of the Young Men’s Hebrew Club, Union.
Born in Newark, he lived in Hillside before moving to Elizabeth many years ago.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Sheila Leen and Mrs. Marcia Schwartz; two brothers, Joe and Sol; two sisters, Mrs. Mame Kohn and Jean; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Joseph Lenkiewicz

A Mass for Joseph Lenkiewicz, 80, of Little Egg Harbor will be offered at 9:30 a.m. tomorrow in St. Theresa’s Church, Main Street, Tuckerton. Arrangements are by the Maxwell Funeral Home, Little Egg Harbor.
Mr. Lenkiewicz, who died Wednesday in the University of Pennsylvania Hospital, Philadelphia, was an ink mixer for 25 years with Lewis Roberts Inc., Newark, before retiring in 1982.
From 1942 to 1947, he served as a corporal in the Polish Army, in Egypt and Israel. He was wounded in combat.
Mr. Lenkiewicz was a member of SPK Polish Veterans in Exile in Elizabeth.
Born in Batury, Poland, he lived in Woodbridge Township before moving to Little Egg Harbor two years ago.
Surviving are Elizabeth, his wife of 53 years; a daughter, Mrs. Monica Petti; two sons, Edward and Benjamin; 11 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
