BENEDETTA BATTISTA “BETTY” (nee DiModugno), of Kearny, died Monday, Oct. 28, 2002. She was 81. Born in New York City, she lived in the Bronx before moving to Kearny 55 years ago. She died at home. She was a member of the Henrietta Benstaed Senior Center, Kearny. She was a receptionist for First Union Fidelity, Newark, for 15 years before retiring in 1987. Wife of Lewis T. Battista; mother of Lewis C. and his wife, Patricia; sister of Grace Mastropietro and Nicholas DiModugno; three grandchildren, Joseph, Karen and Michael. Funeral services were conducted by the Wilfred Armitage Funeral Home, 596 Belgrove Drive, Kearny. A funeral mass was held in St. Stephen’s Church. Entombment was in Holy Cross Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Stephen’s Church.
JOSEPHINE DALY (nee Cardea)
JOSEPHINE DALY (nee Cardea), of Brick, died Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2002. She was 81. Born in Harrison, she lived in Brick for 15 years. She died at the Medical Center of Ocean County, Brick. She was a employed with the Town of Harrison for 38 years as a clerk in the Violations Department, retiring in 1986. Beloved wife of the late Harry Daly; loving sister of Sam Cardea, Grace Lombardo, Mary Caruso and the late Natale Cardea; cherished aunt of eight nieces and nephews and seven great-nieces and nephews and three great-great nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted by the Mulligan Funeral Home, 331 Cleveland Ave., Harrison. A funeral mass was held in St. Anthony’s Church, East Newark. Entombment was in Holy Cross Chapel Mausoleum.
LILLIAN M. GILLESPIE “BILLIE”
LILLIAN M. GILLESPIE “BILLIE”, of South Whitehall, Pa., died Friday, Nov. 1, 2002. She was 90. Born in Schuylkill Haven, Pa., she lived in Kearny for 50 years before moving to South Whitehall, Pa. eight years ago. She died at Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township, Pa. She was a lifetime member of the Girl Scouts of America, past president of West Hudson Hospital Women’s Auxiliary in Kearny and served as a volunteer at the hospital for 42 years. She was a Red Cross volunteer and a member of the Arlington Women’s Club, Kearny. For over 20 years, she was a board member and a volunteer nurse at the Inter-County Council on Drug and Alcohol Abuse Clinic in Kearny. For many years, she was a volunteer at the West Hudson/South Bergen Boys Club in Kearny which was founded by her late husband. Predeceased by her husband, Dr. J. Lawrence Gillespie, she is survived by her daughters, Priscilla E. Nagy and Patricia A. Gillespie. Also surviving is a grandson. Funeral services were conducted by the Thiele Family Funeral Home, 241 Kearny Ave., Kearny. A funeral service was held in the First Lutheran Church of Kearny. Interment
was in Arlington Cemetery, Kearny. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Girl Scout Council of Greater Essex and Hudson Counties, 120 Valley Rd., Montclair, NJ 07042 or to Boy Scout Troop 72, Fogelsville, PA 18051.
TERESA M. GRECO
TERESA M. GRECO, of Kearny, died Monday, Oct. 28, 2002. She was 73. Born in Sendai, Japan, she lived in Kearny for 49 years. She died at St. Barnabas Hospital, Livingston. She was a homemaker. Beloved wife for 49 years of Joseph; devoted mother of Frank, Irene, John and Mrs. Barbara Lee; cherished grandmother of seven. Funeral services were conducted by the Edward T. Reid Home for Funerals, 585 Belgrove Drive, Kearny. A funeral mass was held in St. Cecilia’s Church, Kearny. Interment
was in Holy Cross Cemetery.

CECILIA MARTINEZ (nee Silveira), of Harrison, died Saturday, Oct. 26, 2002. She was 82. Born in Cieafugos, Cuba, she lived in Harrison for 37 years. She died at West Hudson Hospital, Kearny. She was a homemaker. She is survived by her daughters, Maria Fernandez and Margarita Calado and sisters, Silvia Silveira and Onelia Silveira. Funeral services were conducted by the Mulligan Funeral Home, 331 Cleveland Ave., Harrison. A private cremation followed in Rosedale Cemetery
Crematory, Orange.

ANTOINETTE BELFIORE O’ROURKE, of Harrison, died Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2002. She was 88. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she lived in Harrison most of her life. She died at home. Predeceased by her husband, Elmer in 1996, she is survived by her daughter, Mauren Liles of Alvin, Texas; three sisters, Mildred Minella of East Rutherford, Frances Belfiore also of East Rutherford and Anna Graziano of Belleville; one brother Louis Belfiore of Calif. and a granddaughter. Funeral services were conducted by the Mitruska Funeral Home, 531 New Brunswick Ave., Fords.

ROSE SANTOS (nee Smith), of Kearny, died Sunday, Nov. 3, 2002. She was 69. Born in Newark, she lived in East Newark before moving to Kearny 42 years ago. She died at West Hudson Hospital, Kearny. Wife of the late George; mother of Kevin Santos and Denise Munro; sister of Betty Blue, Gracy Coyler and Bob Smith. Also surviving are her grandchildren Denise, Lauren and Kristin Rose.
