ANNA BALCHUNAS (nee Matus), of Kearny, died Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2002. She was 89. Born in Camden, she lived in Kearny 76 years. She died in Lakeview Subacute Care Center in Wayne. She retired 24 years ago after 24 years with the General Instrument Co. in East Newark where she was an assembler. She was a member of the Rosary and St. Anne's Society of Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Kearny and the Friendship Club of Kearny Senior Citizens. Funeral services were conducted by the Edward T. Reid Home for Funerals, 585 Belgrove Drive, Kearny. A funeral mass was held in Our Lady of Sorrows Church, Kearny. Interment
was in Holy Cross Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions to Our Lady of Sorrows Church would be appreciated.
ELEANOR K. ARMITAGE, of Wall Township, died Monday, Oct. 21, 2002. She was 87. Born in Summit, she lived in Newark, Kearny, the Metedeconk section of Brick Township, Lakewood and Ocean Grove before moving to Wall Township four months ago. She died in her son's home. She was past president of the League of Women Voters, Brick, and the Ocean County League of Women Voters. She was a well-known environmentalist and activist in the preservation of the wetlands of Barnegat Bay and the Metedeconck River in the 1960s and 1970s. She was very active in many clubs and guilds at Leisure Village East, Lakewood. Surviving are three sons, John W. of Brielle, Robert W. of Wall and James W. of Florida; on brother, George Kemp of Eatontown; one sister, Harriet Yard of California; seven grandchildren and seven
great-grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted by the Armitage Funeral Home, 2333 Highway 34, Wall. A funeral service was held in St. James Episcopal Church, Bradley Beach. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mrs. Armitage's memory may be made to the Meridian Hospice Program, 615 Hope Road, Eatontown, 07724.
JUAN NUNEZ, of Bloomfield, died Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2002. He was 69. Born in Palmeira, Spain, he lived in North Arlington before moving to Belleville one year ago. He died in University Hospital, Newark. He was a welder/mechanic for Sea Land Services in Elizabeth Port for 28 years before retiring in 1995. He was a member of Club Espana in Newark and I.L.A. Husband of Amelia; father of Juan, Enrique, and Maribel Nunez; grandfather of Juan, Dante, Sophia and Charles. Funeral services were conducted by the Wilfred Armitage Funeral Home, 596 Belgrove Drive, Kearny. A funeral mass was held in St. Anthony's Church, East Newark. Interment
was in Glendale Cemetery, Bloomfield. In lieu of flowers, donations
may be made to the American Cancer Society.
FRANK M. CICCHINO, of West Palm Beach, Fla., died Sunday, Nov. 3, 2002. He was 87. Born in Newark, he lived in Harrison and East Newark most of his life before moving to West Palm Beach eight years ago. He died at home. He was the owner/operator of Muzzi's Lounge, East Newark, for four years, retiring in 1971. Prior to that, he was a bartender in various restaurants and lounges in Harrison and Kearny. He was Private First Class in the Army during World War II, receiving the following citations and medals: three Purple Hearts, wounded in action, with First and Second Oak Leaf Clusters; three Bronze Star Medals for valor and heroism in ground combat with Letter and First and Second Oak Leaf Clusters; the Presidential Unit Emblem; Distinguished Service Medal; Distinguished Unit Badge; Army of Occupation Medal with German clasp and four stars and Belgian Fourragere. One of his Bronze Stars was awarded for heroic achievement Nov. 26, 1944, near Frenzerberg, Germany. The citation stated disregarding intense enemy fire, advanced 200 yards to the flank, killing three snipers and wiping out a machine gun crew. His courageous action enabled his platoon to continue to advance and reflects high credit upon himself and the Armed Forces. He received First Oak Leaf Cluster to the Bronze Star Medal for exemplary conduct in ground combat against the armed enemy on or about Aug. 9, 1944 in the European Theater of Operations. The Purple Hearts were for receiving wounds while in Gressnich, Kretzhaus and Mossbach, Germany. He was a member of American Legion Post 282, Harrison; V.F.W. Sgt. William Sawelson Post 340, Harrison; West Hudson/Bergen Disabled American Veterans Post 25, Kearny; Harrison Pleasure Club and R-Own Social Club of Harrison. Devoted father of Roxanne Cicchino, Patricia Horrigan and stepfather of the late Ronald and Richard Brogley; cherished grandfather of seven; dear brother of Thomas Cicchino, Laura Konsig, and the late Lou, Joseph, Albert, Anthony, John and Constantine; loving ex-husband of Mildred Mic; uncle to many nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted by the Mulligan Funeral Home, 331 Cleveland Ave., Harrison. A funeral mass was held in St. Anthony's Church, East Newark. Interment
was in Holy Cross Cemetery. Services were also held at V.F.W. Post 340, Harrison; Harrison American Legion Post 282 and the Disabled American Veterans Post 25 of Kearny. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hospice of Palm Beach County, Inc. c/o the funeral home.
ANNE L. FLOCK, of North Arlington, died Thursday, Oct. 24, 2002. She was 89. Born in Harrison, she moved to North Arlington five years ago. She died in West Hudson Hospital, Kearny. She was a medical secretary and supervisor for the State of New Jersey for 10 years before retiring in 1978. Prior to that, she was a secretary for General Electric, Newark, for 20 years. She was a member of the Rosary Society and the Vincentian Society at Holy Cross Church. Surviving are daughters, Maureen Hennessy and Patricia Hillard; sons, Dr. William L. Flock and Joseph and eight grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted by the Condon Memorial Home, 210 Davis Ave., Harrison. A funeral mass was held in Holy Cross Church, Harrison.
ESTHER C. PETERS, of Harrison, died Monday, Nov. 4, 2002. She was 78. Born in East Newark, she lived in Harrison for 25 years. She died in West Hudson Hospital, Kearny. She was a clerk with the Harrison Steel and Metal Co. for 10 years before retiring 10 years ago. She was a member of the Henrietta Benstead Group, Kearny. Surviving are her husband, Joseph J.; a daughter, Mae Angione; sisters, Barbara McCarthy and Margaret Lemke; two grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted by the Condon Memorial Home, 210 Davis Ave., Harrison.
