CHARLES J. HAINES, of Kearny, died Friday, Nov. 8, 2002. He was 71. Born in Newark, he lived in Kearny for 25 years. He died at Comfort Corner Hospice Unit at Oakland Care Center, Oakland. He was a window cleaner for American Window Cleaning in Newark for 25 years before retiring in 1979. Beloved husband of the late Barbara; devoted stepfather of Thomas M. Morgan, Jr. and Kathleen Calabro; dear brother of Albert and Jack. Funeral services were conducted by the Mulligan Funeral Home, 331 Cleveland Ave., Harrison. A funeral mass was held in Holy Cross Church, Harrison. Interment
was in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the National Compassionate Hospice Foundation c/o Mulligan Funeral Home.
JOHN E. MURPHY, of Bayville, died Saturday, Nov. 9, 2002. He was 84. Born in Newark, he lived in East Newark for most of his life before moving to Bayville 20 years ago. He died in Valley Hospital, Ridgewood. He was a truck driver for Pabst Brewery in Newark where he worked for 35 years before his retirement in 1983.He was a parishioner of Holy Cross R.C. Church in Harrison. He served in the Army during World War II and was a participant as a heavy machine gunner with the Battles of Ardennes and Rhineland. He received the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. He talked about his war experiences in technicolor using items he brought back and kept in a box. He would entertain those around him by bringing them out one at a time with vivid recollections and explain their significance in his war experience. At one juncture in his career as a soldier he had an appendix attack on the battlefield in France. The medics moved him across the channel to England where they operated on him. While he was in the hospital, many of his fellow soldiers were killed by a German offensive. Surviving are two sons William J. Murphy and his wife Joann of Wayne and Dennis R. Murphy and his wife Linda of Ocean Gate; two daughters Patricia Gocklin of Kearny and Mary Bonanno and her husband James of Bayville; twelve grandchildren, Scott and Alyson Murphy, Tracey Rizzi, Jill Santana, Linda, Frank and Brian Gocklin, Dennis, Darlene and John Murphy, Maxwell Bonanno; nine great-grandchildren, Mackenzie and Alexandra Rizzi, Ryan and Dylan Murphy, Jordyn and Brandan Lau, Brian Jr., Scott and Hannah Gocklin. His wife Irene Bredamus predeceased him in 1991 and his son, Reverend John E. Muphy died in 1970. Funeral services were conducted by the Vander May Wayne Colonial Funeral Home, Inc., 567 Ratzer Rd., Wayne. A funeral mass was held in Our Lady of the Valley R.C. Church, Wayne. Interment
was in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to the N.J. Veterans Home of Paramus, East Ridgewood Ave., Paramus, N.J. 07652 would be appreciated.
PASHA McGOVERN, of Kearny, died Thursday, Nov. 7, 2002. He was 86. Born in Linwood, Scotland, he lived in Kearny since 1962. He died in West Hudson Hospital, Kearny. He was an engineer for Rolls Royce in Glasgow, Scotland before volunteering in the British Merchant Marine in 1939. Wounded at Dunkirk, he survived the sinking of two merchant ships on which he served during World War II. After the war, he returned to Rolls Royce where he worked until 1962 when he was disabled and emigrated to Kearny. He was a Gold Card member of the Irish American Club of Kearny and a charter member of the Celtic Supporters of Kearny. Beloved husband for 59 years of Catherine (McGirr); devoted father of Brenda Binge, Felix, James, Michael and the late Veronica Painter and the late Rose Marie Mullen; brother of Nellie Haugley; cherished grandfather of 13 and great-grandfather of one. Funeral services were conducted by the Edward T. Reid Home for Funerals, 585 Belgrove Drive, Kearny. A funeral mass was held in St. Cecilia's Church, Kearny.
MANUEL MENDEZ, of Kearny, died Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2002. Born in Ecuador, he lived in Newark before moving to Kearny seven years ago. He died in Mountainside Hospital in Montclair. He owned a wholesale food distributorship and an export banana plantation in Ecuador. After moving to the U.S., he worked for Hoonton Chocolate Co. in Newark for 10 years before retiring in 1980. Husband of Ana (nee Pena); father of Raul, Bolivar, Rufo, Alfredo, Rosa, Wilson and Luis Mendez, Maria Ugiles and the late Teresa Freire-Morales; grandfather of 23 and great-grandfather of 12. He also has many surviving family members in Ecuador. Funeral services were conducted by the Wilfred Armitage Funeral Home, 596 Belgrove Drive, Kearny. A funeral mass was held in St. Cecilia's Church in Kearny. Interment
was in Holy Cross Cemetery.
CAROLINE M. DOBROWOLSKI (nee Chamberlain), of Ellington, Conn., died Saturday, Nov. 9, 2002. She was 90. Born in Irvington, she lived in the West Hudson area of Harrison and Kearny before moving to Ellington, Conn. 13 years ago. She died at Woodlake at Tolland Nursing Home in Tolland, Conn. She was employed as a bookkeeper with Mobile Communications in Newark for 10 years before retiring in 1975. She was a Scout Master with the Girl Scouts of Harrison for many years. She was a graduate of the Coleman Business College of Newark. Beloved wife of Stanley F. Dobrowolski, Sr.; loving mother of John C. and his wife, Kathleen Dobrowolski of Kearny and Charles J. and his wife, Rose Dobrowolski of Ellington, Conn. and the late Stanley F. Dobrowolski, Jr. and Elizabeth Olawski-Schmall; dear sister of Harriett Ward of Maplewood and the late John, Albert Chamberlain and Evelyn Gartner and Bobbie McGee. Cherished grandmother of 13; great-grandmother of 13 and the late Melissa Marie Gray; aunt of many nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted by the Mulligan Funeral Home, 331 Cleveland Ave., Harrison. A funeral mass was held in St. Stephen's Church, Kearny. Interment

FELIX CHINININ, of Harrison, died Monday, Nov. 4, 2002. He was 19. Born in Macara, Ecuador, he came to Harrison two years ago. He worked for the Melenio Cab Co. in Newark for the past two years. Beloved husband of Liliana; devoted son of Felix and Lucia; dear brother of Joel. Funeral services were conducted by the Edward T. Reid Home for Funerals, 585 Belgrove Drive, Kearny. A funeral mass and burial will be in Macara, Ecuador.
THOMAS B. NORTON, of Toms River, died Monday, Nov. 4, 2002. He was 83. Born in Harrison, he moved to Toms River 13 years ago. He died in Community Medical Center, Toms River. He was a second lieutenant in the Army, serving during World War II. He served with the 7th Armored Division in Northern France and was the recipient of two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star. He was a member of the Harrison Police Department for 30 years before retiring with the rank of captain. He was a member the Police Benevolent Association 22, Harrison, and the Knights of Columbus, St. Joseph's Council, Toms River. Surviving are his wife, Catherine; daughters, Madonna Norton and Jacqueline DiSalvo; sons, Thomas and Michael; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted by the Condon Memorial Home, 210 Davis Ave., Harrison. A funeral mass was held in Holy Cross Church, Harrison.
