Phillip L. (Phil) Pittore, 90
Phillip L. (Phil) Pittore, 90, whose lifetime of public service included 24 years as a city commissioner and mayor of Lambertville, N.J., died May 9 at the Hunterdon Care Center in Flemington. Mr. Pittore was a native of Lambertville, where he lived all of his life except while serving in the U.S. Army during World War II. When he returned after the war, his years of employment as an appropriations analyst for the former John A. Roebling and Sons Co. of Trenton, and as superintendent of maintenance and operations for the Delaware River Toll Bridge Commission, helped him develop the skills needed to operate his own businesses, Phil's Shoes and The People's Store in Lambertville. In later years, as mayor, he also used those skills to help transform the river town into one of the most well-known municipalities in New Jersey. "His death is a tremendous loss for Lambertville, " said current Mayor David DelVecchio. "It can be argued that without Phil's leadership and vision, the Lambertville we know today would never have come to be, " said the mayor, who counted Mr. Pittore as a mentor. Lambertville was a little-known mill town in need of improvements when Mr. Pittore was elected. He sought federal funding and advocated city improvements that helped draw more restaurants, businesses, and eventually visitors to the town. Last year the city repaid him for his years of service and dedication by renaming the local courthouse the Phillip L. Pittore Justice Center. Mr. Pittore's tenure in elected office lasted from 1964 to 1982. While a commissioner, he also served as the city's Director of Public Affairs and Public Safety, Director of Revenue and Finance, and Treasurer. He was president of the New Jersey State League of Municipalities in 1982, when he also served as president of the Hunterdon County Municipal Officers, and as a commissioner on the Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission. Prior to running for commissioner, he was a member and president of the South Hunterdon Board of Education and a board member for the Lambertville Public School. He also has served as president of the Lambertville-New Hope Rotary Club, commander of the Lambertville American Legion Toscano Post 120, and on the executive board of the South Hunterdon Chamber of Commerce. He also served as president of the International Bridge Tunnel and Turnpike Association. At the end of his term as mayor, Mr. Pittore was instrumental in changing the city's charter from the commission form of government to its current mayor-council makeup. The grandson and son of Italian immigrants, Maria and Joseph Pittore, Mr. Pittore was proud to serve in the U.S. Army, where he received pre-flight training before being assigned to serve as secretary to the adjutant general of the 2nd Army. While still in the service he came home to Lambertville to marry his high school sweetheart, Bertha Fay Parsons. On Nov. 6, 2013, the couple celebrated 70 years of marriage. In addition to his wife, Mr. Pittore is survived by the couple's four children and their spouses:
