HELEN HERZOG, AGE 88, WOODBRIDGE

Helen Lavelle Herzog died yesterday at Cranford Care Center in Cranford. She was 88.
She was born in Scranton, Pa., and lived in Woodbridge proper and the Port Reading section of Woodbridge before moving to the Iselin section of the township 10 years ago.
She was a communicant of St. Cecelia's R.C. Church in Iselin and a member of the Rosary Society at St. Anthony of Padua R.C. Church in Port Reading.
She was a past president of the Catholic Daughters of America, Court Mercedes, Woodbridge.
Her husband, Carl, died in 1993, and her son, Carl, died in 1936. She also was preceded in death by five brothers, William, Robert, Gerald, Patrick and John Lavelle and two sisters, Marie Coyne and Anastasia Lavelle. A grandson, Joseph Murafsky, died in 1955, and a great-grandson, Ryan Clark, died in 1989.
Survivors are her three daughters, Joanne Koob of Metuchen, Marie Halbert of Woodbridge and Katherine Du Broff of West Orange; 10 grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren.
Services will be 8:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Leon J. Gerity Funeral Home, 411 Amboy Ave., Woodbridge, followed by a 9 a.m. Mass at St. James R.C. Church, Woodbridge. Burial will be in St. James Cemetery, Woodbridge.
HELEN L. ALFIERI, AGE 65, SOUTH PLAINFIELD

Helen L. "Nanny" Doseff Alfieri died Saturday at Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield. She was 65.
She was born in Hoboken and lived in Jersey City, Union City, Old Bridge and Piscataway before moving to South Plainfield five years ago.
She retired in 1994 as a registered nurse after working for St. Peter's Medical Center in New Brunswick and the Old Bridge school system.
Upon graduating in 1953 from the Christ Hospital School of Nursing, she worked as a private duty nurse in the Hudson County area for seven years. She then became employed at St. Peter's, where she held the position of nursing supervisor for more than 30 years.
She held the position of school nurse for 31 years in the Old Bridge schools. Most of her tenure was at the Memorial School in the Laurence Harbor section of the township. She also had worked as a family counselor in the school system for many years.
During her years of work, she pursued her education on a part-time basis. She received a bachelor's degree in nursing and education in 1963 and her master's degree in the late 1970s from Jersey City State College. Until she retired, she had been pursuing a doctorate in psychology.
For a brief time after her retirement, she worked on learning braille and worked with the blind in New Brunswick.
She was a member of St. George Episcopal Church in Helmetta, where she belonged to the prayer group.
She was a member of the education association on the local, state and federal levels.
Surviving are her son, Henry Cordes of Edison; a daughter, Carolyn A. Ackerman of South Plainfield; a sister, Gladys Cordes of Guttenberg, and three grandchildren, Shawn Ackerman of South Plainfield and Patrick and Kristi Cordes, both of Edison.
The funeral will be 9 a.m. Tuesday at the McCriskin Home For Funerals, 2425 Plainfield Ave., South Plainfield, followed by an 11 a.m. funeral service at St. George Episcopal Church. Cremation will be private.
Memorial contributions may be made to the National Foundation of the Blind of New Jersey, 69 Prospect Place, Belleville, NJ 07109, or the Diabetes Foundation at St. Peter's Medical Center, New Brunswick.
JOHN J. CARRAGINO, AGE 77, WOODBRIDGE

John Joseph Carragino died yesterday at JFK Medical Center in Edison. He was 77.
He was born in Hartford, Conn., and lived in the Port Reading section of Woodbridge for the past 38 years.
He was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving as a chief petty officer.
He retired in 1991 from Volvo-GMC Truck Center in South Brunswick, working as a service manager. He previously worked for White Motor Co. in Newark and Hall & Fuhs Inc. of Mountainside.
His brother, Joseph Carragino, died in 1987.
Surviving are his wife of 53 years, the former Anna Brenkach; a son, Thomas M. of Port Reading; a daughter, Diane of Interlaken; two brothers, Robert of Randolph and William of Berkeley Heights, and two grandchildren, Dan and Amy Carragino, both of Port Reading.
Services will be Wednesday at a time to be announced at the Greiner-Costello Funeral Home, Green Street and Barron Avenue, Woodbridge, followed by a funeral liturgy at St. Anthony of Padua R.C. Church, Port Reading. Burial will be at St. Gertrude Cemetery, Colonia section of Woodbridge.
JORDAN MASTRANGELO, AGE: 30 DAYS, CLIFTON

Jordan Olivia Mastrangelo died Saturday. She was an infant.
She was one of the triplets born on Dec. 13, 1997.
Surviving are her parents, Gary and Jessica Abramson; a brother, Matthew Cory; a sister, Samantha Hart; her paternal grandparents, Carmen and Alice of Edison; her maternal grandparents, Norman and MaryAnn Abramson of Yonkers, N.Y., and Toni and Dick Matthews of North Stonington, Conn.
Services will be private and under the direction of the Thomas J. Costello Funeral Home, 200 Cooper Ave., in the Iselin section of Woodbridge.
LESTER J. YANVARY SR., AGE 41, PERTH AMBOY

Lester J. Yanvary Sr. died Saturday at JFK Medical Center, Edison. He was 41.
He was a lifelong resident of Perth Amboy.
He had worked as a cook at Max Dufner Caterers of Perth Amboy.
He had served in the U.S. Army.
He was a Salvation Army volunteer.
He was a member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Perth Amboy.
His father, Stephen Yanvary; his stepfather, Henry Turick; two brothers, John Turick and Willy Yanvary, are deceased.
Surviving are two sons, Lester Jr. and John Henry, both of Woodbridge; three sisters, Linda Burzynski of Perth Amboy, Cheryl Atkin of Long Beach, Calif., and Beverly Drahos of Old Bridge, and three brothers, Roy Yanvary of Hop Bottom, Pa., Glenn Yanvary of Perth Amboy and James Turick of Jamesburg.
Services will be 11 a.m Tuesday at the Gustav J. Novak Funeral Home, 419 Barclay St., Perth Amboy.
Contributions may be made in his memory to St. Peter's Episcopal Church or Ss. Cyril and Methodius National Catholic Church, both in Perth Amboy.
MARY A. SMERECKI, AGE 80, EDISON

Mary A. Smerecki died Saturday at home. She was 80.
She was born in Perth Amboy and lived in Edison for the past 40 years.
She was a homemaker.
Her husband, Edward, died in 1988. Her sister, Josephine Turner, and her brother, Carl Raniere, are deceased.
Surviving are two sons, Martin of Piscataway and Robert K. of Edison; four brothers, Michael Raniere of Edison, Tony Raniere of Eatontown and Dominick Raniere and Anthony Raniere, both of Perth Amboy; two sisters, Tina Radalich of East Orange and Angie Ward of the Parlin section of Sayreville; five grandchildren, and a great-grandson.
Services will be Wednesday at a time to be announced from the Flynn and Son Funeral Home, 23 Ford Ave., Fords section of Woodbridge. Burial will be at Holy Rosary Cemetery, Hopelawn.
MARY FORBES, AGE 91, KEYPORT

Mary O'Donnell Forbes died Saturday at Bayshore Community Hospital, Holmdel. She was 91.
She was born in Ireland and had lived in Brooklyn before moving to Keyport 27 years ago.
She retired 30 years ago after 25 years as an assembly worker with Murray Switches in Brooklyn.
She was a communicant of St. Joseph's R.C. Church, Keyport.
Her husband, William, died in September.
She is survived by her sister, Sarah Gallagher of Scotland and several nieces and nephews, including Ann Callow of Hazlet.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph's Church. Burial will be at Shoreland Memorial Gardens, Hazlet. Arrangements are by the Day Funeral Home, 361 Maple Place, Keyport.
