ANTHONY LUCANTE SR., 90, of Manalapan died Nov. 1, 2002 at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township. Born in Newark, he resided there before moving to Manalapan 27 years ago. He was an auto mechanic at Casey’s Trucking Co., Newark, retiring in 1978. Prior to that, he was a welder for seven years at the Federal Shipyard, Jersey City. He was predeceased by his wife, Natalie Lucante, in 1969; and a son, Jerry Lucante, in 1993. He is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Anthony and Arlene Lucante Jr. of Brick, Joseph and Sandralee Lucante of Courtland, Ohio, and Vincent and Susan Lucante of Howell; a daughter and son-in-law, Joanna and Jimmy Tedesco of Manalapan; three brothers, Jimmy Lucante of Arizona, Natale Lucante of Freehold Township, and Ralph Lucante of Bayville; two sisters, Anna Lucante and Helen Lucante; and five grandchildren. A funeral liturgy was celebrated at Our Lady of Mercy Roman Catholic Church, Englishtown. Interment was at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington.

GEORGE GUNSHEFSKI, 60, of Brick, formerly of Bayonne, died Oct. 27, 2002. Born in Bayonne, he moved to Brick in 1975. He was employed at New York Bell (now Nynex) for 30 years as a telephone technician, retiring in 1992. He served in the Air Force. He was a member of the Brick Knights of Columbus. He was predeceased by his father, Edward; two sisters; and a brother. Surviving are three children, Linda, George and Jaimee Gunshefski; his mother, Eleanor; three sisters, Carol Ponik, Maryann Ruiz and Eleanor Cardone; four brothers, Edward, Robert, Joe and John Gunshefski; and two grandsons. A Mass was offered at Visitation Roman Catholic Church, Brick.

MARGOT J. ORTLEY, 77, of Brick died Oct. 27, 2002 in Church Lane Senior Care Center, Broomall, Pa. She was co-owner and operator with her late husband, Robert, of Mar Bob Inc., a tax and accounting firm in Brick, from 1950 until her retirement in 1987. Born in Luxembourg, she came to the United States in 1948 and settled in Bay Head. She moved to Point Pleasant in 1950, Wall in 1960, and Brick in 1979. Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Glenn R. and Susan Ortley of Springfield, Pa., and Robert W. Jr. and Colleen Ortley of Wall; and three grandchildren, Tarah, Christen and Steven Ortley. Services were held at the Silverton Memorial Funeral Home, Toms River. Interment was in Ocean County Memorial Park, Toms River.

LEONA "LOLA" SHUBERT, 86, of Greenbriar I in Brick, died Oct 27, 2002 at her daughter’s home. She and her husband Charles owned and operated Ye Ole School Inn, Lavallette, for 50 years. She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, Lavallette; the Order of the Eastern Star Seaside-Galilee; and a former member of the Lavallette PTA, the Lavallette Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary and the New Jersey Restaurant Association. She was born in Latvia and came to America when she was 4 years old. She lived most of her life in Lavallette. She and her husband retired in 1977 and moved to Marathon, Fla., returning to live in Brick in 2000. She was predeceased by her husband, Charles, in 1979; and a son, Charles Guy, in 1981. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Pamela V. and James J. Cox of Brick; a nephew; four granddaughters; a grandson; and five great-grandchildren. The Timothy E. Ryan Home for Funerals, Lavallette, was in charge of arrangements. Services were held at Faith Lutheran Church, Lavallette. Interment was in Greenwood Cemetery, Brielle. Memorial donations may be made to Care Alternative Hospice, Cranford.

HELEN E. SMITH, 79, of Brick died Oct. 27, 2002 in Laurelton Village Care Center, Brick. She worked as a secretary for the Colgate Palmolive Co., New York City, for 30 years, retiring in 1964. She was a member of the Lions Head South Women’s Association and the Women’s Golf Club, Brick. Born in New York City, she lived in Jersey City and Belford before moving to Brick 16 years ago. She was predeceased by her husband, Howard, in 1996. Surviving are a sister, Lorraine K. Parent of Cliffside Park; and many nieces and nephews. Services were private. Memorial donations may be made to the Medical Center of Ocean County, Brick Division, Jack Martin Boulevard.

HARVEY C. VARIAN, 86, of Brick died Oct. 28, 2002 at the Medical Center of Ocean County, Brick division. He worked at Kollsman Instrument Corp., Long Island, N.Y.; was a self-employed jeweler and watchmaker; and managed the jewelry department at Sears-Roebuck, Neptune, retiring in 1973. He served in the US Air Force from 1945 to 1947. He was a member of NAWCC Central Jersey Chapter No. 142 for 20 years; the Music Makers Band for six years; and attended St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, Brick. He was born in Mount Vernon, N.Y., and lived in Asbury Park, and Woodside, N.Y., before moving to Brick in 1959. He was predeceased by a brother, Willard Covey Varian. Surviving are his wife, Yolanda; and many nieces and nephews. Services were held at Colonial Funeral Home, Brick. Interment was in Holmdel Cemetery.

MANUEL JOSEPH RAHTJEN, 83, of Brick died Oct. 29, 2002 in Meridian Nursing Home, Brick. He was a mechanical engineer for General Dynamics, Groton, Conn., for five years, retiring in 1989. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of the American Legion and a past commander of the Metuchen post. He was a communicant of St. Dominic’s Church, Brick. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., he lived in Edison and Tampa, Fla., before moving to Brick in 1993. Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Rosalie Antonuccio Rahtjen; a son, Peter Manuel Rahtjen of Toms River; a daughter, Barbara Breese of Brick; two sisters, Lola Connell and Gertrude McKenna, both of Connecticut; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Services were held at Herbertsville Colonial Funeral Home, Brick. Interment was in Brig. Gen. William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Arnytown.
