John J. Schettino
John J. Schettino, 76, of Fanwood died on Friday, March 13, 1998 in Union Hospital. Born in Newark, he had lived in Plainfield before moving to Fanwood in 1954. Mr. Schettino had been the Postmaster of Short Hills from 1966 until his retirement in 1983. He simultaneously served as Postmaster of Fanwood from 1966 to 1972. From 1949 to 1966, he had been the health officer for Plainfield. Mr. Schettino was a veteran of World War II and a member of the American Legion Post No. 209 of Scotch Plains. Surviving are his wife, Joanne Schettino; two daughters, Judith A. Schettino and Janet M. Sully, and three grandchildren. A Funeral Mass was offered on Tuesday, March 17, at St. Bartholomew the Apostle Roman Catholic Church in Scotch Plains. Arrangements were handled by the Rossi Funeral Home in Scotch Plains.

Mary L. Frank, 90
Mary L. Frank, 90, of Fanwood died on Thursday, March 12, 1998 in Villa Maria in North Plainfield. Born in Jersey City, she had lived in Deal and Basking Ridge before moving to Fanwood in 1995. Mrs. Frank had been a telephone operator for the Cunard Shipping Company in New York for many years prior to retiring in 1955. Surviving are a daughter, Clare Egan; three grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. A Funeral Mass was offered on Saturday, March 14, at St. Bartholomew the Apostle Roman Catholic Church in Scotch Plains. Arrangements were handled by the Rossi Funeral Home in Scotch Plains.

E. Margaret Burgess
E. Margaret Burgess, 88, of Shirley, New York, formerly of Scotch Plains, died on Tuesday, March 10, 1998, at Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip, New York Born in Paterson, she had lived in Scotch Plains for many years before moving to Shirley two years ago. She was a homemaker and a hairdresser. Mrs. Burgess was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Scotch Plains. Her husband, Charles Burgess, died in 1995. Surviving are a son, C. Walter Burgess of Neshanic Station; a daughter, Phoebe Sharkey of Warren; four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held on Friday, March 13, at the First United Methodist Church. Arrangements were under the direction of the Higgins Home for Funerals in Watchung. Charles Anderson
Charles Anderson, 93, Was Executive; Member of U. S. Golf Association Charles W. Anderson, 93, of Westfield died on Thursday, March 12, 1998, at Overlook Hospital in Summit. Born on November 24, 1904 in Brooklyn, he was the son of August and Augusta Anderson. Mr. Anderson began working at the age of 14 and continued through college at Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute, where he earned a degree in chemical engineering. Following graduation, he had been a research chemist for Standard Oil of New York for two years. He later joined Talhurst Machine Works, a division of American Machine and Metals, Inc., becoming a sales manager within five years. He was named Executive Vice President of the company in 1947 and became President in 1956. In 1961, the firm?s name and corporate identity changed to Amatek, Inc. Mr. Anderson, who was honored in 1962 with a Horatio Alger Award for his career with the company, retired after 40 years in 1968. He was an active member of the Echo Lake Country Club in Westfield since 1949 and was a member of the United States Golf Association. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife of 65 years, Ruth Linnea Anderson in 1995, and his brother, O. Y. Anderson, a Lutheran minister. Surviving are a daughter, Charlotte A. Abell of Novelty, Ohio; three grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 9, in the Chapel of The Presbyterian Church in Westfield. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Gray Funeral Home, 318 East Broad Street in Westfield. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Children?s Specialized Hospital or The Presbyterian Church.

Eva B. Ballin, 89
Eva B. Ballin, 89, of Boca Raton, Florida, formerly of Westfield, died on Thursday, March 12, 1998. She was born in Patterson, New York. Mrs. Ballin was predeceased by her husband, Samuel S. Ballin, in 1990. Surviving are a son, Norman Ballin; a daughter, Harriet Chenitz; two brothers, Seman Richmond and Louis Richmond; five grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, March 17, at the Gutterman- Warheit Memorial Chapel in Boca Raton. Interment took place at Star of David Cemetery in North Lauderdale, Florida.

Josephine P. Rudd
Josephine P. Rudd, 64, of Scotch Plains died on Wednesday, March 11, 1998, in Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield. Born in New York City, she had moved to Scotch Plains in 1964. Mrs. Rudd was a graduate of the Katharine Gibbs School in New York, and of Union County College in Cranford, where she earned an associate degree in business administration. She was the Chief Administrative Clerk for Runnells Specialized Hospital in Berkeley Heights for 28 years. Earlier, Mrs. Rudd had been a legal secretary for the Lord, Day and Lord law firm in New York City and then for the Mead, Gleason-Hansen Y. Pantagis law firm in Newark. She was an officer of the Mount St. Mary Mercy Guild and a volunteer at Mount St. Mary?s McAuley Hall, both of Watchung, and a volunteer for the Girl Scouts in Scotch Plains. Surviving are her husband, Willard F. Rudd; a daughter, Kathleen R. Orndorff, and two sisters, Kathleen Trenchak and Harriet S. Wall. A Funeral Mass was offered on Monday, March 16, at St. Bartholomew the Apostle Roman Catholic Church in Scotch Plains. Arrangements were handled by the Rossi Funeral Home in Scotch Plains.

Mary C. Goss, 67
Mary C. Goss, 67, of the Meyersville section of Long Hill Township died on Friday, March 13, 1998, at Morristown Memorial Hospital. Born in East Orange, Mrs. Goss had lived in Meyersville for 33 years. She attended St. Elizabeth?s College and received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English from Seton Hall University in South Orange. Mrs. Goss was associated with her husband in the Robert B. Goss Realty Agency in Manville for 15 years. She was a member of the Republican Club and the Senior Citizens Club in Long Hill. Surviving are her husband, Robert B. Goss; four sisters, Anne Mederer of Fanwood, Veronica Kelly of Riverside, Illinois, Catherine Shea of Skokie, Illinois, and Margaret Kain of New York City, and a brother, Joseph J. McHugh of Parsippany. Funeral services were held on Monday, March 16, at the Valley Memorial Funeral Home in Gillette. Memorial contributions may be made to the Long Hill First Aid Squad, P.O.
