Raymond W. Bauer, 85, of Hightstown died on Thursday, February 1, at home. Born and raised in Linden, he had lived in Westfield before moving to Hightstown three and a half years ago. Mr. Bauer joined Linden Trust Company of Linden in 1944, later becoming its President. When Linden Trust Company merged with Union County Trust Company of Elizabeth in 1961, he was named President and Chief Executive Officer of the combined institution. He continued to lead the new institution, United Counties Trust Company, until 1980. Mr. Bauer subsequently served as its Chairman of the Board and Chairman of the Executive Committee until his retirement in 1988. Until shortly before his death, he was also President and Director of C. H. Winans Company, a family-owned construction and investment corporation based in Roselle. He held volunteer leadership positions in Junior Achievement of Union County, Inc., YMCA of Eastern Union County, the Tri Hospital Fund of Elizabeth, the Deborah League ofElizabeth and the American Cancer Society. A graduate of Linden High School, Mr. Bauer received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1937 from Dartmouth College in Hanover, N.H., and his Master of Business Administration Degree from the Amos Tuck School of Finance in 1938. He earned a Bachelor of Law Degree from the Rutgers University Law School and was admitted to the New Jersey Bar Association in 1942. Mr. Bauer was an active member for many years of the Baltusrol Golf Club of Springfield and also belonged to the Nassau Club of Princeton. Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Mary Hall Bauer; a son, Eugene Bauer of Madison; two daughters, Patricia Ruud of Auburn, Calif. and Victoria Myers of Newark, Del.; two brothers, Grant Bauer of Bay Head and Robert Bauer of Westfield; a sister, Dorothy Fedor of Summit; four grandchildren and three greatgrandchildren. A private funeral service was held on Tuesday, February 6, at The Presbyterian Church in Westfield. Arrangements were handled by Smith and Smith Funeral Directors in Springfield. Leon Schanker, 85
Leon Schanker, 85, of Westfield died on Wednesday, January 24, in Union Hospital. Born in Elizabeth, he had lived in East Brunswick before relocating to Westfield a year ago. Mr. Schanker had been a manager with Ben Kosberg Paint Company in Elizabeth before retiring. He was a member of the Cranford- Linden Lodge Knights of Pythias. He was predeceased by his wife, Rita Schanker. Surviving are three daughters, Bette Degenflardt, Marilyn Lococo and Ronni Rosenberg; two sons, Eugene Schanker and Hal Roth, and 16 grandchildren. Services were held on Friday, January 26, in the Bernheim-Apter- Goldsticker Suburban Funeral Chapel in Maplewood. The memorial period will be observed at the Degenflardt residence.

Joseph Yancey, 61
Joseph Yancey, 61, of New York died on Thursday, February 1, at Calvary Hospital in the Bronx. Born in Plainfield, he had lived there before relocating to New York 38 years ago. Mr. Yancey worked for the United States Postal Service for 30 years as a supervisor in the Main Office on 34th Street in Manhattan. Surviving are his wife, Miriam Yancey; a stepson, Joel Thomas of Las Vegas, Nev.; two daughters, Lisa Marie Yancey of New York and Jennifer Kay Yancey of Fort Meade, Md.; three sisters, Clara Page of Piscataway and Susie Fields and Mary Briddle, both of Plainfield; three brothers, John Yancey of Plainfield, Charles Yancey of Piscataway and Walter Yancey of Westfield, and four grandchildren. Funeral services were held on Monday, February 5, at the Judkins Colonial Home in Plainfield.

John R. Griffin, 89
John Robert Griffin, 89, of Fanwood died on Wednesday, January 31, at Overlook Hospital in Summit. Born in Johnson, S.C., he moved to Fanwood many years ago. Mr. Griffin had been a crane operator with Volco Brass and Copper in Kenilworth for 35 years before retiring in 1977. He was a deacon, usher and Trustee at the Rose of Sharon Community Baptist Church in Plainfield. Surviving are his wife, Susie Griffin, and a sister, Alene Carr of Buffalo, N.Y. Services were held on Monday, February 5, in the Rose of Sharon Church. Interment took place at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield. Arrangements were handled by the Plinton Curry Funeral Home in Westfield.

Elizabeth Crookall, 86
Elizabeth Crookall, 86, of Apollo Beach, Fla., died on Wednesday, January 24, in Brandon Regional Hospital in Brandon, Fla. Born in Harrison, she had lived in Kearny and Westfield before moving to Florida 20 years ago. Mrs. Crookall had been a clerk with Prudential in Newark before retiring many years ago. She was a member of the American Red Cross in Kearny and Past President of the Roosevelt School Parent- Teacher Association in Kearny. She also was a member of the Women's Club of Arlington and an elder in the First Presbyterian Church of Arlington in Kearny. Surviving are her husband, Henry R. Crookall; two daughters, Jan Clark and Susan Crookall, and two grandchildren. Services were to be arranged.

Catherine D. Mason, 97, Was Active With Local Church and Area Groups
Catherine D. Mason, 97, of Lakewood died on Monday, February 5, at Harrogate in Lakewood. Born in Cranford in 1904, the daughter of Spencer and Florence Damon, she had lived there and in Scotch Plains and Westfield before moving to Lakewood in 1989. Mrs. Mason was active with several local organizations, including the Cranford Service League, the Cranford Dramatic Club and the Bonnie Brae Home for Boys. During World War II, she was a Gray Lady at Camp Kilmer. She was a member of The Presbyterian Church in Westfield. Mrs. Mason was a graduate of Abbott Academy in Andover, Mass. She was predeceased by her husband, Carl Holland Mason, in January of 1965, and by a son, William Mason, and a daughter, Joan Shrier. Surviving are another daughter, Anne Hale of Westfield; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at Harrogate in Lakewood on Monday, February 12, at 2 p.m. Private interment took place at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield. Arrangements were under the direction of the Gray Funeral Home, 318 East Broad Street in Westfield. Ruth Quadenfield, 80
Ruth L. Leamon Quadenfield, 80, of Westfield died on Friday, January 26, at the Ashbrook Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Scotch Plains. Born in Roselle, she had lived there until moving to Westfield in 1956. Mrs. Quadenfield was a past member of the Women's Club of Westfield. She was predeceased by her husband, William E. Quadenfield, in 1998. Services were held on Monday, January 29, at the Dooley Funeral Home, 218 West North Avenue in Cranford. Interment was at Evergreen Cemetery in Hillside.
