Margaret Dickson, 87
Margaret Elizabeth Dickson, 87, of Hagerstown, Md., originally from Westfield, died on Monday, January 22, at home. She had been employed by Borden's Milk Company for 38 years and later retired from Muhlenberg Hospital after 10 years. Miss Dickson was a former volunteer with the Washington County Hospital Auxiliary. She was predeceased by her parents, John and Margaret Bennett Dickson; three sisters, Mary Dickson, Bertha Young and Mabel Seal, and two brothers, John Dickson and Tommy Dickson. Surviving are several nieces and nephews. Graveside services were held on Monday, January 29, at Hillside Cemetery in Plainfield. Arrangements were under the direction of the Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home in Hagerstown, Md. Memorial donations may be made to Community Rescue Service, 110 Eastern Boulevard North, Hagerstown, Md., 21742.

Joseph C. Risch, 48, Commodity Broker For Prudential Securities in New York
Joseph C. Risch, 48, of Mountainside died on Saturday, January 27, at Overlook Hospital in Summit. Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, he lived in Mountainside for the past 20 years. Mr. Risch was a commodity broker for The Prudential Securities in New York City for more than 16 years. He earned a degree from Pace University in New York in 1976 and was a member of the university's Alumni Association. He was a member of the Cocoa Merchants Association, the Green Coffee Association and the National Coffee Association. Surviving are his wife, Marlene Risch; a daughter, Kimberly E. Risch of Mountainside; a son, Steven G. Risch of Mountainside; his father, Albert W. Risch of San Diego, Calif., and a sister, Barbara Chambers of Fort Mitchell, Ky. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. this Saturday, February 3, at the Community Presbyterian Church in Mountainside. There will be no visitation. Arrangements were under the direction of the Gray Funeral Home, 318 East Broad Street in Westfield. Emily H. Tartaglia of Scotch Plains died on Wednesday, January 24, in the Christian Health Care Center in Wyckoff. Born in Brooklyn, she lived in Scotch Plains since 1974. Mrs. Tartaglia was a member of the Scotch Plains Senior Citizens. She was predeceased by her husband, Anthony Tartaglia. Surviving are four sons, Nunzio Tartaglia of Lincoln, Mass., Anthony Tartaglia of Flushing, N.Y., Philip Tartaglia of Plantation, Fla. and Jerry Tartaglia of Franklin Lakes; 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. A Mass was offered on Saturday, January 27, in the Church of the Most Blessed Sacrament in Franklin Lakes, following the funeral from the Vander Plaat Funeral Home in Wyckoff. Joseph Lewis, 83, Notre Dame Alumnus Earned Bronze Star for War Service
Joseph B. Lewis, 83, of Arlington, Va., died on Thursday, April 26, at home. Born in Clarksville, Tenn., he had lived in Westfield from 1962 to 1992. Mr. Lewis had been an executive with the B.F. Goodrich Company, where he was employed from 1939 to 1982, when he retired. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration cum laude from the University of Notre Dame in Notre Dame, Ind., in 1939. Mr. Lewis was also a member of the Notre Dame tennis team and the Monogram Club, as well as a manager of the football team. During World War II, he served in the United States Army Air Corps as an enlisted man from 1942 to 1944, specializing in cryptography with training in intelligence. After graduating from Officer Candidate School, he served from 1945 to 1946 in the China-Burma- India Theater as a Lieutenant. Mr. Lewis was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for his supervision during the entire China Offensive Campaign of more than 65 officers and enlisted men who were engaged in the operation of a message and cryptographic section, handling an average of more than one million coded groups of traffic a month from stations throughout the world. After World War II, he remained in the United States Air Force Reserves until 1958 and during that time was promoted to Captain. Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Caryl Cavanaugh Lewis; a son, Paul Lewis of Arlington, Va.; a daughter, Cathy Lewis of Alexandria, Va.; three sisters and two grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday, April 30, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alexandria. Mr. Lewis was buried at St. Mary's Cemetery in Alexandria with full military honors. Arrangements were handled by the Jefferson Funeral Chapel in Alexandria.

Jean Stephens, 86
Jean MacGregor Stephens, 86, of Plainfield died on Saturday, May 5, at the Country Arch Nursing Home in Pittstown. Born in Dalmuir, Scotland, she came to the United States in 1927. She had lived in Newark and Irvington before relocating to Plainfield 52 years ago. Mrs. Stephens had worked for over 26 years as a secretary for the United States Department of Agriculture in New Brunswick before retiring in 1982. She was a graduate of the Newark Normal School. Mrs. Stephens was a member of the Scotch Plains Baptist Church. She was also a volunteer at Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center, as well as a Girl Scout leader, both in Plainfield. She was predeceased by her husband, Robert T. Stephens, Sr., in 1981. Surviving are two sons, Robert T. Stephens, Jr. of Green Brook and Craig W. Stephens of Clinton; three daughters, Jean S. Mazet of Green Brook, Roberta A. Schroff of Peoria, Ill., and Pamela J. Grausso of Scotch Plains; a brother, William D. MacGregor of Bayville; 11 grandchildren and a great-grandchild. Funeral services were held on Thursday, May 10, at the Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue in Fanwood. Interment took place at Hillside Cemetery in Scotch Plains. Memorial donations may be made to either the Clinton Rescue Squad EMS or to the Green Brook Fire Department EMS.

Harold E. Fortiner, 92
Harold Edgar Fortiner, 92, a former Westfield resident, died on Saturday, May 5, at Granite Farms Estates in Wawa, Pa. Born in Palmyra, he had been an executive at Ciba-Geigy in Summit. Upon his retirement, he volunteered as a consulting executive to factories in the Philippines. Mr. Fortiner was a member of the United Methodist Church of Westfield and the Rossmoor Community Church in Jamesburg. He was also a member of Atlas Pythagoras Lodge No. 10, Free and Accepted Masons in Westfield. He was predeceased by his wife, Ruth E. Corson Fortiner, and a son, Robert Fortiner. Surviving are a daughter-in-law, Priscilla Fortiner of Spanaway, Wash.; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Private arrangements were made under the direction of the Kain Funeral Home in Haddonfield. Memorial donations may be made to the Samaritan Fund at Granite Farms Estates, 1343 W. Pauline Castagna, 90
Pauline Castagna, 90, of Fanwood died on Sunday, May 6, at Union Hospital. Born in Elizabeth, she had lived in Linden for 43 years before moving to Fanwood four years ago. Mrs. Castagna had been employed as an elementary teacher with the Elizabeth school system for 37 years, having last taught at the Abraham Lincoln School prior to retiring in 1974. She received a bachelor's degree from Trenton State College, now The College of New Jersey. She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph Castagna; three sisters, Sarah Zambuto, Carmela Fiorillo and Rose Naimo, and a brother, Paul Segro. Surviving are a daughter, Angela Maggs, and two grandchildren. A Mass was offered on Thursday, May 10, at St. Anthony of Padua Roman Catholic Church in Elizabeth, after the funeral from the Petruccelli Funeral Home in Elizabeth. Interment took place at Rosedale Cemetery in Linden. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Anthony of Padua Church, 853 Third Avenue, Elizabeth, 07202.
