Edward Samuel, 73
Edward Samuel, 73, of Sugar Run, Pa., died on Tuesday, May 8, at home. Born on June 16, 1927 in Raritan Township, he was the son of the late Adam and Josie Gaboski Samuel. He had lived in Neshanic for many years before relocating to Sugar Run in 1991. Mr. Samuel was a retired carpenter. A United States Army veteran of the Korean Conflict, he was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 284 in Whitehouse, the Veterans of Foreign Wars post in Manville, Loyal Order of Moose Lodge No. 1829 of Flemington and the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie No. 2137 of Somerset. Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Virginia Fink Samuel; a daughter, Susan S. Aboul-Nasr of Simpsonville, S.C.; two sons, Edward Samuel, Jr. of Landenberg, Pa. and Joseph Samuel of Westfield; six sisters, Loretta Price and Grace Hashim , both of Florida; Olga Przewoznik, Helen Ference, Virginia Kutiak and Florence Oleniacz, all of New Jersey; a brother, Frank J. Samuel of Pennsylvania, and nine grandchildren. Funeral services were held on Friday, May 11, at the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home in Flemington. Interment was at Neshanic Cemetery in Neshanic.

Joseph W. Perkins, 60
Joseph Wendall Perkins, 60, of Plainfield died on Tuesday, May 8, at Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield. Born in Richmond, Va., he had lived in Westfield before moving to Plainfield 30 years ago. Mr. Perkins was employed by the Plainfield Board of Education as band director and a music teacher. He had previously taught in the Westfield school system. He graduated from Virginia State University in Petersburg, Va. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Westfield, where he was also a member of the Sanctuary Choir, Oratorio Choir and Wesley Singers, as well as a substitute organist. Mr. Perkins was also a member of Stone Square Lodge No. 38 Free and Accepted Masons Prince Hall Affiliation in Plainfield. Surviving are his wife, Janette Perkins; a daughter, Wendi Perkins of Richmond, Va.; two stepdaughters, Brenda Marshall of Upper Marlboro, Md. and Sharon Drayton of Plainfield, and three brothers, Newton Perkins and Hamilton Perkins, both of Richmond, and Morris Perkins of Westfield. A memorial service was held on Saturday, May 12, at the First United Methodist Church. Arrangements were handled by the Judkins Colonial Home in Plainfield.

Mary E. Marhon, 83
Mary E. Marhon, 83, a lifelong Westfield resident, died on Thursday, May 10, in the Morris Hills Nursing Home in Morristown. Mrs. Marhon had been a secretary at Merck in Rahway for many years before retiring several years ago. Surviving are a daughter, Pat Jenkins; a son, John Marhon; a sister, Anne Lesak; five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Services were held on Monday, May 14, in the Dooley Colonial Home, 556 Westfield Avenue in Westfield.

Jennie Aloia Spina, 88, Co-Owned Spina Delicatessen in Westfield
Jennie Aloia Spina, 88, of Palm Bay, Fla., died on Sunday, May 13, at the St. Cloud Health Center in St. Cloud, Fla. Born in Westfield, she had lived there until moving to Palm Bay in 1971. Mrs. Spina was the former owner of Spina Delicatessen in Westfield. She was predeceased by her husband, Santo Spina, in 1973, and by a son, Patrick Spina, in 2000. Surviving are three sons, Ignasio Spina, Santo Spina, Jr. and Leonard Spina; a daughter, Mary Coleman; 15 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. A Funeral Mass was offered on Friday, May 18, in the Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church in Westfield. Interment took place at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield. The Dooley Colonial Home, 556 Westfield Avenue in Westfield, was in charge of the arrangements.

Joan E. Lonergan, 60, of Belle Mead died on Friday, May 11, at St. Peter's Hospital in New Brunswick. Born in Summit, she had lived there before relocating to Belle Mead 10 years ago. She had worked for ARC of Somerset. She was predeceased by a sister, Mary Piraneo. Surviving are four other sisters, Bridget Browne of Scotch Plains, Eileen Russell of Summit, Rose West of Madison and Kathleen Sanguiliano of Fanwood, and two brothers, Dennis Lonergan of Summit and Michael Lonergan of South Plainfield. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered on Tuesday, May 15, in St. Teresa of Avila Roman Catholic Church in Summit. Interment took place in St. Teresa's Cemetery in Summit. Arrangements were handled by the William R. Dangler Funeral Home in Summit. Memorial donations may be made to United Cerebral Palsy and sent in care of the William R. Dangler Funeral Home, 309 Springfield Avenue, Summit, 07901.

Julia Tornambe, 78
Julia Tornambe, 78, of Westfield died on Saturday, May 12, in the home of her daughter, Judith DeAngelis, in Mountainside. Born in Madison, she had lived in Clark before moving to Westfield four years ago. Mrs. Tornambe was a Eucharistic minister and a member of the Prayer Group, the Senior Citizens Club and the choir, all of St. John the Apostle Roman Catholic Church in Clark. She was predeceased by her husband, Michael D. Tornambe. Also surviving are another daughter, Patricia Duprat; a son, Dominick F. Tornambe; five sisters, Florence Priore, Rose Moore, Mary Bishop, Theresa Guerin and Ann Marie Sarno; three brothers, Joseph Matrisciano, Angelo Matrisciano and Louis Matrisciano, and eight grandchildren. A Mass was offered on Tuesday, May 15, at St. John the Apostle Church, following the funeral from the Werson Funeral Home in Linden. Interment was at St. Gertrude's Cemetery in Colonia. Doris Jarvis, 81, Air Corps Veteran; Was Photo Interpretation Expert
Doris Jacobsen Jarvis, 81, of Glenview, Ill., died on Friday, May 4, in the Rosewood Care Center in Northbrook, Ill. Born in Oak Park, Ill., she had been a resident of Fanwood before moving to Glenview. Mrs. Jarvis served as a First Lieutenant in the United States Women's Army Air Corps during World War II as a photo interpretation expert. She was predeceased by her husband, Howard Jarvis, Jr., and by a brother, Albert Jacobsen. Surviving are two sons, Howard Jarvis, 3rd and Tyler Jarvis; a daughter, Lynly Jarvis; a sister, Charlotte Baytus, and four grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 16, at the Lutheran Church of the Ascension in Northfield, Ill. Interment was to be private. Arrangements are under the direction of the N.H. Scott & Hebblethwaite Funeral Home in Glenview. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army, 5040 N.
