Lucretia Moore, 95
Lucretia Crump Moore, 95, of Westfield died on Friday, May 11, at Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield. Born in Petersburg, Va., she lived in Westfield for more than 80 years. Mrs. Moore had been employed as a housekeeper in Westfield for many years. She was a member of the Bethel Baptist Church in Westfield for more than 60 years, where she was an organizer and President of the Flower Club for more than 50 years, as well as a member of the choir. She was also a nurse's aide for the Westfield Community Center Drum and Bugle Corps and a member of Centennial Temple No. 246 Independent Benevolent Protective Order Elks of the World of Westfield. Her husband, Russell Moore, died in 1943. Surviving are a niece and cousins. Services were held on Thursday, May 17, at the Judkins Colonial Home in Plainfield.

Lorraine P. Warden, 72, Worked for Bank; Member and President of Women's Clubs
Lorraine P. Warden, 72, of Macungie, Pa., died on Tuesday, May 15, at Somerset Medical Center in Somerville. Born in Westfield, she had lived in Plainfield for many years before moving to Macungie, Pa. 20 years ago. Mrs. Warden had been employed as a customer service representative for Queen City Bank in Plainfield for many years. She last worked as an executive secretary for Air Products Inc. of Piscataway before retiring several years ago. She was a member of the Junior Women's Club of Scotch Plains and was also a Past President and longtime member of the Federated Women's Club of America in Macungie. She was predeceased by her husbands, Charles L. Barry in 1964, Joseph F. Coleman in 1970 and Robert K. Warden in 1997, and by a daughter, Ellen Barry Mulkeen, in 1985. Surviving are a son, Charles Barry; a daughter, Barbara Barry Goodell; her mother, Honora F. Brown Pfeiffer; a sister, Bernice Phillips, and two brothers, Richard Pfeiffer and James Pfeiffer. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered on Friday, May 18, at St. Helen's Roman Catholic Church in Westfield. Interment took place at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield. Arrangements were under the direction of the Dooley Colonial Home, 556 Westfield Avenue in Westfield. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

John Bachanes, 42
John Bachanes, 42, of Scotch Plains died on Wednesday, May 16, in Rahway Hospital. Born in Newark, he had lived in East Newark before moving to Scotch Plains 12 years ago. Mr. Bachanes was an officer with the Haledon Police Department for the last 14 years. He was a member of Police Benevolent Association Local No. 349 in Haledon. He was predeceased by his parents, Charles and Frances Bachanes. Surviving are four brothers, Charles Bachanes, Frank Bachanes, Joseph Bachanes and Steve Bachanes. Private services were arranged by the Condon Memorial Home in Harrison.

Stanley Jennis, 73, of Westfield died on Wednesday, May 16, at home. Born in Newark, he had lived in Cedar Grove before relocating to Westfield 36 years ago. Mr. Jennis owned the New Dawn Health Shop in East Brunswick. He had previously owned a secretarial school in Elizabeth and, prior to that, the International House of Pancakes in East Brunswick. He was a volunteer with the New Jersey State Division of Consumer Affairs Mediation Office in Newark. He served in the United States Army during World War II. He was predeceased by a sister, Arlene Schwartz. Surviving are his wife, Esther L. Sher Jennis; two sons, Mark Jennis and Paul Jennis, and four grandchildren. The funeral was held on Sunday, May 20, from the Bernheim-Apter- Goldsticker Suburban Funeral Chapel in Maplewood. Interment took place at B'nai Abraham Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to cancer research.

Lisbeth Brodie, 90, Holocaust Survivor; Founded Nursery School at Temple
Lisbeth Brodie, 90, a longtime resident of Westfield and survivor of the Holocaust during World War II, died on Friday, May 18, at home. Born on May 15, 1911 in Poznan, Poland, she had briefly worked as a journalist before she and her mother were sent to the Warsaw Ghetto in 1942. While there, she was forced to worked 16-hour days reading English and Polish documents and translating them for the Germans. As she later recalled in her memoirs, she would on occasion intentionally mis-translate documents in an attempt to save lives or retaliate against the Germans. After the Germans eliminated the Warsaw Ghetto and deported the prisoners, Miss Brodie was sent to a camp in Berlin and later to the Theresienstadt concentration camp. She emigrated to New York in 1950, where she worked at a summer camp, and subsequently relocated to Westfield. Miss Brodie earned a bachelor's degree in early childhood development in 1958 from Kean College, now Kean University, in Union. A year earlier, she founded a nursery school at Temple Emanu- El in Westfield, and served as the school's director until her retirement in 1986. Surviving are two cousins, Erica and Tony Matthews of London. Services were held on Sunday, May 20, at Temple Emanu-El.

Virginia Holschuh, 83, Duke Alumna; Affiliated With Library, Theater Group
Virginia Chason Holschuh, 83, of New Providence died on Sunday, May 20, at Overlook Hospital in Summit. Born in Elizabeth, she had lived in Westfield for 58 years before moving to New Providence three years ago. Mrs. Holschuh had been employed as a bookkeeper and secretary for many years by Elsie Betz Realty and Lennox Realty, both of Westfield. She graduated from the Elizabeth school system and attended Duke University in Durham, N.C. Mrs. Holschuh was affiliated with the Westfield Community Players, Planned Parenthood, the Westfield Memorial Library and the American Civil Liberties Union. She was predeceased by her husband, Frank Johnston Holschuh, in 1972, and a grandson, Gary Escobedo. Surviving are a son, Louis William Holschuh of Columbus, Ohio; three daughters, Linda Blair of Edison, Anne Escobedo of Ventura, Calif., and Jane Holschuh of Tucson, Ariz., and five grandchildren. A memorial gathering was held yesterday, Wednesday, May 23, at the home of Robert and Vena Sharer of Westfield. Arrangements were under the direction of the Gray Funeral Home, 318 East Broad Street in Westfield. Memorial donations may be made to the Westfield Memorial Library, the American Stroke Association or Planned Parenthood.

Maxine Bradie, 72 Maxine Bradie, 72, of Mountainside died on Friday, May 18, at Overlook Hospital in Summit. Born in Brooklyn, she had lived in Westfield before moving to Mountainside in 1958. Mrs. Bradie was a member of the Westfield Chapter of Hadassah, the Sisterhood of Temple Emanu-El in Westfield and the Northern New Jersey Branch of the National Jewish Association. She was predeceased by her husband, Mitchell Bradie. Surviving are three sons, Neil, Glenn and Jon, and a sister, Roslyn Denard. Funeral services were held on Monday, May 21, at Temple Emanu- El. Interment was at Beth Israel Cemetery in Woodbridge. Arrangements were under the direction of the Menorah Chapels at Millburn in Union. Memorial contributions may be made to the Westfield Chapter of Hadassah.

Karin S. Schmidt, 41
Karin Sue Schmidt, 41, of Meyersville died on Friday, May 18, at Overlook Hospital in Summit. Born in Glen Ridge, she had lived in Mountainside and Westfield before relocating to Meyersville three years ago. Miss Schmidt graduated from Kean University in Union in 1981 with a degree in education. Surviving are her parents, Werner H. and Eleanor Braun Schmidt, and a brother, Werner H. Schmidt, Jr. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. today, Thursday, May 24, in the Community Presbyterian Church in Mountainside. Arrangements were handled by Smith and Smith (Suburban) of Springfield.

Brenda L. Rizzi, 59, of Berkeley Heights died on Friday, May 18. Born in Garwood, she had lived in Mountainside before moving to Berkeley Heights 30 years ago. Mrs. Rizzi was a member of TRIO, the Transplant Recipients International Organization, Inc. Surviving are her husband of 37 years, Vito L. Rizzi; a son, Steven L. Rizzi of Watchung; a daughter, Denise L. Micca of Manhattan, and two grandchildren. Arrangements were handled by the Valley Memorial Funeral Home in Gillette.
