Michael J. Byrne, 68, of Plainsboro died Friday, September 19, 2014 at home surrounded by his loving family. Born in New Brunswick, NJ he resided most of his life in Plainsboro. He was a United States Navy Veteran. Michael retired in 2008 with over 37 years of service as a plumber with Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory, Princeton. Son of the late Joseph Victor and Harriet (Hines) Byrne, husband of the late Linda J. (Kapalski) Byrne, father of the late Martin J. Byrne, he is survived by a son and daughter-in-law Patrick Byrne and Kelly Schwing, a sister Alice Barr, 4 grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and a dear friend Sheila Bayan. The Funeral Service will be held 12 noon on Wednesday, September 24, 2014 at The M.J. Murphy Funeral Home 616 Ridge Road at New Road Monmouth Junction, NJ . Burial will follow in the Brainerd Cemetery, Cranbury. Friends may call on Wednesday Morning from 10:00 am until the time of the service at the funeral home. M.J. Murphy Funeral Home

Deborah Gibbons 66,
Deborah Gibbons, 66. On May 1, 2014, Deborah passed away at a hospital in Bangor, Maine with her brother at her side after complications from a stroke. She was predeceased by her husband Dr. Felton L. Gibbons, a prominent art historian and professor of art history at Princeton University. She is survived by her brother Charles Strom, her sister Jodi Raphael, and her mother Beatrice Bellows Strom. Deborah Strom Gibbons was born on November 17, 1947 in Syracuse, New York. She majored in art history at the University of Rochester, entered Syracuse University for a master's degree, and won a two-year fellowship to study in Florence, Italy. She transferred to and graduated from Princeton University with a Ph.D. in Italian Renaissance art history in 1979. A passionate bird-watcher, she published two books in that field. In 1988, with her husband Felton, she co-authored Neighbors to the Birds:
A History of Birdwatching in America. In 1989, she published Birdwatching with American Women:
A Selection of Nature Writings. For many years, she was active in the Association of Princeton Graduate Alumni as a board member. She lived on a farm in Hopewell, NewJersey with her husband Felton and later in Princeton and Deer Isle, Maine. Deborah had a wicked sense of humor, strong opinions, and a generous nature. She also supported professional advancement for women, serving as a mentor and advisor to many professional women over the years. In the last several years, Deborah had retired to Stonington, Maine. Although her mobility was limited, she enjoyed reading, visits from friends, watching boats in the harbor and US Open tennis. Please direct donations in her memory to the Audubon Society. Jones

Richard J. (Dick) Casey, Esq., 92
Richard J. (Dick) Casey, Esq., 92, passed away early on the morning of Sunday, September 14th. He was born in New York City on June 12, 1922, son of Edmond and Mary Cody Casey, who had immigrated to the U.S. from Ireland. Edmond was a decorated NYC policeman. Richard was the only boy in a family of four children, and he grew up in NYC with sisters Mary, Elizabeth, and Margaret. He graduated from Regis High School in 1940, and after attending Queens College for a year, enlisted in the U.S. Army. Private Casey graduated with high honors from his training at Plattsburg, and was awarded a transfer to the R.O.T.C. program at Princeton University. After starting at Princeton, he was called into active duty, and he served in Europe as a 1st Sargent as a member of the 16th Armored Division during WW II. After the war he returned to Princeton and found work in the building trades, joining Princeton Carpenters Local 781. Thus began a lifelong passion for building, which he pursued for the remainder of his life. Soon, however, he decided to further his education and was re-admitted to Princeton University. Despite working full time to support a growing family, he completed his degree and graduated from Princeton in 1949 Richard was then accepted into Law School at Fordham University, and still working full time as a carpenter, graduated in 1953. He passed the New Jersey State Bar in 1954. In 2014 he was acknowledged for his 60 year membership in the Association. His 60 year career in the law included being managing director of the New Jersey Building Contractors Association and director of the Central Jersey Building Contractors Association. He served as Councilman and then Mayor of South Brunswick Township in the 1960's. Independently, he maintained an active law practice, and was a trustee on over 150 estates. He was active in the law into his 90's. Richard was also involved in the Princeton and Kingston communities, serving in the Knights of Columbus, as a trustee for Saint Paul's Church, and as a member of the Kingston Volunteer Fire Department. He was married in 1946 to Katrin Palsdottir, and they had four sons --Edmond, Paul, Michael, and Stephen. Katrin passed in 1968. He married Victoria Sailliez in 1969. He was predeceased by wife Katrin in 1968, wife Victoria in 2014, sisters Mary and Margaret and a son Edmond. Richard is survived by his sister Elizabeth Anderson of Toms River, and Paul and Mary Casey of Concord, NH, Michael and Jane Casey of Princeton, and Stephen Casey of Ashburn, VA. He has eleven grandchildren. Visiting hours are from 6 to 8 PM on Friday, September 19, at the Mather Hodge Funeral Home. There will be a Mass of Christian burial at St. Paul's Church, in Princeton, at 9:30 AM on Saturday, September 20. Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to the Senior Care Ministry of Princeton. Mrs. Johanna W. Swart, age 80, of Hoschton, Georgia passed away Monday, September 15, 2014 at Gwinnett Medical Center, following an extended illness. Private Memorial Services will be held at a later date. Mrs. Swart was born August 17, 1934 to the late Johannes and Hendrina Hessen in Haarlem, Holland. She was retired from Lab Glass, where she had worked in Accounts Receivable. Survivors include:

Carmelia "Dolly" DiPierro Tobias, 77
Carmelia "Dolly" DiPierro Tobias, 77 of Monroe Twp. died Friday September 12th at her home.Born in New Brunswick, Mrs. Tobias was a lifelong Monroe Twp. resident. She was a 7th and 8th grade teacher many years ago in the South River and North Brunswick school systems. Mrs. Tobias was a parishioner of St. James RC Church, Jamesburg and a member of the church choir and bible study class. She was a member of the East Brunswick Christian Woman's Club and the Monroe Twp. and Jamesburg Book Clubs. Mrs. Tobias a one of the founders of the Mighty Oak Players of Monroe Twp. She performed with the Stage Crafters of South River, the Trenton Civic Opera Company and was seen on Muddy Waters, a local cable tv show. She was a former member of the Monroe Twp. PTA. Mrs. Tobias was an avid artist and writer of poetry. She was the 1st Miss Jamesburg High School and was the editor of high school Warhoop newspaper. She was predeceased by her brother Louis. Surviving are her husband of 54 years Leonard A. Tobias, her three daughters Joyce Lucignano and her husband Joseph of Monroe Twp., Judith Chuisano and her boyfriend Warren Volk of Monroe Twp., Jeanne Stearn and her husband Bruce of Monroe Twp., her sister-in-law Hermena DiPierro of Monroe Twp. and her six grandchildren Andrew, Stephen and Emma Stearn, Amelia Chuisano and Joseph and Jordan Lucignano. A funeral liturgy was held on Tuesday September 16th at St. James RC Church, Jamesburg with burial at Holy Cross Burial Park, East Brunswick. Lois Brewer Travis
Lois Brewer Travis, wife of Jerry Travis of Pennington, N.J., passed away September 9th. Survived by her husband Jerry of 60 years, her two sons Dale and Brad, her daughters-in- law respectively, Lisa M. Travis and Faith Ligouri, and her grandson Zachary Travis, she worked for the Hopewell Valley School District for 25 years as a bus driver for grade school children and later for handicapped children. She was a founding member of Abiding Presence Lutheran Church in Ewing, N.J.. She was regarded by all who knew her as one of the sweetest, kindest, gentlest and most giving person you would ever have the pleasure to know. Helga Balsterholt, 89
Helga Balsterholt, 89, passed away peacefully at home on September 9, 2014. She was born December 1, 1924 in Germany. Helga married Heinrich Balsterholt. They moved to Chicago with their two sons in 1955. She lived there until she moved in with her daughter and her family in 2002 to their home in Hopewell Township after his death. Helga enjoyed the Pennington Quilters and the Hopewell Senior Citizens Group. Her passion was knitting and crocheting. Many children have been kept warm with the blankets, sweaters, hats and booties she made. Her grandchildren Tod and Dana preceded her in death. Helga is survived by her sons, Werner and Udo, their wives, Ann and JoAnn, her daughter Marlene Burrell and her husband Glenn, her grandchildren, Heath, Erik, Cameron, Angie, James, Justin, and Ashley, her great-grandchildren, Amber, Matthew, Joshua, Jacob, Sean, Dillon, Abby, and Andrew and great-great grands on Ethan. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Peter Lutheran Church 1608 Harbourton-Rocktown Rd, Lambertville September 20 at 9:30am. Karen Vona Menken, 61, of Montclair, previously of Princeton and South Amboy, died Thursday September 4, 2014. Beloved daughter of John and Marie Vona of South Amboy. Beloved sister of Mary Theresa Vona of Mystic, CT and John David Vona of Seattle, WA. Beloved partner of Eric W. Smith, Montclair. She is also survived by two nieces, Mercedes and Ariah Vona of Mystic, CT. Karen will be missed by her family, her many friends and the thousands and thousands of patients she served during her over thirty year career in nursing. Regina 'Ginny' Papstein, 98
Regina, 'Ginny' Papstein, passed away in Hillsborough, New Jersey on August 29th, 2014 surrounded by her family. She was 98 years old. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who gave love and kindness to all who knew her. She was a gifted artist and art teacher who helped many others to love the creative arts. A native of Wisconsin, she came to California in 1939 with her husband Robert Papstein, where they lived for 55 years. Upon his death she moved to Arizona and then to New Jersey to be close to her family. She worked, until her retirement, for the City of Glendale at the Art Center of the Brand Library and the former Fremont Park Arts and Crafts Center where she became Director, teaching courses in ceramics, glass contouring and copper enameling. Her ceramic and glass work was honored with first places at the 1962 Seattle World's Fair. A past president of the Glendale Art Association, she received many awards for her oil paintings. Her funeral was held September 3 at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Skillman. She was buried, next to her husband, in Rocky Hill Cemetery. She is survived by her son Robert of Villarabout, France, her daughter Susan Liporace and her husband, Louis of Belle Mead, New Jersey, granddaughter Andrea Bernard of Winchester Massachusetts and husband Timbre, grandson Nicholas Liporace of Nederland, Colorado and great grandson Nathan Bernard. Natalie Dearborn Cruickshank, 87
Natalie Dearborn Cruickshank passed away quietly in her sleep on August 29, 2014, at the age of 87. She was born in Boston Massachusetts, the daughter of Prof. Walter F. and Ellen K. Dearborn, and was raised in Cambridge, Mass. She graduated from the Beaver Country Day School in Chestnut Hill, Mass., and then from Boston University with an Associates in Commercial Science. Later in life she continued her education at Rider University where she received a Bachelor of Science degree. She began her business career as a secretary in the Boston area, where she met her husband, Philip. They were married in 1953

Vivianne Hooppaw Russell
Vivianne Hooppaw Russell died peacefully at home on August 28, 2014. Born on April 30, 1923 in Providence, R.I., the daughter of Helene Henrietta Louise Girard and Cadle Hooppaw, she grew up in Leesburg, Virginia, graduated from Wilson High School and George Washington University, where she studied under Dean Acheson. She married Norman F.S. Russell, Jr. on June 30, 1951. They met at Saranac in upstate New York. They were married for fifty-five years and raised two daughters while living at Applestone Farm in Ringoes, N.J. Their life together was full of travel which started with a three month honeymoon, driving from Edgewater Park N.J to Panama and back. They explored the globe from Thailand to Antarctica. Following her husband's death in 2006, Vivianne moved to Stonebridge in Skillman where she enjoyed the company of many lifelong Princeton friends. Vivianne was involved in numerous community volunteer activities, loved art, knitting and cooking and treasured her family. Her children have a wonderful collection of sweaters. Her creative inspiration made many events full of color in the community from the Hospital Fete, PDS Spring Fair to the Princeton Neuro-Psychiatric Annual Luncheon. Vivianne is survived by her two daughters, Anne Russell Barrett of Abu Dhabi and Barbara Russell Flight of Dover, Massachusetts, and three grandchildren, Maria Barrett, Casey Flight and Christopher Flight. There will be a private memorial service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Heifer International (www.heifer.org) Every Christmas Vivianne gave many friends and families a goat or chicken to support a family elsewhere in the world.
