Calvin Coolidge Umstead
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Calvin Coolidge Umstead, 75, died May 23.
Born in Crosswicks, he lived in Iowa 15 years before moving to Scottsdale in 1960.
He was an Army Air Forces veteran of World War II.
He worked with Pacific Motor Trucking Co. 20 years and was a farmer in Iowa 15 years.
Mr. Umstead enjoyed bicycling and rode across the country twice.
Brother of the late Arthur, he is survived by two sons, Bruce of Texas and Barry of California; two daughters, Becky and Donna Umstead of Arizona; two brothers, Albert of Roebling, and Richard of Ocala, Fla.; three sisters, Ethel Shrewsberry of Altoona, Fla., Emily Borden of Trenton and Edna Marshall of Mesa, Ariz.; four grandchildren, Marty Joost and David, Kenny and Benjamin Umstead; and other relatives.

Irene Updyke Doran
HAMILTON — Irene E. Updyke Doran, 76, died June 4, at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital at Hamilton.
Born in Morrisville, Pa., she was a longtime Trenton area resident.
She retired in 1993 after 26 years as a clerk with the state Division of Taxation.
She was a member of Ellisdale United Methodist Church, Ellisdale, and the Women of the Moose, Trenton Lodge 164.
Daughter of the late Hubert and Ida Stradling Updyke, she is survived by her husband, William G. Doran Sr.; a son and daughter-in-law, William G. II and Betsy Doran of Columbus; two daughters, Patricia A. Borowsky and Janice M. Doran of Hamilton; two brothers-in-law, Robert Scinto of Hamilton and George Zorn of Port Orange, Fla.; five grandsons; a granddaughter; two great-grandsons; two great-granddaughters; and cousins.
The funeral will be held June 9 at the chapel at Brig. Gen. William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Arneytown.
Calling hours will be 7 to 9 p.m. on June 8 at J. Allen Hooper Funeral Home, 41, W. Trenton Ave., Morrisville.

Blair Clark
CBS News correspondent, executive
Blair Clark of Princeton died Tuesday at The Medical Center at Princeton. He was 82.
Born in East Hampton, N.Y., his family moved to Princeton in 1923 where he attended primary school.
Mr. Clark’s long career centered on journalism and politics, beginning as a reporter for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch in 1940 and including four years as a CBS News correspondent during the mid-1950s. He was campaign manager for Sen. Eugene McCarthy’s bid for the Democratic nomination for president in 1968.
Mr. Clark’s sister, Anne Martindell, of Princeton Township, is a former New Jersey state senator and former U.S. ambassador to New Zealand. His nephew, Roger Martindell, is a Princeton Borough councilman.
Mr. Clark graduated from St. Mark’s School in Southborough, Mass. in 1935 and Harvard University in 1940. At Harvard, he was editor of the Harvard Crimson, the student newspaper, and served as the publication’s president for two years.
While a reporter at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch in 1941, he was drafted into the Army. He worked at various Army publications after being rejected, for medical reasons, for officer candidate school. He eventually was assigned to the Third U.S. Army as deputy historian, taking part in military campaigns in Europe until the end of the war. He was discharged in 1946 with the rank of captain.
He resumed his career in journalism after the war, working as a business manager and treasurer at The New York Star and then as an editorial writer and political reporter for the Boston Traveler and Boston Herald.
In 1952, he worked as press secretary for Averell Harriman in his unsuccessful attempt to obtain the Democratic presidential nomination.
From 1953 to 1956, he was a staff correspondent for CBS News, reporting on France, the Indochina war, European politics and North Africa.
From 1956 to 1960, he was a correspondent and broadcaster of the CBS Radio program “The World News Tonight.” From 1961 to 1964, he was general manager and vice-president for CBS News.
Following his years at CBS, he was a freelance journalist and worked on a book, “The Military in American Politics.”
He was Sen. McCarthy’s campaign manager in his failed attempt to the win the Democratic nomination for president. The Minnesota senator’s campaign during the height of the Vietnam war is largely credited with forcing President Lyndon B. Johnson not to seek another term.
Mr. Clark was editor of The Nation magazine from 1976 to 1978.
Also in 1978, he was Ferris Professor at Princeton University, conducting a seminar on press and politics.
He served on a number of boards and foundations, including the National Committee for an Effective Congress; HUMAN SERVE, a campaign for voter registration reform, the Turtle Bay Association in New York; the Hunter College Foundation; and many others.
Mr. Clark shared residency in Princeton and the Turtle Bay section of Manhattan.
Mr. Clark’s 1942 marriage to Jessie Holladay Philbin ended in divorce in 1960.
Father of the late Cameron Clark; he is survived by his wife, Joanna Clark; sons Timothy of Bethesda, Md. and Ian of Manhattan; stepson, Tomasz Malinowski of Washington; sister, Anne Martindell of Princeton Township; brother, William of Stockbridge, Mass.; nephew, Roger Martindell of Princeton Borough; and seven grandchildren.
The funeral service will be 4 p.m. today at Trinity Church, 33 Mercer St., Princeton. A memorial service will be held in New York at a later date.
Arrangements are by the Kimble Funeral Home, Princeton.

Catherine C. Stecchini
Retired Princeton teacher
Catherine C. Stecchini of Princeton Township, died Wednesday at the Merwick unit of The Medical Center at Princeton. She was 87.
Born in Naugatuck, Conn., she lived in the township 46 years.
She taught for many years in the Princeton public school system, including the Quarry Street School, and retired as chairman of the English department of Princeton High School.
She received her bachelor of arts degree from Connecticut State Teachers College and her master’s degree from Boston University.
She was a member of St. Paul Roman Catholic Church.
She is survived by sons and daughters-in-law Kevin and Linda Stecchini of Hopewell and Brandon and Paula Stecchini of Belchertown, Mass.; and grandchildren Daniel and Samatha of Hopewell.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated 11:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul Roman Catholic Church, 214 Nassau St. Burial will follow at Princeton Cemetery.
There will be no calling hours.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Princeton Education Foundation, P.O. Box 176, Princeton, NJ 08542.

Patricia G. Maxwell
Travel consultant
Patricia G. Maxwell of Princeton, died Monday at home of cancer. She was 81.
She was a well-known travel consultant who arranged more than 18 class trips for Princeton University alumni as well as vacations for hundreds of individuals.
Born in Westfield, she attended Hartridge School and graduated from Bennett Junior College where she majored in art and was a member of the Greek Chorus. An expert horsewoman, she taught riding at Bennett and won several competitions.
Among the firms she was associated with during her 30-year career as a travel consultant were Revere Travel, American Express and Ladd Travel in Falmouth, Maine.
For many years she designed needlepoint canvasses. Her creations were found in the interiors of All Saints Church in Princeton and All Saints Church in Bay Head, as well as many private homes.
She volunteered at The Medical Center at Princeton and co-chaired the Hospital Fete.
She was very active in the Parents Association of Miss Fine’s School, now Princeton Day School, and was a member of the Altar Guild of Trinity Church. She also volunteered at the Children’s Home Society in Trenton.
Her love of music and dance led to leading roles in two Princeton Community Players productions as well as musicals at the Bay Head Yacht Club and the Triangle Club’s “Spring Shambles” at McCarter Theatre.
An avid athlete, she played golf, tennis and squash and was a member of the Pretty Brook Tennis Club, serving on the committee that organized the New Jersey State Squash Championships in the 1950s and 1960s.
She and her husband were one of the first couples in the country to adopt children through the Pearl S. Buck’s Welcome House, which places children of interracial parentage. She compiled a guide for parents contemplating adoption.
She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Sanders Maxwell; daughters Linda Stefanelli of Pennington and Donna Griggs of Aurora, Colo.; sons R.E. Maxwell of Narara, New South Wales, Australia and Robert G. Maxwell of Morrisville, Pa.; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held 2:30 p.m. today at Trinity Church, 33 Mercer St., Princeton.

Nicholas J. Manni
Longtime Princeton resident
CAPE CORAL, Fla. — Nicholas J. Manni died Saturday at Cape Coral Hospital. He was 84.
Born in Monmouth Junction, he worked most of his life in farming and real estate in Princeton before retiring to Cape Coral.
He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II.
He was a member of the Scottish Rite, Masons and Shriners in Princeton.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Jeannette Nanni of Cape Coral; sisters Anna Castner of Edison and Virginia Luther of Plainsboro; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be conducted at a later date at the Metz Funeral Chapel, 1306 Lafayette St., Cape Coral, Fla.

Martha C. Dean
Former West Windsor resident
SYDNEY, Australia — Dr. Martha Ann Chappell Dean died at her home near Sydney, June 4 of ovarian cancer. She was 50.
A former resident of West Windsor, she worked at PA Technology, an international technology consulting firm, as an information analyst.
She grew up in Texarkana, Texas and received her bachelor’s degree from Austin College in Texas.
Married in 1971, she continued her education, receiving her master’s degree from the University of Georgia and her doctorate from Syracuse University in 1980. Her research into the history of experimental psychology using computer analysis of academic journals won high acclaim in her field and is still used to teach courses in the history of psychology.
Dr. Dean joined the Institute for Scientific Information in Philadelphia as a research analyst, and later worked at PA Technology.
In 1989, she migrated with her husband and family to Sydney, where she became an activist in support of the treatment and prevention of child abuse, co-founding Advocates for Survivors of Child Abuse and serving as its newsletter editor. She later served as newsletter editor of the Australian Association of Trauma and Dissociation. She authored numerous articles, the most recent of which was published in “Ethics and Behavior” journal in 1999.
She also served as co-director of Chappell Dean Pty Limited, a management consultancy assisting more than 40 public hospitals throughout Australia and New Zealand to improve patient care and effectiveness.
Diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 1998, she became an activist in the fight against that disease, using Internet discussion groups to highlight the need for early screening.
She is survived by parents Bob and Billie Chappell of Tulsa, Okla.; husband Dr. David Dean; daughter Dorothy of Sydney; son Daniel of Sydney; brothers David Chappell of Petaluma, Calif. and Tom Chappell of Farmington Hill, Mich.; and sister Susan Matthews in Decatur, Ill.

John A. Wilke
Retired from Air Force
PALMETTO, Fla. — John A. Wilke died Sunday.
A native of Newark, he was retired from the Air Force with the rank of lieutenant colonel. Following his retirement from the Air Force, he owned and operated several Mobil service stations in the Somerville area.
He moved to Florida in 1973, working at the U. S. Postal Service while residing in Palmetto.
He joined the Army Air Corps in 1941 and was stationed in the Pacific during World War II. During a 1944 bombing mission, his plane was shot down in the South China Sea and he was rescued by an American submarine.
He flew B-29s during the Korean War and was stationed in North Africa. He trained on and commanded one of the first B-47s in 1957 and in 1963 completed 1,000 hours as a B-47 aircraft commander. He retired from the Air Force in 1964.
He is survived by his wife, Joan Brokaw Wilke; son and daughter-in-law John Jr. and Susie Wilke of Saginaw, Mich.; daughters and sons-in-law Toni and Tom Hierhager of Robbinsville and Jacqueline and Steven Meyer of Wesley Chapel, Fla.; and five grandchildren.
Graveside service will be 10 a.m. today at Harlingen Cemetery, Route 206 South, Belle Mead.
Arrangements are by Speer-Van Arsdale, Funeral Home, Somerville.

Dr. Alphonse P. Palmieri
Area pediatrician
LAWRENCE — Dr. Alphonse P. Palmieri died Monday at St. Francis Medical Center in Trenton.
Dr. Palmieri was chief of pediatrics at St. Francis Medical Center.
Born in Trenton, he lived in Lawrence 33 years. He practiced pediatrics in the area for the past 41 years.
He was a graduate of Trenton Catholic High School, Lebanon Valley College and Georgetown University Medical School.
After completing his internship at St. Francis Hospital in 1954, he served as a lieutenant in the Navy Medical Corps at the Norfolk Naval Base. After his active duty in the Navy, Dr. Palmieri completed his residency in pediatrics in 1959 at the District of Columbia General Hospital, Washington.
He was a fellow and diplomat of the American Academy of Pediatrics and was recognized for outstanding achievement. He was a member of the American Medical Association and the Mercer County Medical Society.
Son of the late John and Maria Palmieri, he is survived by his wife, Jean Immordino Palmieri; sons and daughters-in-law John G. of Tuckerton, Steven of Holland, Pa., Thomas N. and Wendy of Yardley, Pa., and Paul C. and Kim of Titusville; daughter and son-in-law Adrienne and Thomas Barlow of Holland, Pa.; and grandchildren Kyle and Erin Palmieri and Luke, Faith and Cara Barlow.
The funeral was held Thursday.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Francis Medical Center Foundation for Cancer and Cardiac Care Programs or Pediatric Services, 601 Hamilton Ave., Trenton, NJ 08629.

Mary Ellen Nini
Longtime Princeton resident
Mary Ellen Nini of Princeton Township, died June 2 at The Medical Center at Princeton. She was 76.
Born in Waukegan, Ill., she lived and worked in Princeton for more than 50 years.
She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Princeton Engine Company No. 1.
Wife of the late “Peter” A.J. Nini, daughter of the late Allen F. Smoot Jr. and Dorothy B. Smoot, she is survived by brother Dr. Allen F. Smoot III of San Mateo, Calif. and nephews Allen, Paul and Kristian, all of California.
Private services are under the direction of The Mather-Hodge Funeral Home, Princeton.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Ladies Auxiliary of Princeton Fire Company No. 1 or The Princeton First Aid & Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 242, Princeton, NJ 08542 or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
