GERALDINE "GERRY" VAN STEENBURG VAN WAGENEN
GERALDINE "GERRY" VAN STEENBURG VAN WAGENEN, 82, of Snowflake, Ariz., died recently at home. Born in Kingston, N.Y., she lived in Cliffwood Beach, Union Beach and Keyport, before moving to Snowflake 25 years ago. She worked in the housekeeping department of Perth Amboy General Hospital for 10 years before retirement. She was a communicant of First Baptist Church in Snowflake, as well as a member and former Home League secretary for the Perth Amboy Salvation Army Corps. She was predeceased by her husband, Leonard, in 1965, and her son, John, in 1983. She is survived by three sons, Le Grande "Van" Van Wagenen of Parlin, and Leonard and Gerald Van Wagenen of Phoenix; two daughters, Lenore Weber Case and Allian Behr, of Snowflake; two sisters, Margaret Stewart and Mildred Donavan of New York; 21 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. Arrangements were by Carmen F. Spezzi Funeral Home in Parlin, and services were at Shoreland Memorial Gardens in Hazlet.
DOROTHY M. PAUL HUTNIK
DOROTHY M. PAUL HUTNIK, 69, of Hazlet, died June 6 at home. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she moved to Hazlet 33 years ago. She was a teller for PNC Bank, Little Silver, for 10 years before retiring in 1996. She is survived by her husband, Edward Hutnik of Hazlet; two sons, Edward M. Hutnik of Astoria, N.Y., and Andrew G. Hutnik of Hazlet; two daughters, Kathleen M. Buccine of Hazlet, and Sharon A. Connor of Atlantic Highlands; a brother, James A. Paul of Sarasota, Fla.; and three grandchildren. Services were arranged by Day Funeral Home, Keyport, with a Mass at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church in Keyport. Burial was at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Middletown.
ABELINO R. ALVAREZ
ABELINO R. ALVAREZ, 97, of Belford, died June 8 at Arnold Walter Nursing Home in Holmdel. Born in Spain, he settled in Allentown, Pa., and lived in Newark most of his life prior to moving to Belford. He was a foreman for A. Gross and Co., Newark, for 50 years before retiring 25 years ago. He was a communicant of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in New Monmouth. He was a former member/president of the Chemical Workers Union in Newark. He was predeceased by his wife, Mary Lacasale Alvarez, in 1977. He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Ramon and Patricia Alvarez of Kinnelon; a daughter and son-in-law, Loretta and Anthony Garrido of Belford; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Arrangements were by the John F. Pfleger Funeral Home in Middletown. Services were at St. Mary Roman Catholic Church in New Monmouth, and interment was at Holy Cross Cemetery in North Arlington.
ROSE V. SCERRA FIGLIUOLO
ROSE V. SCERRA FIGLIUOLO, 83, of Port Monmouth, died June 10 at Jersey Shore Medical Center in Neptune. Born in Newark, she moved to Port Monmouth five years ago. She was a former communicant of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in New Monmouth, and was a homemaker. She was predeceased by her husband, Rudolph Figliuolo, in 1978. She is survived by two daughters, Renee Troiano of Port Monmouth, and Gail Morris of Rockledge, Fla.; a sister, Mary Ronzo of Hagerstown, Md.; and four grandchildren. Arrangements were by John F. Pfleger Funeral Home in Middletown. Funeral liturgy will be today at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church. Interment will follow at St. Teresa’s Cemetery in Summit.
WILLIAM "WOODY" F. THOMAS
WILLIAM "WOODY" F. THOMAS, 52, of Middletown, died June 3 at Riverview Medical Center in Red Bank. Born in New York City, he previously lived in Dumont and Jackson before moving to Middletown seven years ago. He was a vice president for CoreStates Bank in Toms River for 20 years before retiring in 1993. He served in the Navy during the Vietnam war for four years. He received a B.A. from Rutgers in 1970, as well as a M.B.A. from Monmouth University, and was a member of Phi Sigma Delta fraternity. He is survived by his mother, Maria Thomas of Middletown; and two sisters, Beatrice Toohey of Kinnelon, and Maria Schloeder of Jackson. Arrangements were by the John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, Middletown. Entombment was at Fair View Mausoleum in Middletown.
KATHRYN P. WARD
KATHRYN P. WARD, 48, of Freehold, died June 7 at home. Born in Metuchen, she had resided in Houston, Texas, before moving to Freehold 30 years ago. Mrs. Ward was a real estate agent with Coldwell Banker, Manalapan, for 15 years. She was a communicant of St. Rose of Lima R.C. Church, Freehold, and served on the St. Rose of Lima Sports Committee. She also served on the Board of Directors of the Freehold Pop Warner League. Surviving are her husband, Kevin; two sons, Brian and Jeffrey, and two daughters, Kathleen and Maureen, all at home; her mother, Dorothy Boet, of Jupiter, Fla.; two brothers, Paul Putscher and Noel Putscher, both of Texas; and three sisters, Terry Putscher, of Philadelphia, Pa., Christine Woods, of New Mexico, and Mary Lyn Putscher, of Houston, Texas. The funeral liturgy was celebrated at St. Rose of Lima Church, followed by interment at St. Rose of Lima Cemetery, Freehold Township. The Freeman Funeral Home, Freehold, was in charge of arrangements. Memorial donations may be made to St. John Vianney Scholarship Fund, 540 Line Road, Holmdel, NJ 07733.
CHARLES EMIL BENTIVENGA
CHARLES EMIL BENTIVENGA, 66, of Sayreville, died June 1 in Bayshore Community Hospital, Holmdel. Surviving are his wife, Lois Redman Bentivenga; four sons, Charles Jr. of Old Bridge, Michael of Marriottville, Md., Christopher of Marlboro and Salvatore of Ellicott City, Md.; a daughter, Grace of Flemington; two sisters, Antoinette Arena of Lakehurst and Nancy Beaton of Houston; and 10 grandchildren. Services were arranged by Rezem Funeral Home, East Brunswick, with a Mass at Our Lady of Victories Church, Sayreville. Entombment was in Woodbridge Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
SOPHIE SWOWIK KORDOSKI
SOPHIE SWOWIK KORDOSKI, 87, of Sayreville, died June 1 in St. Peter’s University Hospital, New Brunswick. Her husband, Raymond Kordoski, died in 1962, and a daughter, Margaret J. Lone, died in April. Surviving are three daughters, Genevieve Loprete of Freehold and Mildred Lyman and Elizabeth Kopera, both of the Toms River section of Dover; 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. Services were held at Carmen F. Spezzi Funeral Home, Parlin section of Sayreville. Interment was in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Hanover.
JOHN McCALL, JR.
JOHN McCALL, JR., 75, of Freehold, died May 22 at Jersey Shore Medical Center, Neptune. Mr. McCall, who was one of 13 children, was born in Englishtown and was a lifelong resident of the Freehold area. He was a machine operator for Kimberly Clark, Spotswood, where he was employed for 36 years before his retirement 13 years ago. Mr. McCall was also a union shop steward. He was predeceased by his wife, Josephine DiMartino McCall, who died in 1996. Surviving are three sons, Bruce A., of Freehold, John J., of Colts Neck, and Joseph A., of Newfoundland, Pa.; a daughter, Linda Ann McCall Jones, of Freehold; and four grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the Higgins Memorial Home, Freehold, followed by interment at St. Rose of Lima Cemetery, Freehold Township.
DOROTHY WALLING ANTONIDES
DOROTHY WALLING ANTONIDES, 71, of Freehold Township, died May 27 at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township, after a long illness. Born in Matawan, Mrs. Antonides moved to Freehold in 1957. She had been employed by the Monmouth County Jury Commission before retiring to become a wife and homemaker. Mrs. Antonides was a National Honor Society graduate of Matawan High School. She was a communicant of St. Rose of Lima R.C. Church, Freehold. Her volunteer activities included membership in the St. Rose of Lima School PTA, the Monmouth County Historical Association, both of Freehold; and the Christian Brothers Academy Auxiliary, Lincroft. Mrs. Antonides was predeceased by her mother, Martha Almenas Walling, who died in 1985. Surviving are her husband, William E.; three sons and daughters-in-law, William E. Jr. and Julie Antonides, and John D. and Julia Antonides, all of Freehold, and Frank I. and Grace Antonides, of Pasadena, Calif.; an uncle and aunt, Gerald and Elizabeth Almenas, of Matawan; five grandchildren; and two cousins. The funeral liturgy was celebrated at St. Rose of Lima Church, followed by interment at St. Rose of Lima Cemetery, Freehold Township. The Higgins Memorial Home, Freehold, was in charge of arrangements.
