ROBERT C. REED, 91, of Tinton Falls died Oct. 11 at home. Born in Newark, he lived in Shrewsbury prior to moving to Tinton Falls in 1973. He was a retired sales manager for the former J.H. Kelly Auto Supply Co., Red Bank. An accomplished singer, he studied under Herbert Burtis, was a member of the Shore Operata Guild, and sang with the Apollo Club, Asbury Park. An avid pilot, he was past president of The Jersey Aero Club, as well as a member of the N.J. Power Squadron. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Lillie Heaviland Reed of Tinton Falls; three daughters, Dr. Margretta Seashore of New Haven, Conn., Beatrice Brunstetter of Honeoye Falls, N.Y., and Mardee Reed-Ulmer of Tinton Falls; his brother, Paul E. Reed of Gulford, Conn.; and seven grandchildren. A memorial service was held at the Red Bank United Methodist Church.
HERMAN A. MEYER, 87, of West Palm Beach, Fla., died Oct. 27 at Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., he lived most of his life in Carlstadt prior to moving to West Palm Beach in 1984. He was a retied commodity broker for N.Y. Cotton Exchange for 54 years. He was a member of the Faith Lutheran Church, North Palm, Fla. He was also the past president of the congregation at Emanual Lutheran Church, East Rutherford. He was a past councilman in Carlstadt from 1960-64, and a member of the Free and Accepted Masons of Rutherford. He was also past president of the Girl Scout Council, Carlstadt. He was predeceased by his wife, Greta "Chickie" Wilke Meyer in 1998, and his brother, Edwin A. Meyer in 1974. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Margee Meyer Sr. of Atlantic Highlands; his daughter, Dorothy Lysiak of Little Silver; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Charles A. and Marion Meyer of West Palm Beach, and Robert G. and Shirley Meyer of Cottonwood, Ariz.; his sister, Dorothy Anderson of Essex Junction, Vt.; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. A memorial service was offered at Lutheran Church of the Reformation, West Long Branch.
ISABELLA MARGARET "BELLE" SULLIVAN, 85, of Red Bank died Oct. 28 at home. Born in North Bergen, she resided in Jersey City prior to moving to Red Bank. She was a retired registered nurse in the Jersey City school system, and volunteered at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank, following retirement. She was a communicant of St. James Roman Catholic Church, Red Bank. She served as a nurse with the U.S. Navy during World War II. She was predeceased by her husband, Timothy P. Sullivan in 1981; her brother, Dr. Peter Brady; and four sisters, Grace Menzel, Mildred Hall, Alice Turpning, and Rose Brady. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Timothy P. and Margaret Sullivan of Little Silver; her sister, Margaret Healy of the New Monmouth section of Middletown; her sister-in-law, Virginia Brady of New Monmouth; and three grandchildren. ADELE Q. O’CONNELL, 91, of Little Silver died Oct. 30 at home. Born in New York City, she resided there and moved to Little Silver several years ago. She was a homemaker, and a retired school teacher of the New York City school system. She was a communicant of the Church of The Nativity, Fair Haven. She was predeceased by her husband, James Timothy O’Connell in 1966, former secretary of labor during the Eisenhower administration. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, U.S. Army retired Col. James T. and Pauline O’Connell of Williamsburg, Va.; four daughters and two sons-in-law, Katherine O’Connell of New York City and Little Silver, Ann and Donald Latona of Manalapan, Dorothy Cherry of Louisville, Ky., and Mary O’Connell and Peter Grua of Boston; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. DORIS BOYD, 82, of Rumson died Oct. 31 at home. Born in New York City, she resided in Rumson the past 52 years. Mrs. Boyd was a homemaker. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Rumson. She was a member of the MCOSS, and was a "Grey Lady" of Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. She was predeceased by her husband, Richard, who died in 1984. She is survived by a son, Richard N. of Madison, Conn.; two daughters, Susan Blanchard of Shelton, Conn., and Ellen Boyd of Torrington, Conn.; a sister, Jean Eisemann of Tustin, Calif.; and two grandchildren. MAGDALENE "MIDGE" V. MADISON, 90, of Middletown died Oct. 11 at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. Born in West New York, she resided in several county towns prior to moving to Middletown. She was a member of the Asbury United Methodist Church, Long Branch. She was also the church’s financial recording secretary and member of its Duo Club and bell choir. She was a retired secretary for the River Plaza School, Middletown, for 10 years. She taught German at the Red Bank Senior Center, and was a member of the Retired Teachers Association, Middletown. She was predeceased by her husband, Roy M. Madison Sr., in 1992, and her brother, Harold Weber. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Roy M. and Joan Madison Jr. of Oceanport, and Peter E. Madison and Lorraine Skidmore of Princeton; three sisters, Violet Schmitt and Kitty Welch, both of Arizona, and Marie Rotkewicz of Middletown; two grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. ROBERT E. MURPHY SR., 88, of the Belford section of Middletown died Aug. 14 at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. Born in the Leonardo section of Middletown, he was a lifelong Belford resident. He operated Murphy Towing, Belford. Prior to that, he operated several area gas stations and owned and operated the Flying A gas station. He was employed at Fort Monmouth for 14 years. He served with the U.S. Navy Seabees in the Pacific Theater during World War II. His memberships included the Masonic Lodge No. 172, Middletown Kiwanis Club, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 2179, Port Monmouth section of Middletown. He served as past commander of the Disabled American Veterans and past president of the Middletown Chamber of Commerce, for which he was honored and commended by the N.J. Senate and General Assembly at his retirement dinner. He also served as a special officer, supervisor of the church crossing guards, constable and municipal court officer. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Pauline Clay Murphy of Belford; his son and daughter-in-law, Robert E. and Eileen Murphy Jr. of Middletown; his daughter, Paulette Raub of Tinton Falls; his brother, Raymond Murphy of Hazlet; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
KENNETH C. SMITH, 92, of Keansburg died Aug. 18 in Holmdel. Born in Newark, he lived in Whiting and East Orange before moving to Middletown 24 years ago. He was an electrician for IBEW Local 52, Newark, for 35 years, retiring in 1974. He was a member of the Old Guard of both Red Bank and Whiting, as well as the Knights of Columbus 4th Degree Vince Lombardi Council, Middletown. He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Mary D. Smith of Keansburg; his son, Kenneth E. Smith of Jacksonville, Fla.; his daughter, Kathy Logan of Holmdel; and two grandsons. Entombment was at Holmdel Cemetery.
ADELE E. POREDA COSTELLO, 95, of Tinton Falls died Aug. 23 at King Manor Care Center, Neptune. Born in Jersey City, she lived there until moving to Tinton Falls in 1991. She was employed at Rockefeller Center, New York City, for 35 years, retiring in 1965. She is survived by her son, James J. Costello of Tinton Falls; one niece; two nephews; and several grand-nieces and grand-nephews. Interment
was at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington.
MARGARET M. O’CONNOR PETERSEN, 81, of Rumson died Aug. 26 at home. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she lived in Wilton, Conn., before moving to Rumson 22 years ago. She was a homemaker. She was predeceased by her son, Timothy Edward Petersen in 2000. She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Thomas G. Petersen of Rumson; two sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas G. and Kathleen Petersen Jr. of Greenwich, Conn., and Robert L. and Arlene D. Petersen of Westport, Conn.; her brother, Thomas O’Connor of Strafford, Conn.; her sister, Elizabeth Milton of Cheshire, Conn.; three grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. BARBARA C. REUSS SCHEDLBAUER, 84, of Tinton Falls, died Aug. 11 at Blythe House, Tinton Falls. Born in Schenectady, N.Y., she previously lived in Red Bank and Fair Haven, and moved to Tinton Falls two years ago. She was a homemaker. She was a communicant of Church of the Nativity, Fair Haven. Her interests included spending time with her family, reading, exercise, bird watching and gardening. She was predeceased by her husband, Charles M. Schedlbauer, and three sisters, Marie, Betty, and Magdeline. She is survived by her son, Charles L. of Chatham; three daughters, Barbara A. Grimmer of Fair Haven, Melinda S.
