Bernard Patrick Neary
Spring Lake resident Bernard Patrick Neary died Sunday, March 4, in his home.
He was 80 years old.
Mr. Neary was born on November 7, 1926 in Jersey City, to Bernard and Nora [Murray] Neary. He graduated from St. Michael’s High School in Jersey City.
Mr. Neary served his country in both the air force and the army during WW II in the Pacific theatre. He married
Betty Jane Kenny on August 7, 1948, and then graduated from St. Peter’s College in Jersey City in 1950, with a degree in economics.
Mr. Neary and his wife were longtime members of St. Paul’s, Greenville and later moved to Bayonne. In 1981, they moved to Spring Lake.
Mr. Neary retired from New York Life in 1992 after 30 years. He was assistant vice-president of the Pension Trust Department and a Certified Life Underwriter.
He was also a communicant of St. Catharine’s Church in Spring Lake and served as an usher for 25 years. Mr. Neary also served as the treasurer of the Spring Lake Democratic Club for 15 years.
Mr. Neary was predeceased by his wife, Betty Jane in 1999; his brother, Jack in 1999; and his sister, Margaret Moloney in 2007.
He is survived by his children, Brian Neary, Esq. and his wife Lisa of Ridgewood; Dr. Beth Neary and her husband William Bula of Madison, Wis.; and Bernadette Macko and her husband William of Brielle; eight grandchildren, Claire, Justin and his wife Andrea, Christine, Aedan, Buddy, Liam, Victoria, and Brett; great-granddaughter, Madison; sister, Patricia Witterschein; and brother, Thomas and his wife Pat.
Mr. Neary cherished his family, especially his brother Thomas and Cousin Ellie Wolfe. His Belmar boardwalk gang and Connie Labate were a source of great friendship. He was passionate about Notre Dame and his Irish heritage.
Mr. Neary was a member of the Notre Dame Club of the Jersey Shore and was a recipient of their annual Loyalty Award. He fulfilled his lifelong dream to visit his father’s home in Ballyhaunis, Ireland, in 2000, and meet his Irish cousins, Margaret and Bridgie.
Visitation was held yesterday on Wednesday, March 7 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Neary-Quinn Funeral Home in Manasquan.
A mass of Christian burial is today at 9:30 a.m. at St. Catharine’s Church in Spring Lake. Interment
will be in St. Catharine’s cemetery in Wall.
Stella Klich
Berkeley resident Stella Klich, whose sisters live in Lavallette, died Thursday, March 8 in her home.
She was 84 years old.
Born in Jersey City, Mrs. Klich resided there and in Waretown before moving to Holiday City, Berkeley, nine years ago.
She was employed with the A&P Supermarket, Bayville, for several years before retiring in 1994.
She was predeceased by her husband, Anthony Klich, in 1997; and by her parents, Joseph and Lenora Krajewski.
Surviving are one son, Anthony Klich, Middletown; two daughters, Eleanor Izdebski, Jackson, and Deborah Cox, Toms River; her sisters, Dolores Thurnau, Toms River, and Sophie Bleach and Dorothy Perren, both of Lavallette; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements were from the George S. Hassler Funeral Home, Jackson. Interment
was in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Toms River.
John J. Reynolds Sr.
Brick Township resident John J. “JR” Reynolds Sr., whose daughter lives in Point Pleasant, died Sunday, March 11 in Ocean Medical Center, Brick.
He was 102 years old.
Born in Newark in 1904, Mr. Reynolds lived there and in East Orange and Bloomfield. The family spent summers in Brick before moving there permanently in 1995.
He attended St. Michael's Grammar School and continued his education by attending Essex County Vocational School, Newark.
He was employed with Westinghouse Corp., Newark, until he was accepted as an apprentice by Local No. 52, I.B.E.W., Essex County, and was promoted to journeyman electrician before his 18th birthday. In 1926, he formed the Reynolds Electric Co., with an office and shop on Broadway, Newark. Reynolds Electric Co. later moved to Verona and is now located in East Hanover, under the guidance of the third generation of family members. Mr. Reynolds holds three patents for tools and equipment from the U.S. government.
He was predeceased by his wife, Ellen Barton Reynolds, who he married
in 1929.
Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, John J. Jr. and Patricia Reynolds, Brick, and James Edmund and Dorothy Reynolds, Livingston; one daughter and son-in-law, Margaret Ellen and Richard Copeman, Point Pleasant; eight grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren, three of whom are triplets.
Funeral arrangements were from the Pable-Evertz Funeral Home, Point Pleasant.
Harold Love
Point Pleasant Beach resident Harold Love died Wednesday, March 7 in his home.
He was 86 years old.
Born in Hartford, Conn., Mr. Love was formerly of Hillside, and resided in Point Pleasant Beach since 1955.
He founded Channel Tool Company, Point Pleasant Beach, in 1955 and ran the business until retiring in 1980.
He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the invasion and subsequent battle of Normandy Beach, and earning five battle stars.
Mr. Love was a very active life member of the BPO Elks Lodge No. 1698, Point Pleasant.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Claire; his second wife, Hilda; and his daughter, Mary Weisleder Love.
Surviving are his son and daughter-in-law, Harold "Ole" and Mary Anne Love, Point Pleasant; three grandchildren, Brian, Elizabeth, and Jennifer Love; and a great-grandson, Marc Distlecamp.
Private funeral arrangements were from the Pable-Evertz Funeral Home, Point Pleasant.
Julia F. Wallo
Point Pleasant resident Julia F. Harakal Wallo died Monday, March 12 in Claremont Center, Point Pleasant.
She was 89 years old.
Born in Luzerne, Pa., Mrs. Wallo lived in Edison for over 66 year prior to moving to Point Pleasant.
For 28 years, she was employed as an assembler with Western Electric, now Lucent Technologies, Union.
She was a communicant of St. Francis of Assisi Cathedral, Metuchen, for nearly 50 years.
She was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America
She was predeceased by her husband, Michael.
Surviving are several nieces and nephews, as well as great-nieces and nephews.
Funeral arrangements are from the Pable-Evertz Funeral Home, Point Pleasant. Rite of Committal and entombment will take place at 11 a.m. today in Woodbridge Memorial Gardens.
Helen M. McDermott
Belmar resident Helen M. [nee Cahill] McDermott died Sunday, April 1 at her home surrounded by her loving family.
She was 76 years old.
She was a homemaker and devoted mother, sister and grandmother.
Born in New York, N.Y., she had lived in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. before moving to Belmar in 1982. She was a communicant of St. Catharine’s RC Church in Spring Lake.
Mrs. McDermott was predeceased by her parents, John F. and Mary Catherine Roche Cahill, her husband Hugh Sr. in 1993 and her sister Marion Murphy.
Surviving are her son, Hugh Jr. of Monroe Township; her two daughters, Ellen Santullo of Walkersville, Md., and Mary McDermott Schmidt of Wall; her brother, John F. Cahill of Brick; her two sisters, Irene Hoefling of Fla., and Edna Doscher of Va. and her nine grandchildren Erin, Meghan, Brian, Shannon, Katelyn, Kate, Kerry, Heather, and Kelly.
Committal will be private at the convenience of the family.
Robert J. O’Neill
Spring Lake Heights resident Robert Joseph O’Neill died on Sunday, April 1 at Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune.
He was 88 years old.
Mr. O’Neill worked as a pipe fitter for Exxon at the Bay Way Refinery, where he was a member of the Teamsters Local. He worked there for 26 years before retiring in 1980.
An army veteran of WW II, Mr. O’Neill served in the Pacific Theater.
He was an all-state high school football player at St. Peter’s Prep in Jersey City, and was the team captain his senior year.
Mr. O’Neill is predeceased by his grandson, Timothy P. O’Neill.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Lorraine O’Neill; two sons, John Robert O’Neill of Greenwich, Conn. and his wife Kathy, and Stephen James O’Neill of Issaqual, Wash. and his wife Ellen; a daughter, Maureen Peggy Lawrence of Wall Township and her husband Robert; eight grandchildren, Sean M. O’Neill, Shannon E. O’Neill, Robert S. Lawrence, Kevin P. Lawrence, Michael J. Lawrence, Christopher P. O’Neill, Patrick S. O’Neill and Matthew B. O’Neill.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend funeral service today at 11 a.m. at the Reilly Funeral Home, 801 D St., Belmar.
Interment will be at St. Anne’s cemetery in Wall Township.
Joseph Lionel Fraites
Spring Lake Heights resident Joseph Lionel Fraites, formerly of Watchung and North Palm Beach, Fla., died Thursday, March 29 at his home, surrounded by his beloved family.
He was 87 years old.
Mr. Fraites was born and raised in Brooklyn, the eldest child of Joseph L. and Florence Healing Fraites. He graduated from then Manual Training High School in Brooklyn. At the outbreak of World War II, he enlisted in the armed services and served for the duration in the Army Air Corps as a flight mechanic stationed in the Midlands, England.
Upon discharge, he began his career as a clerk in a sugar trading company in lower Manhattan. During this time, Mr. Fraites attended and graduated from St. John’s University with a degree in finance.
He would spend his entire career in the sugar trading industry, rising meteorically from his first clerkship to president, and then CEO, and finally, owner of the company Czarnikow-Rionda, with offices in New York, London and Hong Kong.
Mr. Fraites was for many years a member of the Board of Directors of the New York Coffee and Sugar Exchange; he served two terms as Chairman of that group. In retirement, he continued to serve the board as a consultant.
Mr. Fraites was a philanthropist. In 1984, he established the Evelyn Svarrer Fraites Foundation in honor of his first wife. The mission of this charitable trust was to provide scholarships for students of Cranford High School who excelled in areas that reflected his late wife’s vocation and interests, primarily in literature and the other liberal arts.
These awards were granted based on merit and need. The scholarship ran for 20 years and today there are 85 Fraites Scholars prominent across many academic fields. Mr. Fraites’ additional philanthropies included the New York Public Library and the New York Philharmonic, among others.
At the time of his death, he was a member of the Spring Lake Golf Club and the Echo Lake Country Club in Westfield. He was also a longtime member of India House, Hanover Square, New York.
Mr. Fraites was predeceased by his wife, Evelyn S. Fraites in 1981 and by his daughter, Ellen Fraites Wagner, in 1995.
He is survived by his wife of 23 years, the former Ellen Maloney Curcio, and by his children, Joseph L. Fraites of Weston, Conn.; Christopher G. Fraites of Westfield and Lisa Dworkin of Far Hills; nine grandchildren, Tatum Fraites, Kristina Fraites, Robert Curcio, Charles Fraites, Graham Dworkin, Amanda Curcio, Adam Fraites, Ellie Dworkin and Lauren Fraites.
Other survivors include his brother Richard Fraites of Bourne, Mass.; sisters Nathalie Scott of Chatham, Mass., and Patricia Ferretti of Brandenton, Fla., and his step-children, Ann C. Gregory of Louisville, Tenn., Paul A. Curcio III of Asbury Park and Joseph A. Curcio of Chatham.
Funeral arrangements are by the Gray Memorial Funeral Home in Cranford.
Burial
will be private.
Contributions in memory of Mr. Fraites may be made to the Joseph Lionell Fraites Foundation, a new trust to be established by his widow.
The mission of this charitable foundation will be to benefit underprivileged youth in the city of Brooklyn with enhanced recreational and cultural activities.
Donations may be sent to Joseph L. Fraites, 41 Hemlock Ridge, Weston, CT, 06883 as interim trustee.
Marie Dugan Finn
Spring Lake resident Marie “Mary” Dugan Finn died peacefully Sunday, April 1 at her home, surrounded by her immediate family and relatives.
She was 74 years old.
She had been under the care of hospice at the time. Mrs. Finn was a loving devoted wife, proud mother and grandmother. She had suffered greatly for many years with numerous illnesses, but still lived each day caring for others.
Born and raised in Bayonne, she had lived briefly in Jersey City and East Brunswick before moving to Spring Lake 33 years ago. She was employed as a supervisor at the Bayonne Naval Base and was a Communicant of St. Catharine’s and St. Margaret’s Parish in Spring Lake.
She was predeceased by her parents, James and Caroline O’Donnell Dugan, and her two sisters, Rose Murphy and Cary Sweeney.
Surviving are her husband of 49 years, Donald M. Finn; her children and their spouses, Donald and Christine Finn of Wall, Kevin and Karen Finn of Ridgewood, Colleen Richmond of Spring Lake and Mary Beth and Kenneth Krauss of Manasquan; her sister Caroline “Cookie” Boyle of Spring Lake; her brother James Dugan of Washington Township. and her six grandchildren Colin Richmond, Kelly and Donnie Finn, Kaitlyn and Kristen Krauss and Shane Finn.
Entombment is at St. Catharine’s cemetery in Sea Girt.
