Jean McEwen Hughes
Spring Lake Heights resident Jean McEwen Hughes died Tuesday, May 1 at her home.
She was 83 years old.
Born in Englewood, she lived in Palisade, Ridgefield Park, Scarsdale, N.Y. and River Edge, before coming to Spring Lake Heights in 1991.
Mrs. Hughes was associated with the IBM Corporation in Armonk, N.Y. for 20 years prior to her marriage in 1968. She was later associated with Brooks Brothers in New York City for 11 years before retiring in 1988. Jean was a graduate of the Academy of the Holy Angels in Fort Lee and the Wood School in New York.
She was a communicant of St. Catharine’s Church in Spring Lake and a Eucharistic minister at that church. She also served as a Eucharistic minister at Jersey Shore Medical Center and was a Meridian Hospice Program volunteer at Jersey Shore Medical Center in Neptune.
She was predeceased by her husband, Bernard Martin Hughes, in 1975; her parents, Ruth and Charles McEwen; and her brother, Robert McEwen, in 1944.
She is survived by her sister, Patricia Cooney of Gladwyne, Pa.; her brother, Charles McEwen of Naples, Fla.; her children and their spouses, Dennis and Mary Hughes of Oakland, Laurence and Marti Hughes of Worthington, Ohio, Dolores and Gary Pollard of New York and Monica and Greg Coleman of Monte Sereno, Calif. She also leaves seven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Visiting is tomorrow from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the O’Brien Funeral Home, Hwy. 35 at New Bedford Road in Wall.
Mass at St. Catharine’s Church in Spring Lake is Saturday at 9:30 a.m. followed by burial at St. Joseph’s cemetery in Hackensack.

Edwin J. Mullen Jr.
Little Egg Harbor and Lake Worth, Fla. resident Edwin Joseph Mullen Jr. died Sunday, April 29. He leaves behind many loved ones, including family in Manasquan.
He was 64 years old.
Born in Queens, N.Y., Mr. Mullen served in the New York City Police Department for 20 years. He was an avid golfer and loved the beach.
Mr. Mullen is survived by three daughters and their spouses, Christina and Joe Testa of Manasquan, Kathleen Mullen of Howard Beach, N.Y., and Laura and Daniel Lopez of Lake Ariel, Pa.; brother John and Barbara Mullen of Brigantine; sister and her husband, Kathleen and Brendan Holihan of Lake Ariel, Pa.; beloved companion Yvonne LeFebvre of Danbury, Conn., and grandchildren, Kevan, Matthew and Abigail.
A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated today at 9:30 a.m. at St. Denis Catholic Church in Manasquan, with burial to follow in St. Anne’s cemetery in Wall.
Neary-Quinn Funeral Home in Manasquan is in charge of arrangements.
Daniel Shalloo
Brick resident Daniel Shalloo passed away Friday at home with his family by his side, after a courageous four month battle with lung cancer. Daniel was very involved with St. Mark’s Church in Sea Girt, and leaves behind many loved ones, including family in Brielle and Spring Lake Heights.
He was 72 years old.
Daniel was a proud veteran of the United States Marine Corp serving during the Korean Conflict. Daniel was a district manager of medical sales for the past 18 years for WA Baum, Copiague, N.Y. He also worked for ReDe Medical, Woodbridge, in sales for several years, and was a West Orange firefighter for 12 years. Daniel and his wife Catherine were very active in St. Mark’s Church, Sea Girt. There, Dan was a Eucharist Minister, member of the Parish Council, Diocesan Council and St. Joseph’s Holy Name Society. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus of Forked River. Daniel was also Trustee Emeritus and Honorary Trustee for the Frances Foundation for Kids Fighting Cancer. Daniel enjoyed cooking, gardening, sailing, reading, Irish dancing, fishing and was an avid hockey fan. He thoroughly enjoyed spending time with his proud and loving family, and will be missed by his companion Rover. He was born in East Orange and raised in the Oranges, before moving to the shore area 32 years ago.
Daniel was predeceased by his parents, Martin and Rose [nee Higgins] Shalloo; step-father Jim Morrissey, and his sister Ruth McNulty.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Catherine Nolan Shalloo of Brick; two sons and two daughters-in-law, Timothy and Kimberly Shalloo of Farmingdale and Daniel and Heidi Shalloo of Brielle; daughter and her fiance, Christine Shalloo and Douglas McKnight of Brick; two grandchildren, Isabel and Nathan; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Ray Shalloo of Spring Lake Heights and Jim and Eleanor Morrissey of Roseland; two sisters and two brothers-in-law, Dorris and Hank Williams of Westend, N.C. and Lorraine and Gerald Maloney of Roseland, and many nieces and nephews.

Roger R. Mullikin
Wall Township resident Roger R. Mullikin passed away Wednesday, April 25 at his home.
He was 76 years old.
Mr. Mullikin was born in Bronx, N.Y. and lived in Staten Island, N.Y. and Manasquan, before moving to Wall Township where he resided for the past 32 years.
He was employed as a service technician for Monroe Calculators in Neptune, where in 1987, he retired after 25 years.
He also belonged to the Army National Guard and was a member of the Central Jersey Rifle and Pistol Club in Jackson and the N.R.A.
Mr. Mullikin is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Carol; daughter Carol Ann Shepard of West Orange; brother-in-law Philip Manzi and his friend Myron Gifford. He was also the loving grandfather of two grandchildren, Taryn-Leigh and Evan.
Cremation will be private.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Johnson-McGinley Funeral Home in Wall Township.

Ruth Dodd
Neptune resident Ruth Kvavik Dodd died April 24 at the King Manor Nursing Home in Neptune. Born in Flekkefjord, Norway to Nickolai and Elisabeth Kvavik, Mrs. Dodd resided in Brooklyn, N.Y. before moving to Avon-by-the-Sea, where she remained until 1971 before moving to Port St. Lucie, Fla.
She was 94 years old.
Mrs. Dodd returned to Neptune in 2005. She was co-owner and office manager of Dodd’s Optimist Fishing Fleet and Dodd’s Marine Basin in Neptune for 30 years before retiring in 1969. Mrs. Dodd enjoyed being with people and hosting parties. She was very active and enjoyed swimming, fishing, bicycle riding, board games and was a very avid reader. Mrs. Dodd was taught the trade of sewing and was a seamstress and nanny when she first arrived in the country. She continued to sew, embroider, crochet and knit; these remained her passion throughout her life. During most of Mrs. Dodd’s retirement years, you could find her volunteering with people in need.
Mrs. Dodd was predeceased by her grandson, Jason Meyer of Philomath, Ore.
Surviving are her two children, Carol Meyer and her husband Ken of Philomath, Ore., and Raymond Dodd and his wife Barbara of Neptune. Surviving also is one sister Karen of Norway, three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Robert McCarthy
Wall Township resident Robert Patrick McCarthy, devoted father, grandfather, fiancé’, brother-in-law, uncle and friend, died Sunday, April 29, surrounded by his loving family at Columbia Presbyterian University Medical Center in New York City.
Robert was born in Hoboken to William and Mae McCarthy. He was a long time resident of Spring Lake before recently moving to Wall Township.
Robert graduated from Xavier High School and Military Academy in New York City and received a bachelor’s degree from Mount St. Mary’s University in Emmitsburg, Md. in 1951.
He served in the United States Army from 1951-1953. He was stationed in Panama and served as a Second Lieutenant during the Korean War and was a member of the U.S. Army’s Office of Counter Intelligence.
Robert had a long and successful career as a sales executive. He spent twenty-five years at National Cash Register [“NCR”] Corporation, continued his career at Western Union and finally retired from Apple Computer in 1998. He was loved and respected by his colleagues and developed many lifelong friendships throughout his career.
Robert was a communicant of St. Catharine’s Church and a long-time member of the Spring Lake Golf and Country Club.
Robert was an avid amateur photographer whose subject matter almost always included his children, grandchildren, the ocean, beach and landmarks in Spring Lake. He will be remembered for his sense of humor and Irish smile, his story telling and love for family and friends. He would frequently be seen walking the boardwalk or talking with friends at Joseph’s Deli in Spring Lake.
Robert was predeceased by his wife of 46 years, Bernice Carey McCarthy, and is survived by his beloved fiancé, Ms. Nan Walsh of Red Bank; his seven children, Patricia Jeffers of Red Bank, Cathy and Paul Morris of Overland Park, Kan., Sharon McCarthy of Washington, D.C., Erin and Tim Crowley of Wall Township, Denise and Robert McCarthy Jr. of Cary, N.C., Cristin and Matthew Krokosz of Wall Township and Kelly and Sean McCarthy of Little Silver; and 14 grandchildren, Paul Morris Jr., Brett Morris, Rachel Morris, Matthew Morris, Kathryn Crowley, Tara Crowley, John Crowley, Alison McCarthy, Robert McCarthy III, Ryan McCarthy, Matthew McCarthy, Carly Krokosz, Jessica Krokosz and Matthew Krokosz Jr.
Friends and family are invited to call today from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the O’Brien Funeral Home, Route 35 at New Bedford Road, Wall Township.
Funeral service is Friday, May 4, at 10:15 a.m. from the funeral home followed by a mass of Christian burial at 11 a.m. at St. Catharine’s RC Church, Spring Lake.
Entombment is at St. Catharine’s Cemetery, Sea Girt.
Ida Huff
Wall resident Ida M. DeVincenzi Huff died on Sunday, Aug. 17 at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, in Neptune.
She was 95 years old.
Born in Kearny, she lived in Freehold, before coming to Wall 41 years ago. Mrs. Huff was employed for many years at Westinghouse in Bloomfield, and later served as a historic interpreter at Allaire State Park in Wall.
She was predeceased by her parents, Domenic and Eugenia DeVincenzi; her beloved husband, Calvin C. Huff; and her son-in-law, Ben Priolo.
She is survived by her daughter, Dorothy Priolo; her son, Douglas Huff and his wife, Rosemary; her grandsons, James Priolo and his wife Debra, and Paul Priolo; and her great- grandchildren, Marisa and Jake Priolo.
Burial

Gertrude Howell
East Brunswick resident Gertrude M. Howell [Ford], who had a summer home in Spring Lake Heights, died peacefully on Aug. 18 at Care One in Wall.
She was 93 years old.
Born July 4, 1915, in Shenandoah, Pa., she was a country girl who was self-taught in business and went on to a highly successful career as a noted Realtor for 45 years. She owned and operated the Gertrude M. Howell Agency Inc. of East Brunswick. She was also a licensed appraiser. She was a very active resident of East Brunswick, serving on the Chamber of Commerce and the East Brunswick Democratic Party as councilwoman for several years. Gertrude, “Trudy” to her many friends, spent many years in Monroe Township, where she raised her three children.
Trudy was predeceased by her daughter, Gloria Breen.
Surviving are her daughter, Lillian Knoblock, of Howell and Jackson; a son, Peter R. Howell, of Brick; and several loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Although she will be sadly missed by her loved ones, she leaves this world having had a long and good life. Her love of her family and friends was expressed in her generosity and caring over the years.
Family and friends will gather today at the Reilly Funeral Home, 801 D St., Belmar, at 9:30 a.m. A funeral service will be held at 10:30.
Interment will be held at Fernwood Cemetery, Jamesburg.
Evelyn Meeder
Spring Lake resident Evelyn Fleming Meeder died on Tuesday, Aug. 12 at her home.
She was 101 years old.
Mrs. Meeder was a resident of Plainfield before coming to Spring Lake in 1947. She was employed as a teacher with the Harrison Board of Education and later taught kindergarten at Wall Central School. She was also a member of the Spring Lake Women’s Club and was a longtime parish member of the Church of St. Uriel the Archangel, in Sea Girt.
She was predeceased by her husband, Frederick H. Meeder; and her sister, Anne J. Fleming.
She is survived by her loving daughter, Edith Annin; and her devoted grandsons, Robert E. DePetro, Jr. and Philip A. DePetro.
Committal was held at Monmouth Memorial Park, Tinton Falls. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Associated Humane Societies, 2960 Shafto Road, Tinton Falls, 07753.
