Arthur DeAngelis
Wall resident Arthur A. DeAngelis died on Saturday, July 19 at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune.

He was 86 years old.

Born and raised in Asbury Park, he lived in Neptune before coming to Wall 37 years ago. Mr. DeAngelis was employed as a newspaper distributor with Jersey Coast News Company in Asbury Park for 50 years before retiring.

A proud U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he served as a tank crewman with the 753rd Tank Battalion and was a member of VFW Harold Daley Post No. 1333, in Asbury Park, and the American Legion Post 346, in Neptune. He was also a member of Asbury Park-Wall Elks Lodge No. 128 and was a longtime communicant of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, in Asbury Park.

He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 63 years, Josephine Ferrara DeAngelis; and his siblings, Sam Perry, Angelina Kadrey, Benny, Lena, Albert and Archie DeAngelis and Theresa Colangelo.

He is survived by his daughters, Joanna M. Mudrick and her husband, Paul A., of Wall, and Barbara A. McGuinness, of Wall; his grandchildren, Douglas McGuinness and his wife, Dianne, Meghan McGuinness and his great- granddaughter, Morgan Rose McGuinness; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Burial was held at St. Catharine’s Cemetery, Wall.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 805 Pine St., Asbury Park, 07712 or Meridian Hospice, 4900 Route 33, Ste. 200, Neptune, 07753.

Theodore J. Raffetto
Longtime Manasquan resident Theodore J. Raffetto died on Tuesday, July 22 at his home in Manasquan.

He was 86 years old.

He was born in the Bay Ridge section of Brooklyn and moved to Manasquan after marrying Vera Raffetto, whose family has been residents of Manasquan since 1907. Ted loved sports and could be found attending many sporting events locally, watching his children and now grandchildren playing recreational, high school and college sports. He also followed his grandchildren in North Carolina and could be found next to a personal computer listening to their sports broadcasts on the Web. Ted graduated from Poly Prep in Brooklyn, where he was an athlete in football, wrestling and baseball and earned All-City and All-State honors in his senior year.

Following Ted’s service in the Army Air Force during World War II, he graduated from Lehigh University in 1949. He was the owner/proprietor of Raffetto Shoes, which has been a landmark in Manasquan since 1909. The business will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2009. Ted’s daughter Carol and son-in-law Joe Hill have continued the family business and tradition, taking over the business in 1990. Ted’s commitment to the Manasquan community was noteworthy, and he served in various capacities. He was always there to help the community he loved so much.

He was one of the founding members of the Manasquan Little League and served as an officer, coach and player agent for over 20 years. He helped build the South Wall Little League field in Wall when the original field was established. Ted had served both as a coach and member of the Manasquan-Brielle Pop Warner program. He was a member of the Big Blue Boosters and acted as president from 1974-1977. In addition, he was a past member of the Manasquan Recreation Commission, where he also served as president and had been a member of the Manasquan Chamber of Commerce. Ted served on the Manasquan Board of Education and was a member of the Manasquan Library Association.

Ted was a communicant and usher of St. Denis Church and a member of the Holy Name Society.

Ted is survived by his loving wife, Vera. They were married 60 years on June 20, 2008. He has five daughters, Lynn Motzenbecker and her husband Bill, Diane Whitman and her husband Skip, Carol Hill and her husband Joe, Nancy Schatzman and her husband Rob, and Joan Marinelli and her husband Rich. Ted has one son, Ted F. Raffetto and his wife Penny. Ted and Vera were blessed with 23 grandchildren, Brian Motzenbecker and his fiancee, Michelle Orr, Justin Motzenbecker and his wife Jenna, Eric Motzenbecker and his wife Kate, Courtney Whitman and his wife Tara, Crista, Clint, Keith and Kyle Whitman, Jason Hill and his wife Stacy, Kate and her husband Craig Shatkus, Kelli Hill, Rob, Megan, Madeline, Stephen, Mark and Shannon Schatzman, Matthew, Erika and Emily Marinelli, and Ted F. Raffetto’s children, Nicholas, Jenna and Sean. In addition to the 23 grandchildren, there are two great-grandchildren, Brandon Hill and Nathan Shatkus.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Neary Quinn Funeral Home, 39 South St., Manasquan.

Funeral services will be held at 8:30 a.m. Friday at the funeral home, followed by a 9:30 a.m. Mass at St. Margaret’s R.C. Church, Spring Lake. Interment will be in St. Catharine’s Cemetery, Wall.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Manasquan First Aid Squad or the Manasquan Police Department. Tributes can be posted at www.mem.com.

Anne B. Powers
Fort Lauderdale, Fla. resident Anne B. Powers, a longtime resident of Brooklyn, N.Y. and Spring Lake, died on July 15.

She was 86 years old.

Anne was a respected teacher of the young, a consummate reader, and crossword puzzle devotee. Her devotion and love will be remembered forever by all who knew her.

She is the beloved sister of Joan, Ruth, Jack, and the late Frank, Mary, Walter, Rita, Honor and Edward.

Burial was held at the parish cemetery, at St. Catharine’s, Wall.

Stanley Lisowski
Brick resident Stanley L. Lisowski died on Friday, July 18 at home with his loving wife of 68 years at his bedside. He leaves behind many loved ones, including family in Wall.

He was 87 years old.

For health reasons, in 2003, he moved back to Brick after living in Largo, Fla. for numerous years. Prior to that, he was a resident of Colonia. He retired from Bobst Champlain in 1982, where he worked as a field service representative, a job and company that he truly loved. Other than work, his main source of enjoyment was working on his fishing equipment and peddling his finished products at the flea markets in Florida. He was a United States Navy veteran, and a member of the VFW.

He was predeceased by his eldest son, Stanley R. Lisowski in 2005.

Stan is survived by his wife, Cecelia; his son, Paul D. Lisowski and his wife, Patricia, of Point Pleasant, and their sons, Jeffrey and Bryan; his daughter-in-law, Joan Lisowski, of Four Seasons, Wall, and their three children, Stash, Steven and Scott Lisowski; as well as eight great-grandchildren.

Robert J. Kochel
Wall resident Robert J. Kochel, formerly of Belmar, died on Thursday, July 17 at home.

He was 22 years old.

Robert went to be with his maternal grandparent’s John and Betty Cobb.

Robert was born in Red Bank and raised in Belmar. He attended Belmar Elementary and graduated St. Rose High School, Belmar.

He earned varsity letters in lacrosse and track while in St. Rose High School, as well as being the class president, a student ambassador, a founder of the Peer Leaders, and a member of the National Honor Society.

Robert attended Boston College and was the president of the Snowboarding Club.

Robert was predeceased by his maternal grandparents, John and Betty Cobb, in 2001.

He is survived by his parents, Kathleen and Robert Kochel, of Wall, a brother, Sean, and two sisters, Alissa and Emma. Robert is also survived by his paternal great-grandmother, Sara Mudd, of Whiting; paternal grandmother, Sara and her husband, George Laird, of Toms River; his paternal grandfather, Robert E. Kochel and his wife, Kibbie, of Reno, Nev.; two uncles and four aunts, John and Kathy Cobb, of Howell, Kevin and Lorrie Kochel, of Jackson, Lindel Woodward and Chrystel Carnahan, both of Reno, Nev.; and several great aunts, great uncles and cousins, and many close friends, especially Rachel, Sam, Lindsey, Mike, Rob, James, Sean and Chris.

Interment was held at St. Anne’s Cemetery, Wall.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made to St. Rose High School, 605 7th Ave., Belmar, 07719 for “Robert J. Kochel Athletic Scholarship Fund.”

Josephine DeMatteo
Spring Lake Heights resident Josephine Fiorenza DeMatteo died on Wednesday, July 16 at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune.

She was 85 years old.

Josephine was born and resided in Brooklyn before moving here 15 years ago. She was a member and communicant of St. Margaret’s R.C. Church, Spring Lake, the Belmar Women’s Club, and the Prime Timers of Belmar.

Mrs. DeMatteo is survived by her daughter, Diana and her husband, Raymond Amoroso, of Brick; three sons, Joseph and his wife, Terry, of Brooklyn, Michael Jr. and his wife Angela, of Glenhead, Long Island, and Steven, of Staten Island; her brother, Saverio and his wife, Edith Ruggerio, of Rome, N.Y.; her sister, Gigi and her husband, Philip Buscemi, of East Islip, N.Y.; and her loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Interment was held at Long Island National cemetery Pinelawn, N.Y.

Harold West MD
Bowling Green, Ky. resident Harold Frederic West MD, formerly of Spring Lake, died on July 18.

He was born in New York, N.Y. on Oct. 31, 1917. He passed peacefully in his home in Bowling Green, after living with a terminal illness for seven years. He served as Western Kentucky University’s medical doctor in Student Health Services for 10 years before retiring at the age of 73. Previously he practiced medicine in Canton, Conn., where he resided with his family for 12 years. He attended Plainfield High School, Wesleyan College and Temple Medical School, with his medical residency at Fitkin Memorial Hospital in Neptune . He received his degree as a Medical Doctor in June 1948. While attending medical school, he served in military service with the U.S. Army, later receiving an honorable discharge. During school years, Harold West pursued his interest in music and athletics and was a member of Temples Phi Beta Pi Fraternity. During his residency, he met his future bride, Stephanie Frank, who worked side-by-side with him as a nurse at Fitkin Memorial Hospital . They married in 1950 and worked together to establish his medical practice in Belmar . He then devoted the remainder of his career as a family doctor to heal others, working with the young and old. Delivering babies including home deliveries and house calls, performing surgery and caring for people of all ages, brought him great fulfillment and joy. He was truly loved and respected by his patients, dear friends and family. His sense of humor, friendliness, love of life and easygoing, optimistic nature were his other great gifts. Dr. West’s personal time and retirement years were spent with family, pursuing his hobbies and volunteer work. His artistic eye created fine photography and handmade furniture. He was an early “ham radio” enthusiast, where he enjoyed conversations with people all over the world, long before the internet. He served as a Board Member of the Brims Museum in Bowling Green, Ky., a hands-on science museum for children. He was active in the Holy Spirit Catholic Church as a volunteer: he was an usher, a Eucharistic minister, he recorded collections, delivered meals to shut-ins, and helped with church computer work and photography. He was a Knights of Columbus 4th degree member, and with his wife was active in Habitat for Humanity. In 2002, he received the Outstanding Senior Citizen Sophia Award with his wife Stephanie. In March of 2004, they received the Knights of Columbus Family of the Month award. He assisted in community blood drives, adopt-a-highway work, and was a member of St. Josephs School 500 Club. He was a lifetime member of the American Medical Association, Temple University Medical Alumni Association, and the Kentucky Medical Association. He served as a member of the New Jersey Medical Association, the Western Kentucky University Alumni Association, the National Rifle Association, the Canton Photography Group, Western Kentucky University Public Radio, and the Federal Communication Commission Amateur Radio Association.

Dr. West is survived by his wife of 58 years, Stephanie Frank West, of Bowling Green; his daughter and son-in-law, Barbara Lynn West and John Risch, of Powhatan, Va.; his son, Thomas Andrew West, of Clinton, and companion Xinjie Lin; brother and sister-in-law, Walter West and Beatrice West, of Inwood, W. Va.; and cousin, Alice Nagel, of Toms River.

He was predeceased by his mother, Letitia Doty West and his father, Thomas West.

His body will be laid to rest at Monmouth Memorial Park in Neptune, where a graveside service is scheduled for Friday, July 25 at 10:30 a.m.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Bowling Green, 5872 Scottsville Rd., Bowling Green, KY 42104 and Holy Spirit Building Fund, 2232 Smallhouse Road, Bowling Green, KY 42104 in his name. The family wishes to express their sincere thanks to the caregivers, friends and hospice that cared for him so well in the years he lived with his illness.

Marialana C. Sirianni
Manasquan resident Marialana C. Sirianni died Sunday, July 20, at Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch, unhappily after a long struggle with cancer.

She was born in Dunmore, Pa., and was a graduate of Hawley [Pa.] High School. She later graduated from Temple University Hospital School of Nursing and became a registered surgical nurse. Her post graduate education followed at Monmouth University, Fairleigh Dickinson and Kean University, earning degrees in school nursing and guidance counseling. She served in both capacities at several schools in the Howell Township School system. Marialana loved working with the children, teachers, parents and staff. She also served as past president of the Newberry PTA, Monmouth County School Nurses Association, and the Howell Township Teachers Association. Her volunteer work involved summer camps for the mentally challenged, and also the Algonquin Theater and Arts Center in Manasquan. She was a member of the American Cancer Society, and St. Denis Catholic Church, Manasquan. Marialana enjoyed meeting new people. She had many friends and cousins who were very good to her. An avid conversationalist and an attentive listener she loved helping people.

She was predeceased by her father, Martin Cerato.

Surviving are her husband, Albie; her mother, Josephine Cerato; two brothers, Michael Cerato and his wife, Donna, and Marty Cerato and his wife, Chris; a special cousin, Anita Durban, who was always there for her; sisters-in-law, Tillie Sirianni and Virginia Donnellon and her husband, Bill; two brothers-in-laws, Steve and Ralph Sirianni; her many loving aunts, uncle and cousins; and 14 nieces and nephews, many of whom she was Godmother to.

A Funeral Mass will be offered 9:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Margaret's Catholic Church, Spring Lake. Interment will follow in St. Anne's Cemetery, Wall.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 801 Broad St., Shrewsbury, 07702.
