HUNTLEY, ALYSSA SHEEHAN
On 27 May 2017 Alyssa ended her fight against Huntington’s Disease at home in Ewing, NJ. Although the disease won in the end, Alyssa gave it a long and courageous fight. She was nine days shy of her 55th birthday.
Born and raised in Springfield, MA, Alyssa graduated from Cathedral High School and received her BA in Foreign Languages from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. After graduation, Alyssa lived in Taiwan and Japan for four years to perfect her language skills before returning to the University of Kansas to earn her MA in Asian Art History. While at KU, Alyssa decided that she wanted to teach high school Chinese and Japanese, so she also earned foreign language teaching certification.
After she graduated from KU, Alyssa and her husband Alan spent almost ten years living overseas in Japan and Israel. While in Japan, Alyssa was certified as a Master of Ikebana (flower arranging), and also studied calligraphy and tea ceremony. She used her teaching skills to teach English and Chinese to Japanese students. While stationed overseas, Alyssa and Alan were able to travel throughout Asia, Europe and the Middle East; an opportunity Alyssa greatly enjoyed. In March 2005 they settled in Ewing, NJ. Alyssa and Alan enjoyed going to Celtic festivals, baseball games, the Shore, and just driving around sightseeing. Alyssa was a member of Abiding Presence Lutheran Church in Ewing, NJ.
Alyssa was a thoughtful, kind, sweet, and generous person who brought joy to all the people in her life. She was adored by all. Alyssa's striking and bold fashion sense expressed her identity: confident yet carefree, unconventional, and featuring beautiful bright hues and designs which spread joy and fun to others. Alyssa found goodness in everyone and beauty in all aspects of life.
Alyssa was predeceased by her grandparents, step-father, mother-in-law, and precious son Colin (who passed away on 23 May 2000). She is survived by her loving husband of 22 years (companion for more than 27 years), Alan of Ewing, NJ; mother Rita Sheehan Bell of Springfield, MA; sister Kathleen Sheehan (spouse Richard Allen) of Springfield, MA; brother Kevin Sheehan (spouse Julie Michalidis) of Roxbury, MA; sister Martha Sheehan of Arlington, MA; father-in-law Alan of East Longmeadow, MA; brother-in-law Bruce (spouse Vanessa) of McDonough, GA; and numerous nephews, nieces, cousins, friends, and her cats.
Alan would like to thank the staff and caregivers of Comfort Keepers in Robbinsville, NJ, but particularly Jacquelyn Wolff who was one of Alyssa’s primary caregivers and friend for more than five years. It was Jacky’s son who said it best- “Don’t be sad, Alyssa’s not sick anymore.”
Donations in Alyssa’s name may be made to The Huntington’s Disease Society of New Jersey (PO Box 2103, Clifton NJ, 07015).
A memorial service will be held at Abiding Presence Lutheran Church (2220 Pennington Rd [Rt 31], Ewing, NJ) on 10 June 2017 at 3PM. Arrangements are by the Wilson-Apple Funeral Home, 2560 Pennington Road, Pennington.
