Denise S. Falkinburg
Denise Suzanne Falkinburg, of Point Pleasant, whose son and daughter-in-law live in Brielle, died on Saturday, March 29 in Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune.

She was 67 years old.

A graduate of Trenton State College, she held a bachelor of arts and masters degree. Mrs. Falkinburg attended Adelphia College in Garden City, N.Y. where she was recognized for her theater workshops.

She held a certificate with the State of New Jersey for a teacher of Speech Arts and Dramatics English. Mrs. Falkinburg was a teacher in Long Branch and an avid antique business owner and dealer.

Surviving is her loving son Darrell Joseph Falkinburg and his wife Virginia Ann, of Brielle, in addition to her two special grandchildren Arielle Laren and Torey Reed Falkinburg.

A Memorial Gathering will be held on Thursday, April 3. from 5-8 p.m., followed by an 8 p.m. service with Rev. Brian Butch presiding at the Johnson-McGinley Funeral Home, 2652 Highway 138, Wall, adjacent to the Route 18 north entrance. Grace E. Paterno
Grace Elizabeth Paterno, of Spring Lake, died on Monday March 31, in Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune.

She was 82 years old.

She was a homemaker. Mrs. Paterno was a communicant of St. Margaret’s RC Church in Spring Lake. She was born in Brooklyn N.Y. and lived in Spring Lake Heights before moving to Spring Lake 48 years ago.

She truly loved her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She devoted every minute of her day down to the last minute of her life making them feel her unconditional love.

Mrs. Paterno was predeceased by her husband William Robert Sr. in 1996, brother and sister in law Jack and Betty Quinn, her brother Robert Quinn and by her sister in law Adelaide Paterno.

Surviving are her six sons and daughters-in-law; William R. Jr. and Barbara, of Germany, Thomas and Cathy, of Brick, Robert and Deborah, of Pt. Pleasant, Michael and Beth of Interlaken, Joseph and Denise, of Wall and Steven and Jill, of Yardville, five daughters and sons-in-law; Carol and Stewart Whitman, of Wall, Susan and Thomas Froehlich, of Spring Lake Heights, Barbara and Mark Clark, of Shark River Hills, Grace and Larry Solomon, of Spring Lake Heights and Catharine and Dwight Beyer, of Bay Head. She also leaves 29 grandchildren, two great grandchildren, a sister-in-law, Joan Quinn of Sayville, N.Y., a brother in law Dr. Charles Paterno of Vero Beach, Fla. and many nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Friday at 11 a.m. at St. Margaret’s RC Church in Spring Lake. Burial will be at St. Anne’s cemetery in Wall.

Donations may be made in her name to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude’s Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

Helen Richards
Cincinnati, Ohio resident Helen Barbara Richards, formerly of Spring Lake Heights, passed away on March 28, in Cincinnati.

She was 89 years old.

She was born in Orange to William C. and Antonia Pospisil.

Helen received her bachelor’s in economics from Upsala College, in 1940. She was a scholar in economics and sociology at Clark University, Worchester, Mass., where she received a master’s in economics in 1942, on a scholarship. Her master’s thesis was entitled: Price Control in Two Wars with Special Reference to the Consumer.

Following graduation, she passed the federal Civil Service Test. Although she was hired by the Department of Commerce she was loaned to the Federal Reserve Bank to work on a special project in Washington, D.C. When the opportunity arose she accepted a job with the Association of American Railroads as a research analyst in New York City.

Helen lived in various cities in New Jersey including Bloomfield, North Caldwell and Spring Lake Heights.

She was an active golfer and chairwoman of the 9-hole group at Glen Ridge Country Club, and later joined the 9-hole group at Spring Lake Country Club. When her husband was living they vacationed in Florida and were active members of Oceanside Country Club in Ormond-by-the-Sea.

At the age of 85, she relocated to Cincinnati to be closer to her daughter. She lived at the Seasons Retirement Community in Kenwood where she made many new friends and was known for her sense of humor and ability to make people laugh. She was a very caring person.

Her beloved husband, Vincent Paul Richards, passed away in 2000.

Helen leaves behind her daughters, Donna [Greg] Park [Cincinnati] and Suanne [Steve] Szempruch [Acworth, Ga.]; grandchildren, Adrienne [Adam] Baier, Kathryn Park, and Christopher and Robert Szempruch; sister, Estelle Berglund; brother-in-law, Charles Richards; and many dear nieces and nephews.

Committal was held at St. Catharine’s Cemetery, Wall.

O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall, was in charge of the arrangements.

Ann A. Groark
Ann Andrews Groark, of Spring Lake Heights, formerly of Bayside, Queens, N.Y., passed away peacefully at the Manor by the Sea in Ocean Grove on Sunday March 30.

She was 92 years old.

Born in Middletown, Conn. in 1915, her family later relocated to Manhattan. She attended Hunter College and worked at Bloomingdales where she met her future husband, Edward. She became the first female executive of Sears Roebuck Company, a position she left in 1945 to rear her two boys Edward and Jon in Bayside, Queens.

She returned to the workforce in the 1950s to be the fashion jewelry buyer for Arnold Constable department stores. Later, working at Associated Merchandising Corporation [AMC] and Tempo, she designed and developed fashion jewelry for Bloomingdales, the May Company, Macys, PC Penny and others.

She traveled extensively throughout Europe for AMC, often staying with the Swarovski family in their castle in Austria.

She was considered a leader in the fashion jewelry industry, creating many style trends. She had a tireless love of life, and especially liked the beach, attending the ballet, opera and exhibitions at the Met.

She loved cooking classes, gardening, rooting for the Mets, playing the stock market and dining at the best restaurants in New York.

Surviving are her two sons, Edward and his wife Sara, and Jon and his wife Terry, and her four grandchildren Amy, Allison, Colin and Katie.

A memorial service will be held at O’Brien Funeral Home, Route 35 at New Bedford Road, Wall on Saturday, April 5, at 11 a.m. Committal will be private.

William R. Sarno
William R. Sarno, of Federal Way, Wash., whose sister lives in Manasquan, died suddenly on Saturday, March 12 at home.

He was 62 years old.

He was predeceased by his mother, Edith K. White, of Manasquan, his father, Alphonse “Dutch” Sarno, his maternal grandmother, Cora E. Knauss, and maternal grandfather William Knauss.

He is survived by his son, William C. Sarno, his wife Laura and grandchildren, Wil and Gabe, of Gig Harbor, Wash.; his daughter Erin Michelle Meline and her husband, Ryan and grandchildren Ella and Abby, of tacoma, Wash.; his former wife and friend, Mary C. sarno and his devoted sister, Donna J. Silk, of Manasquan.

Bill graduated from Wall High School in 1963, then attended the University of tennessee, and formerly served in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was an avid wine connoisseur and collector of art and weapons. His love for books was second to none.

He worked in the flooring industry for 40 years where he made some lifelong friendships. Bill devoted his life to helping others. There truly was nothing that meant more to him than his family and friends whom he lived for each and every day.

He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren creating memories that will always be passed on. He lived life to the fullest and as quoted from his senior high school year book: “Smiling he lived and called life pleasure.”

To his lifelong friends of whom the stories are endless and the friendshipsunfaltering, Bill thanks you for being a part of his life: Robert Hager Sr., in memoriam, Robert Hager Jr., Jerald DeJarlais, Thor Edman, Robert Fuller, Tracey White, David Purcell, James Tomcik, Dick Cierpic and many more.

A memorial service was held Tuesday, March 18 at The Northwest Foursquare Church, Federal Way, Wash.

A memorial service will be held locally at a later date to be announced.

Gloria Collora
Wall resident Gloria F. Collora passed away on Friday, March 28, at Burnt Tavern Manor, Brick.

She was 83 years old.

Mrs. Collora was born in Plainfield and resided in Brielle for 44 years before moving to Four Seasons at Wall.

A graduate of Southern Seminary College in Virginia, she was a member of the Manasquan River Golf Club for 54 years and a long active member of the Eighteen-Holers Women’s Golf Group.

Mrs. Collora was predeceased by her husband of 56 years, Theodore H. Collora, a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and a veteran of World War II; and her son, Theodore William Collora.

Surviving are her daughter, Mary Ann Collora Nordell and her husband, Carl, of Point Pleasant Beach; her brother, Christian Fischer and his wife, Nancy, of Brielle; her brother-in-law, Eugene Collora, of Pensacola, Fla.; her grandchildren, Peter Nordell, of Howell, Carl Nordell III and his wife, Monica, of Manasquan, Carrie Nordell, of Manasquan, and Kristen Collora, of Florida; and great-grandchildren, Ariyonne Collora, Lukas Nordell and Lily Nordell. She will also be missed by her daughter-in-law, Diane Martin.

The family will hold a private ceremony.

In her memory of a great animal lover, appreciated are donations to: Jersey Shore Animal Shelter, 185 Brick Boulevard Brick, 08723.

Neary Quinn Funeral Home, 39 South St., Manasquan, was in charge of arrangements.

J. Albert Fowler
J. Albert Fowler, a longtime resident of Mantoloking, who has a daughter in Brielle, passed away at home on Sunday, March 30.

He was 87 years old.

Born and raised in Orange, he was the son of the late J. Albert and Ruth Fowler. Mr. Fowler graduated from Rutgers University in 1942.

His early career included sales positions with Vick Chemical Co. and Bon Ami Co. He spent over 20 years with the Dupont Co. in Wilmington, Del., where he was a national sales manager of consumer products.

In 1976 he bought Smith Travel in Spring Lake. The business was renamed Sunrise Travel and still operates today in Monmouth and Ocean Counties.

Mr. Fowler was most proud of his work with the Opportunity Center in Wilmington, Del. This organization trained disabled people for employment. He was a founder of the Center and served on its board of directors for 18 years.

He was a member of Point Pleasant Presbyterian Church, Manasquan River Golf Club and Spring Lake Bath and Tennis Club.

Mr. Fowler was predeceased by his wife of 43 years, Emily, a brother Donald Fowler and a sister, Ruth Jean Walcott. He is survived by three children, Carol Crothers of Brielle, Beth Rocheleau and her husband Paul, of Richmond, Va., and Jim Fowler and his wife Eve of Branford, Conn. Mr. Fowler is also survived by seven grandchildren.

Relatives and friends are invited to call Friday from 4-9 p.m. at the Orender Family Home for Funerals, 2643 Old Bridge Road, Manasquan.

A funeral service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Point Pleasant Presbyterian Church. At the request of the family please no flowers.
