Richard L. Cooke
Lakewood resident Richard L. Cooke died Monday, March 24 at Brick Hospital, in Brick. Born in Newton, he lived in Manasquan most of his life, before moving to Lakewood eight years ago.
He was 63 years old.
Mr. Cooke was a logistics management specialist at Fort Monmouth, in Eatontown, for 27 years before retiring in 2004. He was a graduate of Manasquan High School. He was a longtime member of the Manasquan Methodist Church and was past president of the church’s Mens Club; past president of the Indoor Sports Club, in which he also bowled; and a member of the Hi-Wheelers Square Dance Club.
Richard was a member of the Manasquan First Aid Squad and was the corresponding secretary, and was a member of the Manasquan Fire Department.
Mr. Cooke is survived by his longtime friend, Jean Middlebrook, of Brick.
Interment was held in Greenwood Cemetery, West Long Branch.

John Russell
Neptune resident John P. Russell, formerly of Wall died on Friday, March 28, at the Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune.
He was 73 years old.
Mr. Russell was a self employed attorney before retiring in 1990. He was a former public defender in Hudson County for many years. Mr. Russell served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1958-1960.
He was a graduate of St. Aloysius High School, St. Peters College both in Jersey City and received his law degree from Seton Hall Law School. He was a member of Spring Lake Golf and Country Club. Mr. Russell was born in N.Y., NY, grew up in Jersey City and lived in Wall Township for 40 years before moving to Neptune four years ago.
He was predeceased by his parents, Gerard and Elizabeth Russell, his brother, George Russell, and by his son-in-law, Tony Prins.
Surviving are his sons, Sean W., of Ocean Township, and Cary V. Sr. and his wife, Debra, of Bethel, Conn.; daughters, Sandra Russell, of Asbury Park, Tracey Russell, of Neptune City and Charlotte Russell, of Spring Lake Heights; brother, James Russell, of Dumont; and sister, Kathleen Walsh, of Wayne. He also leaves three grandchildren, Anthony Prins, Cary Russell Jr. and Thomas Russell, along with many nieces and nephews.
Interment was private.

Edith Brann
Tinton Falls resident Edith Anderson Brann, a longtime summer resident of Manasquan, passed away peacefully on March 19 at her home after an extended illness.
He was 85 years old.
She was born in Glen Ridge and was a resident of New Jersey most of her life. She resided in Charlottesville, Va. and Chatham, Mass. from 1989 to 2004, until she returned to live at Seabrook Village in Tinton Falls.
Mrs. Brann was a summa cum laude graduate of Montclair State University with a degree in cultural anthropology. She was a charter member of the Ramapo Valley Sweet Adeline’s and enjoyed long time memberships in the Pines Lake Garden Club, Charlottesville Horticultural Club, Opera Guild and Jazz Society. She was an avid bridge player, knitter and piano player. She served as a volunteer for the American Red Cross Disaster Team, traveling to the disaster site and assisting victims of Hurricane Andrew in Florida, the Northridge earthquake in California, as well as serving in South Dakota and elsewhere.
Her love of diverse cultures inspired her interest in extensive travel throughout Europe, particularly England, where her parents were from, much of Latin America, Asia and parts of the Middle East, as well as nearly all of America and Canada. One of her greatest pleasures was accumulating and enjoying the many recipes she gathered in her travels. Well into her 84th year, she was still an avid and varied reader.
She was predeceased by her husband, Theodore Bromley Brann Jr.
She is survived by her two daughters, Althea and her husband, John Ridley, of Bernardsville, and Sally and her husband, E. Brock Strickler, of Charlottesville, Va.; eight grandchildren, Elizabeth Leckemby, Jennifer Staikos, John Jr., David, William and Christopher Ridley, and Lacy and Allison Strickler; a great-grandchild, Trey Leckemby; and a nephew, Martyn Smith.
Interment was private.

Marie Zukowski
Wall resident Marie Doolan Zukowski passed away Tuesday, March 25 at Jersey Shore Medical Center, Neptune.
She was 77 years old.
Born and raised in Bayonne, she had moved to the Shore area 55 years ago. Marie had graduated from Holy Family Academy, Bayonne in 1947. She had worked at Doolan’s Restaurant, Spring Lake Heights, and at Macy’s at Monmouth Mall. She always loved sunny days at the beach.
Marie was predeceased by a son, Edward “Zeke” Zukowski, in April 1981.
Surviving is a son and daughter-in-law, Stephen and Lisa Zukowski, of Trenton, S.C.; a grandson, Stephen Zukowski Jr., of Trenton, S.C.; a brother and sister-in-law, Michael and Joan Doolan, of Spring Lake; a sister, Anne M. Wall, of Bayonne; and several nieces and nephews, Susan Doolan, of Spring Lake, Ann Carter, of Las Vegas, Nev., Joanie Doolan, of Spring Lake, Robert Wall, of Mountain Lakes, Thomas Wall, of Riverdale, Joanne Oshust, of West Orange, and Ellenmarie Wall, of Bayonne.
Burial
was held in St. Catharine’s Cemetery, Wall.

Shirley A. Cox
Wall Township resident Shirley A. Cox died on Saturday, March 29 at the Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune.
She was 69 years old.
Born in Neptune, Mrs. Cox was raised in Belmar, during the early 1950s. Mrs. Cox assisted her father over a three day period with the assembly at their home, of the first television set in Belmar. A member of the Manasquan High School Graduating Class of 1956, Mrs. Cox moved to Wall Township in 1960, remaining a life long resident of the Shore area. A Certified Nursing Assistant, she was employed at the Sunnyside Nursing Home in Wall for five years.
One of the first “Soccer Moms” in the 1960s, Mrs. Cox was a fixture at her son’s games; her enthusiasm for the game could be heard as she offered her support and advice to the team. An avid gardner who grew, cooked and canned many of her own vegetables, she also enjoyed working in her flower garden taking great pride in the many flowers that bloomed under her care. When not in her garden or with her family, Mrs. Cox was a true NASCAR racing fan who closely followed the televised races with her cat Lilly by her side.
Mrs. Cox was predeceased by her parents, Marvin Polhemus and Mary Marlatt Polhemus, and her sister, Mary Campbell.
She is survived by her beloved husband of 51 years, John M. Cox; her four loving sons, Michael Cox, of Jacksonville, Fla., John Cox and his wife, Pamela, of Brick, Ronald Cox and his wife, Nancy, of Brick, and Thomas Cox and his wife, Cathi, of Belmar; her brother, Harry Polhemus, of Manahawkin; and her six very special grandchildren and one great-grandchild, in addition to her three nieces and one nephew.
Interment was held at Atlantic View cemetery Forest Avenue, Manasquan.
In lieu of flowers donations in memory of Mrs. Cox can be made to the Hospice Program at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, PO Box 1064, Neptune, 07754. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
The family wishes to extend their thanks for the excellent and loving care Mrs. Cox received from the nursing staff and nursing assistants on the Booker Two Women’s Health Unit at Jersey Shore Medical Center.

Kathryne Badecker
Brick resident Kathryne Therese Badecker died of a stroke on March 22 in Baltimore, Md. She leaves behind many loved ones, including family in Manasquan.
She was 80 years old.
Born in New York City, she spent her childhood in Teaneck. Kathryn and William Badecker were married
in 1948 and moved to Monmouth County in 1957, residing in Hazlet, Rumson, Locust and finally in Brick. She also resided in New Smyrna, Fla., until her husband’s death.
She was a homemaker and an avid gardener. Before her retirement, she volunteered for the Meals on Wheels program in Red Bank and served as treasurer for that chapter of the organization. After her retirement, she volunteered on a personal basis for many of her senior friends and neighbors.
Mrs. Badecker was predeceased by her parents, John and Helen Ramsay; her husband, William J. Badecker Jr.; her brother and his wife, Robert and Rose Ramsay; and her sister-in-law, Leona Ramsay.
She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Drs. William Badecker and Kathleen Straub, of Baltimore, Charles Badecker, of Brick, and James and Colleen Badecker, of Manasquan; her brothers and their spouses, John and Jane Ramsay, Richard and Virginia Ramsay, William and Linda Ramsay, Larry and Kathy Ramsay, and Gerard and Regina Ramsay; her grandchildren, Alex, Tori and Kate Badecker; her in-laws, George and Marie Benas, Therese Hollenstein, Joseph and Eileen Kovatch, and Pat Ramsay; her 37 nieces and nephews; and many, many dear friends.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Neary-Quinn Funeral Home, 39 South St., Manasquan. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Manasquan. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in her memory to the Brain Rescue Unit of Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, MD 21287.
John Connolly
Manasquan resident John G. “Jack” Connolly passed away Tuesday, March 25 at Medical Center of Ocean County, Brick Hospital.
He was 67 years old.
Jack had been employed at A.T. & T., Clark as a Quality Control Inspector before retiring 10 years ago. Prior to this he had worked at Western Electric, Kearny for many years. He had also been a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. Born and raised in Jersey City, he had lived there his entire life before moving to Manasquan in 1972.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Kathryn Connolly, in 1983
He is survived by his wife Lynda Crispinelli Connolly, of 16 years; his four daughters, Kathryn Smith, Maureen Martone, Patricia Shevlino and Carolyn Jones; a stepdaughter, Heather Sprague and a stepson, Brent Correll; a brother and his wife, Robert and Lynn Connolly, of Manasquan; 12 grandchildren and two nieces.
Relatives and friends are invited to call on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the O’Brien Funeral Home, Highway 35 at New Bedford Road, Wall, followed by a funeral service on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. Private cremation will be at the convenience of the family.

Eleanor L. Soriano
Manasquan resident Eleanor L. Soriano died Thursday, March 20 at Ocean Medical Center, Brick.
She was 78 years old.
Born in Somerville, she lived in Raritan Borough most of her life, before moving to Manasquan in 1981.
Mrs. Soriano was a telephone operator for NJ Bell for 10 years. She later owned and operated the Korner Inn in Raritan with her husband until 1980 when she retired and moved to Manasquan. While living in Manasquan, she worked as a cashier at the Foodtown in Sea Girt for 11 years, retiring eight years ago.
She was a member of St. Denis Church in Manasquan, loved playing bingo and her many trips to Atlantic City. She enjoyed watching the Yankees and spending time with her grandchildren.
Mrs. Soriano was predeceased by her husband, Edward, in 1980.
She is survived by three sons, Edward of Manasquan, Wayne and his wife, Kirsten, of Jackson, and Joseph and his wife, Arlene, of Piscataway; a daughter, Mary Ann, of Manasquan; a sister, Margaret Sabol, of Somerville; and two grandsons, Luke and Asher. Also surviving is her niece Madelyn, and several other nieces and nephews.
Interment was held in St. Bernard cemetery in Bridgewater.
